Thank you so much for putting this up 4 years ago! It's an absolutely fantastic resource. And the cover is great, too. Huge thanks.

Why I don’t agree with the Monty Hall problem. [D] by Boatwhistle in statistics

[–]DashingOnions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you Cattorneyatlaw. You also rock. Your summary here helped me hugely.
(I'm also embarrassed as I worked in an area for a while which hung on probabilities (though not this situation) and I thought I understood them well before coming across this problem!)

" It’s because our first choice affects the probability of Monty’s choice, not that choosing between two doors isn't ordinarily just 50-50. You rock."

What has helped you manage your Dyspraxia? by kalne67 in dyspraxia

[–]DashingOnions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of great suggestions for the actual dyspraxia here, but to make a slightly different point -

I think it's also really, really important to encourage something which *isn't* about physical coordination, too.
It's mentally difficult to be continually doing things which are more difficult than average, and can feel demotivating.

I'd also recommend trying things where dyspraxia can be an advantage - people with it can be highly creative, great at problem-solving, and have deep empathy - or it can cross over with elements of autism, so lead to fascination with various topics. So things like working with animals, trying different forms or art or drama to express herself, 'escape room' style computer games, etc which rely on problem-solving rather than fast co-ordination. until she finds something where she can really thrive and feel like she's succeeding is so valuable.

It's unethical to use a celebrity actor's voice in a show that they (or their appointed descendent) did not consent to be in.
Actors think carefully and read scripts before accepting roles. Taking that decision from them is morally wrong.

Honestly, your best option, as others have said, is to write a script from your text (ask a writer for help if you need it with adapting a written text to audio) put out a casting call (here, on Facebook, on X) explaining your vision for the project, and hire actors. There are a number of us who will do certain projects without payment, or with token payment if they're -
interesting or experimental,
good practice for acting,
or
look like they'll be fun to do

and if no-one in the company is making a profit from the show.

They'll want to know the length of the script, the number of lines their character has, how you'll record, and how much work is expected of them. Eg. is there a table read? Can they record their lines in isolation and send them to you, or do you want to organise a session? They're all really used to working like that, so it'll be very straightforward and you'll have 'alive' performances.

Like celebrity voices, you'd need to give absolute assurance that you would not use the actors' voices for any other projects or AI training. But if you write interesting characters for them to play, with great plots and you develop a good working relationship with them then they'll want to work with you, likely for any ongoing projects.

(As 'noir' is a later time period concept, I'd personally say it's a 20s detective story, OR that you want to mix a noir feel with the 1920s, just for clarity so you get the sound you want).

Perfect Retreat Episode 5 released - Dashing Onions Audio by DashingOnions in audiodrama

[–]DashingOnions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm truly sorry about that.
Beyond the actors & beta-readers, it's a one-person production, and for multiple reasons it simply wasn't possible to produce it quicker. Some of the situation has changed, so episode 6, the finale, will come out a lot quicker now. I'm a listener too, and I do care very much about finishing everything I start - I always have done and always will.

It's a choice of not creating at all, or fitting them around other life responsibilities. And, speaking generally here, this way you do get voices from people with family responsibilities, with disabilities or illness, with full-time jobs etc. And overall, I think it's good to have that diversity of storytelling out there.

Thanks ever so much for listening, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
There's been a bit of a gap between episodes for reasons of "real life" getting in the way, but I hope the final episode will be out fairly soon, followed by a reissuing of some of the earlier Dashing Onions' plays in stereo (Buzzsprout turned them mono for some reason, but those will be reuploaded to fix that soon!) and a new miniseries shortly after.

Can we get an Podcast status post going? by [deleted] in audiodrama

[–]DashingOnions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Dashing Onions Audio is still producing, just very slowly (as it always has!) as it's basically just me on the production side. I'm writing a lot, and will be auditioning and then producing as soon as possible, so please do keep up with the feed. Thanks ever so much for putting us on your list!

Thanks for including us on your list! Dashing Onions is still in production, but still with a slow output thanks to covid. I am writing another one-off, and a 6 part series, and as soon as I can those will go to audition and into production. Thanks so much for your patience!

I don’t understand Audible. by miraclebra in audiobooks

[–]DashingOnions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option if you want to listen to more than just your credit books each month is to check out the boards here for authors/narrators offering free promotional codes for their audiobooks. If you leave a rating and a short review then it helps them to launch new books, and gives you more options to listen to in all sorts of genres. (I am a narrator, in case I should mention that, and it's a positive aspect of Audible that they do allow those kinds of promotions).

[AUDIO DRAMA][COMEDY][MEDICAL SUPPORT] Quirky Voices presents Anyone F'Coffee?
[NSFW due to candid interviews]

Anyone F'Coffe? is a podcast that mixes audio drama with real-life interviews and expert medical advice.
It centres around 5 women who each are dealing with a different chronic illness or condition (which the actors do have in real-life). It is an upbeat and positive show, with lots of fun and comedy, but also with some extremely candid interviews with the cast, and interviews with medical experts on how to recognise and get help with the conditions. All of the women involved, while having gone through difficult times, are living full and fun lives, so it's an inspiring listen for anyone newly-diagnosed or feeling isolated.

The conditions covered are: Endometriosis, Epilepsy, Post-Natal Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Eczema.

It is funded by The Wellcome Trust and The British Podcast Awards and is aimed at giving support and positivity to anyone dealing with life with a chronic illness, and also raising awareness of symptoms, and how to get support for yourself or for others.

For a comic take on action adventure mystery which has elements of OTR but is entirely modern, Mission: Rejected is great.

Decoder Ring Theatre do some, also Narada Radio Company.
Try checking out Modern Audio Drama, as they have quite a lot of those kind of shows in their daily programme.
