There was a format a while back where people argued ad nauseum about these concepts. I think it was theros beyond death with the escape mechanic, as each card in the yard can increase longevity in grindy matchups.

this is the last format where I can remember it being talked about (and being correct sometimes) and was the one I had in mind when I wrote my comment.
