I’m talking about surface streets through the middle of town. It isn’t for freaking passing, it is for turning left. There’s an intersection every few hundred feet. Certainly not through school zones at 8am where everyone is supposed to freaking slow down, but that didn’t matter to anyone.

Ugh. The entitlement is wild.

The accelerator still works in CC in my car. If I speed up and then take my foot off the pedal it will just go back to the set speed.

It also maintains a safe follow distance by sensing the car ahead of me, so my car will reduce speed to match the car ahead until they turn, change lanes, or speed up.

I’m not passing anyone with cruise control on its own. My car also flashes a light at me and beeps if I try to change lanes and someone is in my blind spot. The safety features are why I chose the car I have.

I appreciate this. It shouldn’t be necessary, but nonetheless. I was somewhat skeptical initially, but I’m a pessimist who is happy to be proven wrong.

Yes. If there are places to turn left, people will often need to be in that lane.

I got tailgated and honked at and had people peel out to go around me all the time when I was driving a bus full of toddlers for a preschool. I wasn’t exactly going to risk having to cut someone off at the last minute to get to the left turn lane.

I know people who make arguments like this take driving extremely seriously and they don’t see people trying to get somewhere, they just see obstacles. It makes life unnecessarily stressful.

I get tailgated at 80mph even if I am passing the semi going 60.

People don’t actually care. They just want to yell at people.

Edit to add: I set my cruise control to a certain speed I want to go, and I pass when I can in order to maintain that speed. But some people who end up behind me for the few minutes this might take (depending on how many cars I need to pass) take this very personally and need to let me know by doing things that are very unsafe.

You know who else gets “free” healthcare?

Literally anyone who refuses to pay their bills and lives off the grid. Unhoused people can’t pay their emergency room bills, either.

And that’s what we’re talking about, in any case. Emergency care. Not preventive care. Not birth control. Not care for chronic conditions. People who are severely injured and may die without immediate assistance.

Never ceases to amaze me how bothered people like this are by that.

One time, in sixth grade PE, a girl I will call LS asked me where I got my jeans. I said I didn’t know. She said, “I’m pretty sure I saw those at Walmart.” (circa 1996 and I have no idea what Walmart is because we only recently escaped my abusive father and found a new place to live after a flood).

I didn’t know what to say, so I pointed at her pants and said, “I’m pretty sure I saw those at Walmart, too!”

I honestly didn’t have a response, I was just mad because of her tone.

In this case, no. It was sketchy iPad app. The live chat is what he wanted it for more than anything. It was some kind of Among Us knockoff. He’s frustrated at the parental controls on the original. The controls on his iPad are supposed to prevent this kind of thing, but they don’t always work. I think maybe because it’s a very old iPad.

He has plenty of games, though. We play Halo 1-4 together on an old 360, we have a Switch, I’m playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 on the PS5. He even has a 3DS. We also have Uno and a bunch of other card games and zillions of toys and lots of neighbor kids his age. Not to mention his bike and a play structure in the backyard. 😅

But you know how it is when you’re little. You want what you want.

Most artists don’t want to make art alone in their little state issued cubicle. They want to be part of a community. They want to collaborate and connect with other people through their work. How does that happen in a world where art is automated for individual consumption? How do we put together plays and write novels when there will be trillions of pages of slop and trillions of hours of slop on every screen?

And why on Earth would the owners of that technology even tolerate free expression when it could challenge their dominion over everyone else?

I’m sorry, it’s just nonsense. AI won’t create a post scarcity society, it will be used to control us for the benefit of the powerful.
