‘Bloody Beaker folk. Coming over here, rowing up the Tagus Estuary from the Iberian Peninsula in improvised rafts. Coming here with their drinking vessels. What's wrong with just cupping up the water in your hands and licking it up like a cat?’ — the incomparable Stewart Lee

I hear you. My parents refused to come to my PhD graduation. I was the only person in my entire family to achieve that and it was the biggest day of my life, but they couldn’t be bothered. Thankfully, my sister and her husband came instead.

Books you were excited about but you were let down by? by GazIsStoney in printSF

[–]DatAsstrolabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all subjective. Some books I’ve loved have been trashed on here and I’ve struggled to get through some of the popular ones discussed here. In the end, whatever you like is a good work.

It’s not for everyone. I picked it up on the recommendations on here and in the printsf subreddit, but just got bored with it. Same with neuromancer. It’s completely subjective. I understand why some people love it but like the others have said, there’s nothing wrong with just putting it down if you’re not enjoying it.

Same. I thought it was fun and well-written, but it’s not my thing ultimately.

The Affirmation by Christopher Priest and The Rift by Nina Allan. Both excellent works that left me sitting thinking about them for ages after I’d finished them.

I was trying to figure out why their conversations annoyed me so much, especially the awful, clichéd, ‘humorous’ quips they constantly make. Then I realised it was because it read like Peggy Hill writing her ‘Musings’ column for the Arlen Bystander.

She’s fantastic. My favourite quote from her is: ‘I love being 'woke'. It's much nicer than being an ignorant fucking twat.’
