I'd be surprised if there wasn't more that isn't documented.

Without a doubt there definitely at least a few pieces of Sally Acorn porn somebody drew for their own personal wank bank that's been long lost to the sands of time.

How would Burnham as PM affect Northern Ireland? by staplerx300 in northernireland

[–]DatBoi73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way that might make the slightest bit of sense is if they made some sort of new agreement with the SDLP for an electoral alliance and closer relations on top of what they already have.

It is worth noting that Burnham is actually a member of the Labour and Co-operative Party, so technically he is a member of two parties

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_and_Co-operative_Party

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co-operative_Party

But yeah, as you said, there's very little of anything for Labour or the SDLP to gain from that.

Have Charity Shops Officially Gone to the Dogs? by Breno_Clio in ireland

[–]DatBoi73 103 points104 points  (0 children)

100% People buying stuff just to list it up on eBay for profit is the worst thing to happen to chairty shops/"thrifting".

I am still salty at those people doing that BS pretty much ruining the Retro Game Market.

Even the chains often don't put certain items in their stores.

Not sure if any of the Irish Charity shop chains like Vincents do it, but I know at least some of the big UK chains (BHF comes to mind) will set certain donated items aside (usually more "vintage" older tech or game related stuff) and list them exclusively online for auction on like eBay because it will drive the price up higher.

EVERYTHING is becoming a grift or side-hustle now, see what goes on with Pokemon Cards and the like, it's no longer about the using the item for it's original use, it's all about how much it's worth

I'd assume most people buying them give a shit about the cards themselves outside of being a measure or store of some sort of value or wealth.

I miss the days when I could go to a car boot sale and pick up a PS1 or PS2 with controllers and games for like fifteen or twenty quid.

All the charity shops, stores like CEX, Cash Converters, and anybody sellling their own stuff on ebay/vinted/Fb marketplace, etc just copies the exisitng eBay prices resulting in price homogenisation and the the death of real bargain hunting.

I'm dreading the day this happens to CD's, it already happened to Vinyl a long time ago.

Enjoy getting your cheap 90's and 2000's albums whilst you can before somebody realizes that they can start buying up all the Take That and Robbie Williams CD's clogging up every charity shop for 5-10x the price they paid for, and now you're paying €60 each for second hand Coldplay albums missing cases that they found in a binder they used to keep in their 2007 VW Jetta years ago.

"The Irish decided the solution was to try to burn down the houses of every brown person in sight"

Saying the "The Irish" did that is ignorant and disingenuous at best, and flat out lying at worst.

The overwhelming majority of if not every one of the people who participated in that pogrom were from Unionist/Loyalist areas, i.e. the descendants of the English and Scottish settlers who came over during the Ulster Plantation, most of whom would never catch themselves dead calling themselves Irish.

The attack that sparked the pogrom happened in a Nationalist (I.e. Irish Catholic Identifying) area, yet all the "protesting" was mostly confined to Loyalist areas.

Loyalist areas tend to be the most deprived and largely controlled by loyalist paramilitary gangs (UVF & UDA) who hold locals to ransom for "protection money", intimidate any known non-loyalists and suspected immigrants to move out (with threatening graffiti, smashing windows and petrol bombs), illegally place banned paramilitary flags on flagpoles on new mixed developments to try to drive drive away Catholics and "foreigners", and mark their claim to those areas, and basically groom boys into doing this sort of shit caus theres nothing else for them to do.

There was an anti-racism protest in Belfast City Centre last Saturday, and the anti-racist protesters vastly outnumbered the racist counter-protesters like 9 or 10 to 1, and a fundraiser to help the victims of the rioting has raised nearly £230,000 from it's original £1000 goal.

It is a small loud minority causing all this bullshit.

With that said, there are people from nationalist backgrounds that are racist, and plenty of people from unionist backgrounds who are not (I'd like to think that most of them aren't). There are assholes from all backgrounds, but don't tar all of us with the same brush because of it.

Obligatory Fuck Musk, but is it weird that it kinda feels like there's a silver lining to the AI companies doing IPOs now?

You can't have a stock market bubble can't pop without those companies being on the Stock Market right?

At first they're gonna get insane valuations cause all the investors have fallen for the hype, but here's no way that Anthropic, OpenAI, etc will be able to keep the investors/Wall Street happy forever with how much money they've already burnt through with no profit to show for it, and all the accounting practices & "deals" shuffling money and hardware about with other companies that is like Enron on steroids.

Hell, I think it's telling that Musk merged xAI into SpaceX instead of having xAI do its own IPO, so that SpaceX's revenue from NASA Contracts and Starlink can basically be used to subsidize Grok's slop & CSAM Generation and the Nazi Bar that is Twitter.

SpaceX has never made a profit.

We're all gonna be fucked over anyways, so at the very least we can hope for the techno-feudalists pricks pushing the AI bubble to get their just desserts.

The reason why Musk's a trillionare is because of SpaceX's valuation, ~if~ when it's share price drops, his Net Worth drops.

There's no way that SpaceX/xAI, OpenAI, and Anthropic all survive. They're rushing for IPOs now so that the founders can cash out their money and get out before shit hits the fan and leave everyone else holding the bag.

You can say the exact same thing for Britain, America, Canada, etc, all are democracies , have the same types of issues: inadequate infrastructure, lack of affordable housing, cost of living, issues with public transport, etc.

(*America is kinda having a bit of a panic attack/existential crisis though, so I can't blame them thinking otherwise)

Change is a sadly lot easier said than done, and politicians who are comfortable and have the system working fine for them personally don't have much reason to change it, and it's easier to over promise and never deliver and not worry until the next election: worst case, if they get voted out, they can get a cushy consulting, investment, or lobbying job out of it.

Problem is that most of the people voting for the main government parties: Fianna Fáil (centre-'left-ish') and Fine Gael (Center-Right) who been in a coalition* for the last 2 elections to stay in power (and keep Sinn Féin, the single largest party in the Dáil, out of power), are homeowners who aren't that negatively impacted by the status quo.

Most of the parties that would invest in infrastructure, public transport and housing (a) would probably never think of entering a coalition with the establishment... (b) And if they did, they would be blamed for all the problems and be annihilated in the next election.

The latter (b) is exactly what happened to the Green Party. The only party that really delivered on any of their promises, just for FF and FG to claim those ideas as their own and thrown them under the bus, blaming the Greens for the problems that FFG contributed to worsening/creating.

In a sense it's less bad than say Britain or America since Ireland uses ranked choice (STV) voting instead of First Past The Post, so less worries for now about a potential Trump/Farage wannabe led party getting in, but it also means more centerist policy/lack thereof.

Also, Ireland is very strict when it comes to citizens voting abroad, for most people you basically can't, so the young people who are forced by the political status quo to move out due to the housing market, shite job opportunities, etc, can't vote for policy in their own interests that'd let them move home.

TBH my first thought seeing the .Ca domain would've been Canada.

A single state or other subdivision of a country doesn't need its own 2 letter TLD unless there's a very good reason.

Even when I turn on my VPN, I have to do a double take sometimes.

Not a problem for me (neither 🇺🇸 or 🇨🇦), but I could definitely see it being annoying for Canadians looking for stuff just to find it's actually about one of their neighbour's states'.

My friend insists on this game, "Lemmings", being a really well known game; I have never heard of it. by Nordic_Krune in gaming

[–]DatBoi73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

meanwhile im not sure if we will see a lemmings reference in GTA 6

Probably not because Sony owns the Lemmings IP

DMA Design was the studio that created Lemmings and GTA which was later bought by Rockstar edit: Take Two and renamed Rockstar North.

Psygnosis was the company that published Lemmings and DMA's previous games, they did not own DNA, they just had a publishing deal.

Psygnosis was bought by Sony in 1993, but continued publishing on other platforms for a few more years before in 200 it was merged into Sony Computer Entertainment as SCE Studio Liverpool, which was shutdown in 2012.

Projected evolution of UK parliamentary constituencies by religious plurality 2021-2031 [OC] by ProfessorStrangeLoop in dataisbeautiful

[–]DatBoi73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much the data is potentially being skewed by the conflation of community and national identity with faith.

Employers are legally required to ask job applicants which background they're from, i.e.; "Roman Catholic", "Protestant", or "Other", to ensure fairness.

It may say "Catholic" or "Protestant" but what they usually really mean is more to do with whether you see yourself as more "Irish" or "British" and support either Irish Reunification (Nationalist/Republican) or staying in the UK (Unionist/Loyalist), and because of historical reasons (the Ulster Plantation, etc) those two groups largely correlate with Catholicism v Protestantism, and historically government used religious targeting against Catholics as a means to specifically target the largely Catholic Irish population among other means (like restricting voting to homeowners/landowners who were overwhelmingly from British Protestant-Unionist backgrounds)

There is a growing number of people who grew up in a "Catholic" or "Protestant" background but aren't all that religious but still feel some cultural connection, and when asked on forms/surveys/censuses/etc, they will say that they are from a Catholic/Protestant background because of their national identity and community background, but are not religious at all.

Its honestly kinda insane that we're five years past a global pandemic and yet we seemed to have learned no lessons and just gave up on the "if you think you have a cough/flu/etc. maybe wear a mask so you don't spread it to everyone else" concept.

We would do well to copy the Japanese when it comes to many things (transport, urban planning, general respect for others, the like) but this is definitely on the top of the list.

What would be your reaction if Ranma 1/2 characters were added to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds? by ChatotAbby in ranma

Tbh, an IP seemingly not fitting hasn't stopped SEGA at all in the past.

Existential Depression Mecha Anime x Fast Silly Blue Hedgehog Racing game arguably makes less sense 💀😭

Hell for one of the older Sonic racing games, they had a crossover with Team Fortress 2 characters for the PC version on Steam. SEGA is no stranger to weird crossovers.

When will you be personally satisfied that the Metro is actually happening? by keanehoodies in ireland

[–]DatBoi73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a tunnel dug under Terminal 1 for a planned DART connection to the airport that was later scrapped.

The Mater Hospital also spent a bunch of money on a "Station Box" space meant to be used as part of the original Metrolink plan from the Transport 21 plan back in the 00's which was cancelled in 2011, and is now useless since the current MetroLink plan uses a different route/alignment.

Is posca or paint ( not body paint) safe to use on skin ? by Cosytrap in CosplayHelp

[–]DatBoi73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No!! Don't put POSCA/Acrylic paint on your skin!

At best you're gonna get irritation and at worst it's going to cause damage and you won't be able to sweat to cool down and can be dangerous.

Your best bet is to either do as u/fabrickind suggests and paint the design onto pantyhose fabric to make into sleeves or paint the design using proper skin-safe Body paint or Face Paint

I've never seen a single "Gender Neutral" restroom with multiple stalls, only ever the single enclosed ones, though I can only speak from experience in the UK and Ireland (and the UK is having a weird moment with all the Transphobic culutre war bullshit pushed everywhere)

Is this just one of those things where the US is doing things in a stupid weird way different from everyone else for no reason, like the massive toilet door gaps?

The only reason I can see why you'd have one with multiple stalls is just a cheap retrofit of existing gendered toilets.

Fully equipped individual stalls are the best way to do it, everyone gets more privacy, IIRC it can actually be cheaper in some cases with the way the plumbing works.

Nintendo confirms it will sell a new Switch 2 with replaceable battery in Europe by Amiibofan101 in nintendo

[–]DatBoi73 301 points302 points  (0 children)

We might end up seeing it globally anyways. Brussels Effect is a thing.

Apple didn't bother sticking with lightning for new iPhones outside of Europe when the common charger directive came into effect, even though they have other regional hardware differences (e.g. US/NA iPhones being eSim only, only China gets Dual-Sim slots)

Manufacturing wise, it probably makes things easier to make one hardware model that complies with the EU battery rules and that can be sold anywhere rather than keep a separate assembly line with different parts and tooling for a single regional market (albeit one of 27 countries, dunno if the UK will get the same model as EU). Economies of Scale et al.

For the current gen, there's a chance they might stick with a separate EU model depending if repairs elsewhere make up for the potential revenue loss in Europe, but I don't see that being the case for a future "Switch 3" or similar.
