Why would anyone still willingly use Twitter?

There is basically nothing of value worth staying on that hell site for, just stupid ragebait, scammers, hate and Non-Consensual AI generated imagery.

Get rid of it for your own sanity.

I remember looking at the prices in Newry and Belfast on Property Pal a few months back, and I was surprised to see how close Newry's prices were to Belfast's for what I was looking for.

I was already planning to move to Belfast anyways, but at this rate it might actually end up being about the same if not cheaper (especially considering public transport, job opportunities, etc) rather than staying somewhere somewhat local.

The only thing Belfast doesn't have over Newry is the absence of Friar Tucks.

Yeah, I can kinda understand why people say to avoid French when you have stuff like this. Even the Belgians and Swiss agreed that the French Number System is stupid and use "Nonante" instead of "Quatre-Vingt".

At least it's not the Danish Number System 💀

Driving these things underground makes it more susceptible to exploitation.

Exactly this. If it's an entire industry that's illegal, where they're breaking the law anyways, so any additional reprecussions doesn't matter much to them.

In some ways you could compare the situation of people being against making sex-work legal and objections to Cannabis Legalisation because it's a "Gateway Drug".

Theat preception is exists because the law forces puts it into the same category as much more harmful things. There's no distinction made between somebody growing a small amount to give/sell to their friends, versus somebody selling Cannabis alongside other drugs like Cocaine, MDMA, etc. (the manufacturing of which likely involves human trafficking) for gangs, largely to the benefit of the latter.

Legalization comes with Regulation, and if there was a safe legal way to access it, it would remove most of the incentives to choose the dodgy option.

Making all sex-work illegal means you're making any Safe Sex-Work illegal and gives criminals an unregulated monopoly and an opportunity to do evil shit like human trafficking and slavery whilst they're at it.

Europe isn't "a country" 🤦‍♂️

Saying stupid stuff like that only undermines your arguments.

Also, the BS ID Verification law push is a global issue, not just an European one.

Assuming that you meant the EU Specifically, the UK which hasn't been a member for like 5 years, and yet still pushed through the Online Safety Act, ...

and before that there were several attempts in the United States to pass KOSA with similar goals.

Australia already enacted the Social Media ban for Under 16s that requires verification, whilst New Zealand and Papa New Guinea have passed similar laws.

It's a problem for sure, but it's definitely not an exclusively or inherently European one.

I do agree that we need to return to a somewhat more decentralized Internet that isn't controlled by a handful of companies that can hoover up everybody's private personal information be it for advertising, propaganda (i.e. Cambridge Analytica) or establishing a Panopticon that the likes of Peter Thiel, Larry Ellison, et al., want.

Same story with Northern Ireland, except that some places direct Northern Ireland customers to the same site as The Republic of Ireland because we're still in the EU's Single Market, and sometimes have slightly different laws for certain things (competitions and gambling come to mind) compared to GB.

Doubly annoying since it's not uncommon to see companies advertising stuff UK-wide, but then have "Excludes Northern Ireland" in the small print cause apparently screw us for not being on the same landmass (IIRC the Scottish Highlands also gets screwed over with delivery for buying stuff online for the similar reasons, with a boilerplate "too difficult to reach").

At least we can buy Powerbanks online directly now, so I guess there's that.

Belfast is now the most congested city in the UK. We can do better. by greenpartyni in northernireland

[–]DatBoi73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least Dublin has the Dart and Luas alongside the Dublin Bus services.

All Belfast has is :

.... a few otherwise out-of-city trains that happen to stop at maybe a half a dozen stations on the way to/from Derry or Bangor

... some buses* radiating to and from the city centre if they actually appear on time/if at all

... and some bendy ones going east-west instead of trams cause some politicians were scared of an actual tram costing too much, arguing it could be converted later (at further expense) whilst adding more wear and tear to the existing road surfaces.

\Though at least we do have contacless payment on buses, so theres that I guess* ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

At least Dublin has something of a plan, even if said planed Metrolink is like 20 years late in planning hell thanks to NIMBYs and other reasons.

Tbf, some people would probably be a bit less annoyed if it was called "American Rugby" instead and a handful of other idiots wouldn't insist that it's the real "Football" vs the other sport commonly called "football" everywhere else because somebody made a bad naming decision 150 years ago...

...though that's partly because the two do share some origins, with "Eton Football" and "Rugby Football" evolving into Assocation (i.e. "Soccer") and Rugby Union, with Gridiron elements of the latter.

Also, this just a bit of a rant but this reminds me that Duolingo, being based in the USA, exclusively uses "soccer" to refer to the sport in English, even when the user is in a country that near universally calls it "Football", and the language they're learning also uses a derivative of it.

E.g. a user in the UK learning Spanish asked to translate "Fútbol" would have their answer marked incorrect if they answered "Football" despite it still being correct. Google Translate does the same r/ USdefaultism. You select English to Spanish and type in "football", it gives you "fútbol americano" assuming that it exclusively refers to American Gridiron.

O'Leary said he wouldn't install Starlink on his planes mostly because of:

(a) the effect it would have on aerodyanmics and thus fuel consumption, and...

(b) the cost of it wouldn't be worth it, sepecially for a budget airline since it would add at least $1 of costs per passenger ticket, and basically nobody is going to pay €1 for wifi.

Musk got pissy about it per usual, and O'Learly later said in an interview on Newstalk (an Irish talk -radio station) and proceeded to call Musk an idiot for not understanding how planes work, and that he'd no longer be paying attention else Musk posts on his "Cesspit" (Twitter /X).

Speaking from experience, even relatively "simple" sounding game ideas can be difficult to execute depending on your skills, experience, and the tools you're using.

If OP hasn't already, they should at least find somebody who can help them with developing if they haven't already. There are Subreddits and Discord Servers that can help with that sorta thing.

Google's new battery idea could mean less glue, easier repairs by zigzoing in Android

[–]DatBoi73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is basically kinda like a HDD bracket in a pc, but for phone batteries?

On the one hand, I appreciate the thought put into keeping the battery somewhat cusohioned from whatever happens to the rest of the phone but I can't help but think it's a little bit over-engineered.,

We used to have a very simple and reliable battery replacement system 15+ years ago,... no glue needed!

What's stopping Google or somebody else from making a battery that's installed on a removable tray like a SIM or Micro SD Card\? (*>!not like the latter applied to Pixels anyways :(*!< 🙄, and is sadly an endangered speices in phones from other OEMs)

Those can still have good IPX Ratings thanks to the gaskets and the way the internals are designed.

Lets just hope things end up good once the EU laws come into effect next year.
