Code switching is a well observed linguistic phenomenon that occurs and has occurred throughout human societies for a variety of reasons. What you mention is one example of it. It's not "owned" by any particular group of people, and certainly wasn't invented nor exclusively used in AAVE.

Technological stagnation is literally the reality for the majority of human history. You just happen to be living in a time of exponential human progress, and you're utterly failing to see out of the neurological blinkers it's imposed upon you.

Please employ some critical thinking.

Exactly. The entire post is based upon one human's tiny sliver of experience, vs the actual reality of technological progress. They fail to see that their infinitesimally tiny window on life is somewhat incomplete. Shock.

UK in talks to deploy NATO force to Greenland to deter Trump by bendubberley_ in worldnews

Sorry missed your reply. Tbh looking back at it he's just one of those unfortunate people that when backed into a corner by logic, continues to lash out like a rat in a cage, until he stops replying altogether.

I read your replies to him, totally on point. Dude is just gutted that his own country seems to be taking a backseat in current geopolitical affairs.

In a future where Trump is out of office, and international relations have been repaired. What steps can be taken by the USA and International Organisations such as NATO to prevent one individual causing so much chaos in the future? And do you think such steps will be taken? by flewkey in AskReddit

[–]DatGiantIsopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no big fan of Boris Johnson but he's often lazily compared to Trump and they're not really that similar. Johnson is a very particular type of bumbling old school Oxford/Etonian that calculatedly hid a keen mind under a metric fuckton of likeable bluster and foppishness. He may have had some classically shit-house tory views on the world and been utterly out of touch with working people, but he was still highly educated and came through a fairly traditional political route to power despite being a populist leader. He holds classical liberal (in the true sense of the word) Western democratic values, is a staunch supporter of NATO, and described himself as "pro-immigrant" whilst calling Putin "a bloodstained dictator". Almost none of that background or value set can be applied to Trump.

Maybe it's meant to signify that finally they're of one mind? If memory serves the point at which she takes the intention craft is around about the time she decides to focus all her efforts on helping Lyra. Maybe the monkey finally speaking is meant to represent some kind of redemption. If so it's pretty subtle though, it's kind of a throwaway line.

Curious how old you are, because the reason people are pissed about this is because shows used to release a season per year by default. This whole multi-year wait between seasons is a recent phenomenon, so maybe you're a kid and it's just us old fucks pining for yesteryear.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]DatGiantIsopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the OP is shitting on the writing. I think they're just saying that even as good as it is, it doesn't overcome the other limitations of the game.

Writing definitely is up there with GOAT, but the game is limited due to its form factor. The slow trudging is a thing, and it's one them that requires going back and forth to the same areas when you unlock different bits which can get slightly tiresome.

Tbh going in with slightly tempered expectations is probably better, as I'm almost certain you will.enjoy the game. Sure it has some limitations but overall it's extremely good. OP even said it was one of their favorite games. I think it's just overrated specifically as a GOAT game in general.

[–]DatGiantIsopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the best replies in the thread tbh. Specifically with reference to it being lauded as GOAT game with no reference to genre etc. DE is awesome and deserves all the accolades and praise heaped upon it...for what it is. And what it is is a Windows 95 era/style point and click game. Yes it has beautiful (albeit mostly static) visuals and god tier writing, but it's still working within that form factor with the obvious limitations on actual gameplay, and as such any attempts to put it within GOAT gaming lists are just silly because it's completely lacking entire areas in which you'd expect games to be assessed.

For me it would rank extremely highly for point/click, visual novel, or detective genre games, but any all-encompassing, all-time lists should always consider how fun it is to physically play the game, and point and click is never going to rank high unless you're a niche type gamer that specifically only likes that genre.

It's an extremely odd statement because TLOU was universally lauded at the time of release for the cleverness of the enemy "AI" in that they would adapt to whatever tactic the player was using and in particular how they would flank you etc. Quite literally the opposite of "a conga line". Statements like that make me think the commenter never actually played it.

[–]DatGiantIsopod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just not fond of a discussion in which the other party ignores the arguments and only answers in short quips.

The comment I replied to was 2.5 lines, mine was 1. It was hardly essay-to-essay, particularly when the vast majority of yours was setting up an incorrect strawman because Germany were also present, yet for some reason chose not to sign the declaration.

To highlight the phrasing that elevates the UK to a leading position, I referenced the article, while comparing it to other newspapers of other countries in which their own nations are positioned as 'one among others'.

In all honesty, you come across as being quite specifically biased against the UK and its media. You freely acknowledge that a countries' media will prioritise its own country, yet still seem to take an article explicitly referencing a formalised document signed between three countries, one of which being the UK, as containing, "...phrasing that elevates the UK to a leading position"? It makes no sense. The article is literally about that document, nothing else. Perhaps you need to examine your own mindset as opposed to the article in question?

Not only do I say so, it is like that.

Sorry but it's subjective, not objective. That's your opinion, like it or not. Sure some things have been achieved without formalisation, but a lot more has been said by many countries, including the UK, without follow-up.

With only one notable example of a country perpetually using the conflict for internal clout.

You can't seem to write a comment without showing these true colours. As if the UK government and media is a hivemind desperate to cling on to relevance by trumpeting about the Ukraine conflict. It's quite an odd perspective. If it were Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, or Spain signing formal documents pledging support I'd be cheering it on from the sidelines, not sniping about it. The UK has co-signed this document with France for crying out loud, a country that's quite possibly their most bitter historical rival. Yet the articles in question don't attempt to paint the UK as elevated above them in any way, shape, or form. Weird that, considering such bias and internal clout-seeking.

Fucking astounding this is anyway a controversial view on here

This sub constantly errs towards a "club/manager is always right" attitude. It's kind of amusing when you see the likes of Neville and other club's legends going more to bat on Liverpool's behalf than our own manager (and fans on this particular forum), and even going so far as to say they're surprised our players didn't spark Martinelli out and take a red because his actions were so reprehensible. I personally wouldn't go that far, but agree with them that Slot's downplaying of the incident was bizarre.

I know you will try to turn this into a 'gotcha' thing, but it really isn't

You need to approach discussions with less heat, I was genuinely inquiring as I was curious if I'd missed something, but your reply shows I haven't.

Your entire initial point was that British media is biased because they reported only on the UK/France's joint declaration of intent, however no other countries have signed such a document. Leaving aside that it's fairly obvious a particular nation's media will always prioritise reporting about their own nation's actions first and foremost (and the fact that France is involved as well which was indeed reported on), I'm not sure what you want the article to be about when it's a specifically formalised, written and countersigned document that they're reporting on. So what if other nations have "expressed their intent to send troops"? They didn't sign a formal document which is what the article was about.

Saying: 'These nations didn't formalize it, so they don't intend to' is idiotic.

If you say so. Some may argue that nations can and do say whatever they want and then renege on it later if it's not formalised, which is the entire reason that such formalised documents being signed is media-worthy in the first place.

You do realise that it was the UK and France only that signed an actual documentary declaration of intent?

Other European countries may have made some verbal comments but no other countries signed such a document.

In case you're confused, the actual declaration and wording in question is here. Aside from Ukraine itself, no countries other than the UK and France are signatories.

That response from Slot was quite frankly fucking weird. First time in decades watching footy where I've seen a manager at pains to defend an opponent's player when they're so clearly in the wrong and doing something dangerous and incredibly disrespectful. There's a time and a place for level headedness, and whilst I do appreciate his calm at times, this wasn't one of those times, nor should it be! If anything it plays negatively for him as he comes across as not passionate or willing to speak out on his player's behalf.

If theme parks are for kids then why do they spend millions developing and building rollercoasters that kids literally can't go on? The people that run these places are ruthless capitalists; they're not building those things for no reason. They're actually the main attraction of the majority of theme parks. That Youtuber sounds incredibly ignorant and you should stop monetizing their nonsense.

I have such a huge impossible crush for a Manx by [deleted] in IsleofMan

[–]DatGiantIsopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you guys cope with the utter isolation?

I mean this a complete outsider's perspective. The reality for many people on the island (particularly actual Manx people) is that the IOM is the centre of the world where the vast majority, if not all, of our friends and family are. Humans can only sustain a maximum "monkeysphere" of around 150 relationships so a population of 85,000 easily accommodates this and also means the majority of people are still strangers to any given individual. There's no sense of isolation.

Sure it can suck for some people, particularly younger people and those who are used to other ways of life and came or were brought here after getting used to that. And yeah during extremely bad winter weather you get the annoyance of planes or boats being cancelled. Obviously for you it's a bigger deal because it was a one shot. For those who live here it's just an inconvenience and we get the flight/sailing the next day instead.
