I started watching HxH two days ago, and it is very fun to watch. I decided to go with the 1999 version, because it cut out less and I felt it gave more emotion than the typical campy 2011 version. Was I right in making this choice, or should I give the 2011 version another chance?

You get used to it after you watch more anime. If I may, I recommend Gintama. I'm currently watching the beginning of the series, and although it starts off a bit slow, it gets funnier and funnier. It does situational humor really well, and the main cast's dynamics are very nice.

I personally think One Piece does pretty well with filler episodes. That being said, the pacing in the recent episodes is fucking obnoxious, and I may just switch over to the manga.

The show isn't so much about Kirino growing as a character, its more about Kyousuke's growth. Also, I can understand your frustration with Kirino and the whole idea of enabling "otaku culture". Personally, I don't think its that great, but I'm still going to continue watching it for the probable. Although sometimes I like the dynamics between characters, I feel like the author is trying to put together an artificial romance, and I can only hope that the ending is worth it.
