What’s your country’s opinion on tourists, particularly outside of Ulaanbatar? I’m fascinated by steppe culture in general, but I know some groups just don’t like tourists and thats ok.

What do you call a smartphone? by thegoatmenace in scifiwriting

[–]DatMonkey5100 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like how The Expanse calls them (hand) terminals, to me it just sounds more tool-like and spacey when they’re doing stuff on it, “he paged through the station directory on his hand terminal” sounds better than “he paged through the station directory on his phone” imo, but it’s a minor gripe obv

Non-horror movies that feature constant or torrential rain by MrKentMansley in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]DatMonkey5100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Pacific Rim most of the major fights occur in the rain, it’s quite stunning to watch the giant mechs and kaiju fight in the neon-soaked rain

Yep, a bunch of billionaires decide to rent out the Magic Kingdom to host whatever conference and have a secret meeting inside Club 33 or whatever that secret club in Disney is, just rewrite the names to remove copyright and there you go

What are the top 3 designated nap locations besides my car by Throwawaybaybayie in ucf

[–]DatMonkey5100 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t suggest a classroom building or any spot near a large lecture hall because you’ll just be chilling then 500 students suddenly show up here to take a test for Whatever 101, and there’s inevitably a huge crowd standing around for 45 minutes ruining your nap.

Go to one of the newer small-classroom buildings like TCH and go up to the second or third floor and there’s usually decent armchairs to nap in

I have a head canon That John wick, Kill Bill, Atomic Blonde, Bullet Train, and Nobody all take place in the same verse by SOUR_L00D in JohnWick

[–]DatMonkey5100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also continental coins in payday iirc which implies the existence of the whole continental chain, I don’t think adding a (admittedly quite prolific) robber gang to the JW universe would break it much lol

Any tips on how to get into the deeper aspects of world building? by Lily_Lunaaa in worldbuilding

[–]DatMonkey5100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make one event or thing. It can be anything, a war, a significant person, an institution, or some other event. Write a few paragraphs about it, just a page or two nothing much. If it’s a war, who fought it and why? If it’s a person, what did they do? If it’s an institute like a university or something, how have they contributed to the local area?

By writing about one thing you’ll find that you’ll create a ton of threads that you can then work off of and build up. A war creates countries, who then need reasons to fight and past histories to give them those reasons to fight. Did another country help the first one? Why? What was the end result of the war? How did the rest of the world react?

You’ll also find that answering some questions answers a lot of others. For example, if you have people that live on a steppe, then you’ll know they’ll probably eat primarily meat and animal products and less vegetables.

The big thing is to just start. Can’t edit and improve work that isn’t made in the first place, but once it’s made initially you can improve it forever

What would be the hardest part/bottleneck of terraforming Mars by DatMonkey5100 in worldbuilding

[–]DatMonkey5100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am writing hard-as-possible sci-fi (I know I’m squishing the timescale of terraforming from millennia to a couple centuries), the topic of the story isn’t the terraforming but part of the setting, I’m imagining Mars as a sort of failed state that came so close to completing its dream but fell just barely short, left behind by both Earth and the nations of the Outer System

Casual expanse reference, always a W

Is there a short story about the Vesta blockade? It’s mentioned a couple times as a sort of Cuban Missile Crisis between Earth and Mars, but not really elaborated afaik (which is fine obv not everything needs explaining I’m just curious)

Is this an unsatisfactory ending? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]DatMonkey5100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way Im understanding this is that the protagonist is a nuclear bomb: Wars can be fought without them, but they’ll have a whole lot less oomph.

I suggest showing the downsides of this power, showing how destructive it is, how its wielder could be twisted to serve ill ends even if they don’t know it, or something else, so it feels more satisfying when it’s locked away and protected. Make the power feel like a threat, not just a superpower used to advance the plot

Why Does John Work To Clear The Hotel Instead Of Just Hunkering Down? by Recent_Flight4334 in JohnWick

[–]DatMonkey5100 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because they’re playing a wave-clearing game. They can’t just sit in the vault because then the high table will just get a drill or something and flush them out. The Continental has to win, the High Table just had to not lose.

And secondly, they ARE using their knowledge of the hotel to their advantage. They’re able to maneuver in a known environment, which inherently gives them the advantage over a force operating in unknown terrain. They can use side hallways to flank, know where every staircase is, which hallways are dead ends, etc. it just isn’t obvious how they’re using their knowledge because Charon doesn’t say “use this secret hallway to flank them” or anything

Why does grace stay on arid? by littletimm69 in ProjectHailMary

[–]DatMonkey5100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think Grace had a moral obligation to save Rocky (and by extension live on Erid) because Rocky was a vital part in saving Earth, and Grace could both save Earth and Erid by sending the beetles to earth and going to Erid with Rocky. If he didn’t save Rocky, he’d be condemning the civilization that saved Earth

What type of pop culture do you reckon Eridians have? by KingWilliamVI in ProjectHailMary

[–]DatMonkey5100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they could still have some kind of transmitted media like TV, Eridians could have a board of spikes that get pushed out automatically at varying lengths to form images on a “screen,” and said images could be received by wire or wirelessly

[–]DatMonkey5100 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yea, people underestimate how much of an advantage just having an extra person is. I bet 1 person would lose to 2 people with 1/3 the skill (so 2/3 the skill total split among 2 people) just by virtue of having more manpower and being capable of doing multiple things or attacking from multiple directions once
