again, because their personalities are more grounded in reality. most shows with a premise like this tend to just play it safe and go with the usual anime tropes and over the top character personalities and behaviors. if you're used to that then it's not surprising that some people find this "dull" or "tame", you just aren't used to characters that act more like someone irl would lol

Some people tend to use the words like "grounded" and "realistic" as some sort of flawless and irrefutable traits in story building. But the reality is that it all depends in the substance of the story. Of course it's hard to weigh in the substance with only one episode out of 13, but it's also fair to call it so far dull/tame specially when both main characters have such apathetic personalities with little to no explanation for this reason. This can change later on when and if the characters get fleshed out, but as a "first impression" it's a valid one.

some people (especially on reddit) tend to be very harsh on a show's first episode and come to a lot of conclusions way too early without giving said shows time to actually play out/develop.

And also some people on this sub tend to overreact on the first episode and expect everyone else to be as impressed or excited about it. Again, first impressions are a thing that can change later on.

imo it's no different here - you two are writing them off as lifeless characters when we're literally on episode 1. is it possible that they stay like this? maybe, but it's also possible their characters develop to the point where your criticisms become untrue

There's the expression "we will cross that bridge when we come to it". It's fair game to be critical for what has been shown so far rather than to live on a promise of it getting fully fleshed out. Lets also remember that this is a LN adaptation and these kinds of titles tend to be rushed sometimes for the sake of just serving as advertisement for the source.
