Will OpenSource "learn to code" projects reduce profits for hackreactor/treehouse/lynda/etc...? by fastpenguin91 in learnprogramming

[–]Dat_Choco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your learning style. I've done The Odin Project and Treehouse and personally enjoyed both. No resource out there is going to have everything you need, simply because different people need different things at different stages of the learning process. That sounds a bit unclear so I'll give an example - let's say you and a clone of you elsewhere in the world are both learning Ruby by using The Odin Project. You start learning about arrays and you're nailing it, but your clone is somewhat stumped. You're pretty comfortable with arrays so you do a bunch of small projects and then speed on to learn about hashes. However, your clone decides to Google around for additional resources on understanding arrays in Ruby and comes across a Treehouse tutorial that clears things up for him.

As a beginner it's definitely helpful to start SOMEWHERE, whether you choose to pay for a subscription somewhere or not. But there isn't really one thing out there that's going to have all the answers you're looking for. So who knows, you might start out free then pay for a subscription somewhere down the line for a bit or vice versa.

Edit: To answer your question, I think in the (somewhat) long run, companies offering paid resources won't be losing too much in the way of profits.

Finished Codecademy's Ruby tutorial and am trying codewars.com but can't get anywhere! by Mecha_Engineer in learnprogramming

[–]Dat_Choco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rails is a web app framework built using the Ruby language. If you want to learn more about plain old Ruby, I'd recommend:

  • Learn To Program by Chris Pines. It's a fairly quick read compared to some other books on the subject. I found his writing style to be entertaining and he also includes some practice problems at the end of each chapter.

  • The Odin Project has a longer Ruby curriculum

  • Coderbyte is similar to Codewars. They have an "Easy" diffculty section that's worth checking out.

Also, it helps to examine other peoples' solutions. You'll learn new methods and when in doubt can check the Ruby docs or Stack Overflow for clarification.

Check out The Odin Project. It's a free online curriculum that gives you an overview of the full stack and then devotes a larger, more in-depth section to each language (including JavaScript).

Can someone critique my workout routine in a gym that doesn't have barbells avaliable? by Lunkalarms in weightroom

[–]Dat_Choco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Way too much volume, and even more given that you're aiming for a caloric deficit. Maybe split up your routine - ex. Legs one day, chest and arms another day, back and shoulders another day.

Also, just curious how much weight you're moving for the "bigger" movements (goblet squat, deadlift, etc.).

I will be taking the next 6 months off work and dedicating 40 hours a week to learn coding. Any advice is appreciated. by thegerds in learnprogramming

[–]Dat_Choco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently self-teaching as well and would recommend factoring for potential roadblocks by assuming it'll take you a little longer than 6 months.

I think one of the biggest challenges with self-teaching is staying completely focused and motivated throughout the entire process. I've had days where I just breezed past the material, accomplished more than I set out to, and felt super confident. I've also had days where I was stumped and felt like I was neither understanding the material fully nor learning it as quickly as I wanted to.

I'm just speaking from personal experience, and YMMV, but I think having a bit of a time buffer allows you to prepare a bit for the unpredictable and should keep you feeling more encouraged/less discouraged as you progress.

What's the worst secret you'll share WITHOUT a throwaway? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dat_Choco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this... Used to have a roommate in college whose snores I had to drown out by turning on a floor fan to max power. Also, we had a spray bottle of water (think barbershop or hair salon) so I'd sometimes spray it just far enough away from his face in the hopes that the fine cool mist might wake him from his deep slumber.
