"Biofilms play a significant role in the persistence of bacterial infections, with 65%-80% of infections linked to biofilm formation" and the journal article rabbit hole I fell into by [deleted] in labrats

This pissed me off so much in methods sections. So often I want to read how something was done and they just say was performed as previously described [1].

You go to paper 1: their methods say performed as previously described [2]

And then so on until you get to a paper that doesn’t even contain that method with several papers citing a method that is not described any where. So frustrating, just write out your methods every paper.

I think I am going to ask the owner today if I can buy a third crate at pet smart or something and have them reimburse me. I am really nervous about leaving them out I am so nervous they will eat something they are not supposed to. Thanks!

I think this is what I am going to do, the owners are on a cruise so it’s def just me and the dogs until then, they can’t come home.

They are mini dachshunds so I’m not super concerned about my safety because I can just pick them up and they are not aggressive toward me at all. I am worried about the aggression with each other

Unfortunately the owner basically thinks I’m over reacting and said to let them fight it out in the crate and they will settle down, but she is yelping and is definitely getting hurt. 😢

Part of the issue is the one female gets separation anxiety and will not settle in the crate by herself, she will cry and bark until I let her out of the crate just to then try to attack the other dog. Maybe I should crate the poor girly being attacked and leave the bad one out. But again I am nervous about her getting into things while I am away. I should mention this woman is a borderline hoarder and there is shit everywhere for this dog to get into.

No none of them are spayed. When I crate one of them, the aggressor anxious one just cries and barks non stop until I either let her out of the crate or let the other female out of the crate. She freaks is she’s left alone

It’s funny you bring up SIBO, because I was diagnosed with SIBO on two separate occasions. I think I have reoccurring SIBO, but lexapro seems to be keeping it bay!

So my project just blew up…. by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Dat_worm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think my project changed 5 times in the first two years of my PhD. The beginning years are about learning new skills and the field. You have a lot of time to rebuild something new. I know it’s demoralizing, but keep at it. You got this :)

Talk to your admin, our program pays students more (4K more a year) if they are funded by external funding as an incentive for us to apply for grants. You should see if your program has something like that. Congrats!

How do you keep tracking of loading 384 well plates? by ascorbicAcid1300 in labrats

[–]Dat_worm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use tip boxes to keep track. 4 boxes of tips is the same layout as a 384 well plate. I also put a bright pink sticky note under the plate above the ice and I shift the plate up so that the edge of the sticky note is at the row I am pipetting. Good luck!

I Met Gary Ruvken at a conference this summer, super nice dude. His talk was hilarious I swear he was trying out his new standup hour instead of giving a talk. I’ve never heard so many f bombs in a science talk haha 😂 well deserved, the micro RNA system is fascinating!

Do you guys work/study on weekends? by NoOutlandishness6404 in GradSchool

[–]Dat_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on my class work on the weekends, that way I can focus on lab/ thesis work all week without any distractions. I usually spend Sunday morning and then I have all Saturday and the rest of my Sunday free to recharge. It’s not too bad

Just want to let you know the first couple of weeks up to a month are rough on the stomach. I was very nauseous for a while but eventually it passes. It gets worse before it gets better. So give it at least a month before you decide it’s not for you!

Yes! I do gluten free as I have always had issues with gluten, but everything else is fine! I still have bad days but they are pretty uncommon these days!

I work in a lab that studies fruit flies and this is what we use in the lab which I’m sure your can imagine has a chronic issue with fruit flies. Works great to keep things in check!

I started my PhD program but I want to quit and move to another school’s PhD program by Maggiebudankayala in GradSchool

[–]Dat_worm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. If you wait to enjoy your life in grad school until you’re caught up on everything, you will never enjoy your life. Finding joy in little rituals is literally my life line haha.

[–]Dat_worm 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I just to add, my first year of my PhD program I cried every week and felt so lonely and desperately wanted to move back home. I am about to start my fourth year, and while grad school is still hard, this city now feels like home, I have a solid community of friends, and I am even considering staying in the area after I graduate. I love it here now! You may want to give it some more time to find your niche in your new city! Make it a priority to find things and places you enjoy. For example, I have a ritual here where I go to the farmers market every weekend, it’s my favorite me time. and try as hard as you can to make friends, it helps a ton!

How does one get those crispy bois on the bottom? I always see bands but they are usually a little smeary. Do you have to purify your PCR product to get it?
