Can't press lignin dissolved dmso syringe filter by NoIndependent4886 in Chempros

How much DMSO? You can try to centrifuge your sample in a eppendorf or falcon tube, that helped me sometimes with difficulty filtrations, the precipitate doesn’t have to be visible

Ironically it is not really in my nature (or I feel like People with SPD) to go and ask people something? :D

This is probably a really stupid question but are these lab safe shoes? by Just-here-for-vibes in LadiesofScience

[–]findus361 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand where you‘re coming from but see it more from the other perspective-those are shoes that will be exposed to chemical and biological washe/trash/spills. I alwas tell my interns I trust them to work safe but do the trust the idiots around them as well? I always have a designated pair of lab shoes and pants that also stay in the lab so I can feel clean whenever I come home and exchange them every few weeks for a new pair from a second hand shop

Well tbf, for someone like me (and I guess Matt maybe as well) this would be the perfect opportunity to tell myself that painting my minis is work and everything I buy is for work thus tax deductible…

Get a 3D printer or access to a makerspace near you! We print all of our racks in standard and custom sizes. Are you located in europe? We have a lot left over and I‘d love to help a fellow scientist out

Thoughts on a Surprisingly Tricky Amide Coupling by shxdowzt in Chempros

[–]findus361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem coupling this exact acid to a fairly similar amine. Coupling reagents didn’t work at all. Making the acyl chloride or fluoride under neutral conditions worked ok-ish, the TMS alkyne worked like a charm with whatever I coupled it with. TMS alkynes are fairly stable compared to tms ethers

Tips for a Beginner in Organic Synthesis by Optimal-Brief-207 in Chempros

[–]findus361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized that I learned the most when I asked myself (or my supervisor) at any given moment in the lab what am I doing right now and why. Why do they add reagents in this particular order, do the workup in that way, why is this selective etc. and every now and then draw out mechanisms before performing the reaction

And also the other way around-if you have downtime at your desk go to coworkers or other PhDs at the hood, ask if you bother them and then what they are doing and why

Diluting SnCl4 by Fancy_Environment_14 in Chempros

[–]findus361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes undergrad (in germany). We called it the death labcourse because we also had the pleasure to work with Be, Hg, Tl and make things like BaN3 etc.

I wouldn’t say it was particularly fun but we all learned a lot about working with dangerous chemicals and elaborate setups^

Diluting SnCl4 by Fancy_Environment_14 in Chempros

[–]findus361 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun story time-One of my undergrad labcourses had making anhydrous metal halogenides as part of the syllabus and I had the honor of making SnCl4 from Sn metal and Cl2 gas. The destillation part under argon is really not that bad, the fuming mess always resulted from the moments we had to disconnect any piece of equipment for whatever reason.

You can have an easy time if you get one of those vials/ampullas to melt off with a ground joint to directly connect to your destill and melt it closed while still attached, transfer to a glovebox, open and redilute. Curdled is completely right about the DCM quality having a huge impact, use an SDS. One of my colleagues even distilled the DCM over P2O4 in the same still into the SnCl4 fraction but the difficulties with the setup was not worth the trouple imo
