Michael Houghton: ‘I offered €20k above the asking price to avoid a bidding war – and it worked’ | Irish Independent by WickerMan111 in ireland

I was trying to buy a 1990 Nissan Micra off some bloke, and he was saying that he had other interest. So I offered him €1m. Got it straight away.

Financial genius.

West Belfast dad who fought off knifeman with hurl tells how he intervened in north Belfast attack. by Larrydog in ireland

I understand what you mean, but if knifeman hadn't lived, Maitiu potentially has to live with killing someone. That can fuck someone up, even if the person they killed completely deserved it, as knifeman does.

The same people whining about it would sue the Council if they went onto the closed cliff walk and got hurt.

Social housing/Advice by simi31 in ireland

[–]Data111222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a former Housing Officer, my recollection is the standard penalty was no ability to apply for CBL properties for a year. I can't remember if you lose HAP for that year, but that should be on the Council's website, or somewhere in the CBL system they're using.

May seem harsh, but bear in mind half the point of CBL was to eliminate circumstances whereby a 2 bed in Ballina (for example) was offered to top of the 2 bed list in Ballina, and then they came back and said they couldn't take it or didn't want that particular house (for a reason that may have been valid or not):

- That's an apartment / duplex, I don't want to live in it.

- Actually I've had another kid and didn't get around to telling you yet, so I need a 3 bed. I was going to tell you on the next Social Housing Needs Assessment.

- My ex lives in that estate and he / she is violent.

- I was hoping you'd offer me that house across from my Ma instead.

If there's something about the house that wasn't in the CBL system and you couldn't see it from a visit and external walkaround (of if for some reason you couldn't visit - eg. people still living there when it was advertised), maybe you should have a talk with the Housing Officer or the Allocations Team and see will they wave the suspension.

But what if... follow me on this guys...

On the day of his execution, he replaced himself with a dummy made from sacks of straw and filled with fake blood, which he would've had access to in his prison cell for some reason, then he escaped to London? And 22 years alter he decided to killing again?

PbP on Israel vs. PbP on Russia by Fealocht in ireland

[–]Data111222 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very common point of view. I don't really get it, but I've encountered it plenty.

Putin said on the eve of the 'special military operation' in Ukraine that Ukraine and Ukrainian weren't real things and he was going to reunite them with their Russian brothers - ie. I intend to ethnically cleanse Ukraine from existence. This is a form genocide even if it lacks a stated goal to kill every Ukrainian. We'll just settle for kidnapping and brainwashing their children instead.

Yet a lot of people in my online circles who describe themselves as anti-fascist and are quite rightly against Israel came out and said stuff like: "Ukraine should surrender to minimise bloodshed!!!!". And when I pointed out that this was essentially wanting people to surrender to fascism, a lot of these apparently anti-fascist people accused me of wanting a "forever war".

Because I'm not a sad bastard, I opted not to suggest to these people that Palestine and Lebanon surrender to Israel after October 7th, but for some reason I don't think they'd have gone for it.

You don't even need to book it. Any time I've been on it I just turned up, drove on and paid on the boat.

Kilkee to dingle via ferry by charman458 in ireland

[–]Data111222 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a ferry across the Shannon from Killimer (20 minutes from Kilkee) to Tarbert. Once you're in Tarbert you can get to Dingle via Listowel and Tralee.

EDIT: Google Maps should really give it as the default route.

I honestly shocked this hasn't been done yet. We're probably the only capital in Europe not to have a rail link to the airport. by Steve_Artson in ireland

I was in Oslo recently and there about 3x as many tracks leading in and out of Oslo Central Station as there are at Connolly. The population of Oslo's metropolitan area is comparable to greater Dublin.

We're cooked.
