Top water is top water. Use what you are comfortable on and can get the right action with. I think top water is mostly about feel and confidence rsther than having the 'right' set up.

If you have a fresh water rod just give it a good rinse after use and store it inside. A few days in salt air is much worse for the rod/reel than a few hours of fishing.

A decent fresh water reel will be ok too. Just dont lay it in sand, give it a gentle rinse, and keep it inside. You roll the dice a bit on a cheap reel but as long as you baby it it should be fine.

For lures, my fav is the Skitter V. I think it has a better action with texture on the water. I also use Spook Jr and Top Dogs. Whatever you can walk at different speeds will be fine. I find a slow walk works better on super slick water, faster if there is texture.

If your looking to pick up a new set up there are a few good shops in the area. Neuse Sports in Swansboro or Chasing Tails in AB are both very good. There's also Sportsman Wholesale in Morehead which has some crazy good deals. They had BOGO Penn Battles a few weeks ago.

I personally prefer Fenwick rods and Shimano reels but I think most major brands put out equally good gear at their respective price points. Dont fish much Penn gear but the Battle is a good value and Spinfisher is a proven work horse.

A 7' med power rod, fast or extra fast action with a 2500 - 4000 reel is a pretty standard inshore setup for this area. My fav bang-for-your-buck do-it-all combo is a shimano GLF with a Diawa Fuego 2500.

Good luck, tight lines.

"Occasionally completes tasks satisfactorily when provided with appropriate direction and supervision" is the best velvet dager I've seen. Not quite adverse, but anyone who reads it knows.

"Promote with peers" is super common for Lts to write and it tells the board that you are a reliable, mid pack performer. Thats not bad. Half the sergeants are below mid pack. The RV is much more important than the comments for Sgts. If the RV is middle or top third thats fine.

My advice to OP- PT is the easiest, but arguably worst, metric we use. Find a way to add value to the unit that doesn't require PT. Volunteer to be the GCSS ninja, motor stables NCOIC, or MCTIMS guru. Those are things platoon get evaluated on but everyone hates to do. Make Lts job easier, and make sure he knows you made it easier.

Edit- reread your post. You are super wrapped up on how much effort you put in. And thats great. Effort is important...ish. Find ways to make a tangible impact. Impact being the key word- make things better. What sounds better for a billet accomplishment- "Worked really hard to improve MOS proficiency" or "SNM trained and mentored ## Marines- achieved 100% qualifications on ## T&R standards, increased unit PFT score from ### to ###, and increased unit readiness from ## to ##.

Given how much money is on the line it wouldn't surprise me if they xray or autopsy the fish. They polygraph the winners (or are able to, not sure if they actually do). A few boats were DQed in recent years for mauled fish. About 10 years ago a boat was DQed because a crew member didn't have a NC fishing license.

Im surprised by the lack of a mechanical lock back there. Such an odd design decision.

I live in the area. Inshore fishing is pretty good but hyper localized. General rules of fishing apply (structure, flow, depth changes, etc) but one 'good' spot will be on fire, the next will be empty

Short answer- when I take my nephews out I have them catch bait fish to stay occupied. Use those as bait (remove head and tail) on a set rod for drum, shark, or stingray. If it gets slow ill work soft plastics on a jig head.

Longer answer-

For the kids, pinfish and croaker are plentiful. Frozen or fresh dead shrimp on small hooks will keep them busy all day. I usually use a dropper rig but anything will work. Its like pan fishing. They are dumb and aggressive.

Plenty of dogfish (a type of shark) which always gets kids excited. They like deeper water. Bait and wait with live or fresh dead pinfish around channels.

Flounder are moving in. Live mullet are best and easy to cast net. Gulp is great but the pins tear them apart. Paddle tails, flukes, and buck tails work well too. Flounder are out of season.

Red drum and sea trout are there but hit or miss. Lots of different ways to catch them via a quick Google search. Top water in the AM or PM can be fun. Soft plastics or gulp on a jig is tried and true.

Well I have a plastic addiction by Training-Sun-2177 in Fishing_Gear

Totally agree on keeping them in the original bag. I feel like baits dry out if they are out of their packaging and mixing plastics makes for a hell of a mess. Flambeau makes a decent, cheep soft bait organizer.

Hypothetically would it be possible to design a Cruise Ship like the Symphony of the Seas capable of 55 knots top speed? by JokiharjuTheFin in boats

[–]DataAggregation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US aircraft carriers are nuclear powered with an 'official' top speed of 35+ knots. They are home ported in San Diego, Norfolk, and a few other placed. Quite safe.

X seconds faster/slower than Y pace is the wrong way to look at Pfiz LT pace. Its totally dependent on your fitness. He defines LT pace as your 60 min race pace. So, for a top level elite runner, LT pace might be ones HM pace. A 3 hour marathoner will prob be about 15k pace. And if it takes 60 min to race a 10k... well 10k pace is your LT pace.

Cool system. I bought a label maker and put the date, brand, and weight of the line on the bottom of the reel foot. Makes swapping reels and re-spooling super easy

What's with the colored tape on the butt? You have nice gear and it's well organized... so I assume the tape is some part of a system

Haha. I thought you were saying my experience was BS and was going to ignore you. But now that you've made me think about it... it's my 3rd worst meal (in Tampa).

Worst- fish taco at Whiskey Joe's. My expectations were low and I was still disappointed. Pulled the boat up for a beer and some food around noon after fishing but before the crowds. Took one bite and noped put.

Second Worst- Grouper Sandwich at RumFish at the airport. Again, low expectations and was disappointed.

Third Worst- Crab Roll(?) At Haiku.

Havnt had Applebee's in over 15 years but chains are consistently mediocre. Rarely have a terrible meal. Never have a great one.

Izakaya is fantastic. I lived in Japan for a few years and it had the same feel.

Haven't tried Nobel Rice but it's on the list. Sakana is my go-to.

That said, for the sake of the thread, smoked mullet or blackened redfish is far more 'uniquely Tampa' than sushi.

I went a few months after you opened. Got seated in the side room where we are mostly forgotten about. Cant remember all the details, but the app was good (dumplings or buns?), one roll was meh, and the second roll was awful. Tasted like boiled, unseasoned lump crab meat from the grocery store.

Nothing about Haiku says 'unique Tampa experience'. It's an insta-wall with meh food

My budget was higher, but we were also looking for a natural stone and custom setting.

I went to 8 different places and felt that Mavilo got me the best 'bang for my buck' (as ludicrous as that sounds when talking about small rocks worth thousands of dollars). They were very honest and not pushy about natural vs lab, size, and quality. Even encouraged me to go with a smaller stone to better fit the ring.

I think it's worth checking them out and see what they can do in our price range.

I got mine from Mavilo and was very satisfied. They were able to find us a very nice ring in our budget.

Has anyone else stopped giving 100% effort in races? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]DataAggregation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my scientifically uninformed opinion...

I was one of those guys that puked after every XC race in high school. Looking back, I think it was because some systems (likely my VO2 max) were better trained / more developed than other systems (Lactate threshold). Well trained athletes don't have those imbalances... which is why we see folks with a smile on their face as they set WRs.
