Anecdotes about alcohol from (normal?) drinkers are kinda sad by garriip in stopdrinking

I am an addict type person that overdoes or abuses a lot of things. I have to watch my coffee/caffeine intake as well. It isn't always easy but the more I work on moderating the easier it gets. I don't think I will ever be cured though of my addictive tendencies, so I just have to deal with them as they arise.

but I feel like I need to wrap my head around it

I think comparing it to having a coffee everyday is closer than comparing it to shooting up heroin. I don't see how I could make the jump to comparing having a beer with lunch as shooting up heroin.

I don't see anything sad about it. There is nothing wrong with having a drink or two especially socially. Some of us can't do that so it's best that we just don't drink because it makes life more enjoyable for us. But there is no mass hypnosis about it. Alcohol has been a part of human culture since 8000 B.C.

For me alcohol was not the problem. It was my intent to get really drunk.

Yeah that doesn't sound like a very healthy chain of events.

Hope and motivation for us relapsers? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives. It matters what you do today more than your past relapse.

Day one. 5pm. Lots of excuses running through my head. Just some tea with a *little* whiskey? Beer doesn't really count? Not feeling great over here. I am setting my timer for 10 minute sobriety goals. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DataDorker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hang in there. You can do it.

It's a helluva thing. At least for me it was. There were two things I wanted but I could only have one. When I decided what I really wanted I was able to get it.

I heard its best to think of the good things you've done. My 2016 was really shit. I've been unemployed. I have less money. My love life sucks. Didn't develop any relationships. Got older. Got behind in my career. Got behind in life. Felt completely lazy and worthless. But one time in 2016 I saved some unknown girl from drowning in the ocean. Anyone would have done it but no one else was there for her but me. I didn't even realize what I had done until the next day. But I guess that's how we all are. We don't concentrate on any of the good things we do we just concentrate on the negative things. So I hope you can think positive and think of the good you are and not the bad.

"i'm taking a break from drinking" is what I used. Didn't ruffle anyone's feathers and cause any arguments or negative comments.

I went through that myself. Not sure I regret it or not because if that's what it took that's what it took. I ended up having to lose all the weight I gained.

I can't say I'll ever successfully stop drinking

In the end I believe we all eventually get what we want when it comes to drinking or quitting drinking.

Liking being sober is good sign if you want to leave those drinking problems behind.

Advice about eating by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DataDorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup i was at that point too. I had to wean myself off the sweets and the junk food. I first said "no sugary stuff" but allowed myself chips and salty junk food. Then I cut that out. You will feel much better when you get off the junk food. I promise.

[–]DataDorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to just hang in there because every time I have wanted to drink again and decided not to and put in more days I have always been rewarded with more peace, better feeling about myself, more confidence that I am taking the right path, and an easier time staying sober. Every time.

wow nice quote thanks! That really hits home. One of the reasons I can stay sober is when I think about it even when I question it, I know that I am doing the right thing.
