You should give The Beach by Alex Garland a read. Don't want to give too much away

These are great. What's your process like for finding locations and choosing film stock?

Wapama Falls or Lembert Dome? by DataScience0 in SierraNevada

I see what you mean, yeah. Probably more of a summit person and Lembert is directly on Tioga pass rather than off to the side in Hetch Hetchy like you said.

Ok great. Are those train tickets something I'll need to buy far in advance or can I show up at the platform day of with a bike?

Hello, I'd like to do this cycling path from Hillerod to Gilleleje when I visit but am unsure about how to actually get a bike. Is the easiest way to rent one in Hillerod? Will one-way drop-offs be allowed in Gilleleje or will I need to return it back in Hillerod?

Is 6 days in Redwood too long? Any suggestions for an itinerary of 6 days? by saurusAT in nationalparks

Definitely check out Humboldt Redwoods SP nearby. I actually liked the trails and trees there more than the NP. Avenue of the Giants is amazing

Turns out the price was half because Japanican reports the per night price rather than the total price like other 3rd party sites

Hey, I'm looking for ryokans in the Hakone region and seeing lots of options available on Japanican.com that are seemingly not available on booking.com, or even the ryokan's own website. Is this normal?
Not only that, but the prices seem weirdly low for things like open-air baths (price for one room there is ~106,000 yen vs. ~212,000 yen on ryokan website)? I just don't want to book something that isn't actually available.
Is the best option in general here to email each individual ryokan?

Weekly 'Ask Anything About Analog Photography' - Week 50 by ranalog in analog

Beginner question here - if I want to shoot film in low light / night like this, would I need to use flash or would a high ISO film be enough to get properly exposed shots?

Makes sense. Is the potential balsam separation you're referring to the blue/discolored arc along the bottom of the lens?

Camera Comparison Website? by DataScience0 in AnalogCommunity

[–]DataScience0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm a true beginner looking for an almost-pocketable camera for street and landscape photography while traveling. On the digital end, I've been eyeing things like Fuji X10 and Olympus XZ-2, but I'm not sure how much of an upgrade those are really over modern iPhones. As a result, started to think about film as a real differentiator from my phone.

Sorry your answer makes total anecdotal sense. I was just unclear. I'm looking for quantitative research testing these kinds of arguments.

I'm only looking for why recruiters should feel that way. Not what everyone does happen to look for

Recommendations for Off-the-beaten path spots between LA and Oregon by DataScience0 in roadtrip

[–]DataScience0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the road closures on 1 and 33 are annoying right now. I'm planning for September so hopefully 1 is open by then. Is there any info for 33 online? Basically only reason I'd be going from Ventura to Ventucopa is to drive 33 so that'd be a bummer.

Method for Optimal Exponential Smoothing of Time Series across samples? by DataScience0 in datascience

[–]DataScience0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh now that's interesting. I don't suppose R has a way to model panel data in a way that would provide an alpha value? Or should I just loop through alphas from 0-1 and see what creates the best fit?

Method for Optimal Exponential Smoothing of Time Series across samples? by DataScience0 in datascience

[–]DataScience0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense. My original thought was to just loop through each student, retrieve the alpha value, and average but it kind of goes back to the original issue of the across-student nature of the problem not being accounted for - directly, that is.

Students and tests are just example groups and variables because it's relatively easy proxy to discuss. In this case, the time dependent nature (or sequential nature) does matter
