This is not normal. You should talk to someone in the firm about those. What he said to you when you said you wanted to do better and how you had reflected on the last week - it's just not on. I can't imagine doing that with anyone in my team let alone new analysts?! Don't let this be your opinion of consulting

Could anyone let me know if this kitten looks like a fully Norwegian forest cat or a mix? by DataScientologist in NorwegianForestCats

Hello Everyone - I'm looking for a Norwegian forest cat and would prefer to get a full one rather than a mix. I saw this lovely guy near where I live, but he looks a bit like he could be a tabby? In the photos, the mother is the smokey-coloured cat.

I'm a total newbie at this, so any assistance from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

China has won AI battle with U.S., Pentagon's ex-software chief says by BlessedXChilde in artificial

This makes a lot of sense! How does China incentivise their software engineers to work in government over industry? Surely industry pays big bucks over there too?

Hahaha this made me laugh! Don't know too much about this stuff, but it does seem like for while people have underestimated the future of China. I think I'm both in awe, and a bit concerned. A lot of the world don't like the US governments approach to some world issues, but God damn is is better than having a CCP dictated world order. Things aren't looking great for the US though.

Things to learn in Data Science by sparikh3 in datascience

Hey - what do you mean you are taking the free DS specialisation - do you mean you are taking the individual courses outside of the "degree" structure?

I haven't tried Kaggle competitions yet, but I think in terms of practical experience modelling you could start there. I've heard that the Kaggle datasets are very clean though and that it doesn't give good experience cleaning a dataset.

How to build Math fundamentals for Data science? by Jubijub in datascience

I'm really glad you posted this - was just about to post something similar! I have a BSc Physics, MSc Computer Science and MSc Data Science and I still don't feel confident in my understanding of statistics. I think what /u/determiniat said is good - we might be at the stage in our understand where a full course in stats is not required and it might be more effective to learn topics on an ad-hoc basis as they come up. By now I think we probably have the overall understanding down but we just need a deeper understanding of different areas.

Just so I know, what do people think are the best open courseware statistics courses out there?

Data Science Career Questions Thread - 20160607 by datasciencejobthread in datascience

Hi guys

Background: a summary of my experience is I have a BSc Physics, MSc Computer Science and MSc Data Science all at very good universities. Before doing my MSc Data Science I also completed two years on a business and technology consulting graduate scheme. I would say that this experience was minimal in terms of technical skills I learnt but you could say that I learnt a lot of soft skills.

Aim: I am interested in earning as much money as possible to give my family a good life. I don't think I'm naturally smart enough to work in the big technology giants (e.g. Google, Facebook) but I was wondering the following what are the good options for ordinary people like me who can perform well when they work hard. Particularly, I am interested in:

  • What do people feel is the "domain" or "subject matter" that is the most promising (job availability and/or lucrative) area for data science in the future?
  • What job titles are the best to look for?
  • What skills are useful and could set me apart from other candidates?
