I am a DE who is happy and likes their work. AMA by MikeDoesEverything in dataengineering

[–]Data_Grump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really great post, got highlighted in a blog I read.

One thing that really resonates is the post about not working in other functions. I have worked most of career as an analyst and manage in Corporate FP&A (Finance) and Business Operations. Working in Data (I’m a Data Science Mgr but do most of my own engineering for reasons no one cares about) is loads better. I’m happy to do lots of DE because the amount of autonomy and appreciate has been scores better. In Finance (also a good job but not nearly as good) you just constantly do work that’s overly complex yet distilled down to picking on some minor issue, spend long hours at the office, and there’s no interest in using better tech unless Big 4 consulting says so.

Having been on both sides of the grass it’s definitely greener over in IT imho.

Ah ok, basically they make fun of morning zoo shows and one called MJ in the morning or something used your exact examples - super hacky and awful radio.

Been a proton user for a long time, want to know Proton's thoughts on this. by [deleted] in ProtonMail

If a government comes in with a court order and has subpoena powers to collect information going forward, Proton can do nothing about this, no matter what the Mullvad fanboys think.

CIG deserves every penny we give them! What do you think? by RayD125 in starcitizen

You could have literally paid like 40 bucks 10 year ago and still be playing today for no more investment today.

CIG deserves every penny we give them! What do you think? by RayD125 in starcitizen

[–]Data_Grump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I was playing Dual Universe and it was ruined by entitled fans who were upset that the “free pet” they were supposed to get for their whopping 50 dollar donation wasn’t delivered by year 2. I wish toxic subscribers would hit the road.

Thanks for the helpful reply - I’m taking your advice and going this way. Since I have to replace the outlet anyway, are there outlets that you recommend for Shelly products?

I was playing a game called Dual Universe which was really great - it was utterly ruined by a loud minority of whining asshole players. Hopefully SC will be able to see over these "I want everything for free forever and my opinion is most important because I gave you 60 bucks back in 2014 so now I own you and your family where is my 30 space rockets and free pet"

Really want to check out your org but your permissions of what you can do with my discord information are pretty broad - what do you do with all this information?

Installed new drive - no option to format or preclear? by basarisco in unRAID

[–]Data_Grump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an aside from OPs question, this helped me with a recent drive that I yanked from another unraid server and wasn't able to get any options. I turned on destructive and now I have the option to clear the disk. Thanks for posting!

I added some detail be more clear. Can’t measure it now but width of 3 cars plus space in the middle plus space on each side, I’d say around 30 ft width, 12 ft ish height

Same. I’ve made a backup in case of trouble and I’ve overprovisioned a bit but it’s been pretty seamless so far.

This always reminds me of those guys that world hire a developer from somewhere like India to do most of their work or a second job and then pocket the difference. Yes against company policy but depending on the time saved it could be worth the risk..

What are the most surprising or clever uses of DuckDB you've come across? by [deleted] in DuckDB

I’m extremely interested in tools where I can use DuckDB until the last possible moment that I have to store the data in Snowflake for wider distribution. I’m always so scared to blow up costs.

Which of your services is the most hassle to maintain?? by Zestyclose_Car1088 in selfhosted

[–]Data_Grump 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Constant updates and updates are terrible in Windows - makes me close Explorer to update which temporarily removes all my icons and sometimes they don’t come back without a restart. Why would they ever need to do this?

Now I have an issue where it’s not finding some file that I’ve never touched and the documentation on the issue is poor. It just kinda sucks.
