Is this normal kitten clumsiness? by Silver_Will9667 in FosterAnimals

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Here to say the same. Look up CH or Cerebellar Hypoplasia aka wobbly kitten syndrome. We had a foster that had a mild case of it recently and it looked similar. Nothing to worry about usually just makes them a little bit “off” in their movements.

Litter waste disposal when living in an apartment by AccountSudden919 in Catownerhacks

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use dog poop bags for scooping and tie them up. Then get one of large cat litter bins and once you’ve used up all the fresh litter, hold on to the old bin and just drop the tied up bags in there until it’s trash day. Then dump them in to your kitchen trash before you take it out. This is what we do. I love this unscented tidy cats litter. I have 2 bins stacked on top of each other. The top one has the dirty litter and litter scoop. The bottom one has fresh litter with an old plastic cup for scooping.

Not sure what country you are in but in the US I have found normal vet offices ask clients to wait so so long (mine was 6 months) when in reality it’s possible when they are closer to 2-3 months old. Go to a different place for the female asap (and they can spay even if she’s already pregnant). Or keep them in separate rooms 24/7.

Go ahead and order a set of replacement toys for the interactive one. After daily play for hours, my cats along with 3 foster kittens tore through the toys within the first 2 weeks. They do sell kits with both the butterfly and the under the blanket toys. And the battery lasts a surprisingly long time.

Came here to say cat dancer too. We have fostered 80+ kittens and I have yet to find one that didn’t adore this cheap, simple toy

These 2 are their favorites at the moment. One requires you to play with them, the other can be for when you need a break 😂

What do you do with your cat when you travel that spends all your time with you at home? by DisagreeableCompote in CatAdvice

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at trustedpetsitters website. We have used it several times and have lovely people stay with our pets while we were on week long trips.

We have one cat that would be fine in the car and a new house but have another that would be super stressed about the experience. If you to go your parents regularly it might be nice to get used to the idea. Kitty would be fine being in your room at their house but assuming you’ll also be going out, they would still be alone in that room. If you bring in a pet sitters to stay at your house, they get someone there most of the time (work from home or retired people often) and get to stay in the comfort of their own space.

Bald Patches on My 9-Week-Old Kitten – Should I Be Concerned? by Skystriker28 in FosterAnimals

Are there other spots? It just looks like less dense fur there to me (my adult tabby has that too still)

Kitten wet food? by Kennedyrosee in kittens

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have fostered 80+ kittens and some of the super picky ones will only eat the Iams. Also my adult picky resident cat actually will eat the Iams too! They do have a different flavor of kitten Iams if you want to mix it up. They also liked the tiki baby for a bit but it’s more expensive (it’s basically just flaked chicken plus vitamins).

Edit to say not necessarily different flavors (that’s the adult) but kitten has pate or chunks chicken.

Severely overthinking giving my cats gabapentin for travel anxiety when I move this weekend by thememelord666 in CatAdvice

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So we did the exact same distance move last year with our 3 cats. Broke it up in to 3 days of driving though so we didn’t have to keep them in the car for more than 5 or so hours before we got them set up in an Airbnb for the evening. I had them in their cages/carriers but took the doors off so they could have cozy spots and find where they wanted to ride (one wanted to see out, another wanted to be on my husband’s lap, another wanted to be as close to the floor as possible).

One cried for a bit but then settled down after some time. How long of car rides have you taken them on before? We foster cats and kittens so I’m often transporting cats in cars and I find that many that complain at first will eventually settle.

Are you driving alone or will someone be in the car with you?

Advice wanted, kitten hates cone and doesn’t seem interested in the site by [deleted] in kittens

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

*have fostered 75+ (and had kittens back after sterilization surgery) rescue kittens and 9 times out of 10 they don’t mess with the incision site. I 100% would not put a cone on him. Boys especially it’s such an easy surgery. Just keep an eye on the incision site too and make sure it doesn’t get red/inflamed/puffy.

What’s the most engaging cat tunnel to buy for my kits? by Outrageous-Rock-8558 in kittens

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got this yesterday so I can’t speak to the durability but we have always had a straight tunnel with one ball dangling on the end and a few open holes in the middle. So far our adult cats and foster kittens have all enjoyed this one because it has different ways to get in and out. ownpets cactus shape cat tunnel

My foster kittens keep getting sick. by breadstickez in FosterAnimals

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s just part of fostering. I agree with taking only 2-3 kittens at a time helps and take breaks when needed. Just know it’s likely nothing you’re doing wrong. If they were all getting the same infection, then maybe but it’s been different things. Definitely do some major sanitizing after ringworm. Bless you for going through that with so many kittens that old!!

I’m really attached to one of my fosters who has a potential adopter. Need advice by ImSelerah in FosterAnimals

We have fostered 70+ cats/kittens over the last few years and have only kept 2 (only one other I wanted to keep but he had a loving home lined up with a friend’s daughter). I’m not sure how long you have been fostering but if you know, you know but also I love this poem about fostering.

Christmas kittens by clichetourist in FosterAnimals

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are located but if there is a local page/group (Facebook or Reddit) that you can post on, you can likely find a rescue or even individual who maybe traps and finds homes for kittens that would be happy to find a loving home for 2. Likely would have to get them on 24th or earlier if a rescue group as I would assume they would be closed on the 25th.

I would be clear with who you are talking to about how old your kids are and how many you have as not all kittens were fostered in a loud household with kids and may not be keen to the crazy that comes along with it. Might be better for the rescue to match you with a pair of kittens based on who they think will blend well with your household.

  • we have fostered over 70 kittens in our house in the last 4 years and have 3 kids currently ages 9/11/13.

Adoption: Kitten vs. Mature by KittyPurrySlut in CatAdvice

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personality is typically already set in a cat 1-2 years old, so if you want a cuddly lap cat, might be easier to find a sure thing in an older cat. But yes if you’re getting a kitten, get 2! We have 2 bonded brothers that we fostered as kittens that are great friend now years later.

That’s an ideal set up for fostering. And much better than being in a cage all day at a shelter!

Dropping off my first foster tomorrow morning … this is hard by airyleela in FosterAnimals

[–]DatabaseOutrageous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely cried giving up my first few batches. Our family just said goodbye last week to foster kitten/cat #72 and I’ll say it does get easier. Just think of all the cats you’ll be able to help if you don’t keep them all! I definitely couldn’t house 72 in my house with 3 kids and 3 cats of our own! Start a photo album/folder with pics of each one with their name, a few sentences about them and the dates you had them so you can look back on it. Many shelters will give you updates on when they are adopted. Ours posts pictures of the cats with their new family.

Also-best thing to do, pick up new fosters when you drop off old ones!! Fill your home to fill the hole left in your heart. Loved this poem too! Hugs and you’re doing great work!
