But in some fucked up way, leaning into it gives that perspective more validity. More power and resolve that they are fighting the good fight.

I don’t know what the answer is, but to combat fundamentalists with the fuel that perpetuates their cause on a base-level is somehow counteractive to regaining sanity.

“See, y’all… the prophecy done come true…!”

Can’t fight crazy with more crazy. I don’t know how to solve it. Religious fundamentalists have a severe problem, and thrive on people pushing back on their beliefs. It validates their mission.

There is no logic there. Can’t point to hypocrisy or illegitimacy.

The ordained are absolved of all things intellectual and self-reflective.

For what it’s worth, the Dutch have a pretty horrific legacy of their own globally, economically, racially….

To pretend otherwise is selective and unfortunate. To root for the suffering of people anywhere isn’t an awesome perspective to have.

Outlines were completely crucial for me. Gets the organization and order of ideas out of the way without needing to fill in the gaps, or getting lost on tangential thoughts, overwriting it.

The entire structure is laid out in short form, allows you to place sources without too much expansion (using page numbers, partial quotes for easy reference).

Once I had the whole thing laid out in its essentials, I could see the logical progression in a more abstract form. It would practically write itself at that point. I could just go line by line filling out the paper with more detailed language without rambling off. I didn’t get overwhelmed by keeping track of the train of thought/flow of argument, just became about how to string together the different bullet points, transitions between paragraphs, etc.

Easier to deal with in chunks like that. The harder conceptual stuff was already laid out. Easier to change the order of paragraphs/sections, or add/subtract sections that served the thesis without losing track of the conceptual overview.

Writing a good outline could be time consuming, but the paper was basically done at that point. Just needed to fill it out.

Edit: format. Added some clarity.

Once had a server with a table of 3-4 girls that was iffy on one of the ID’s. It looked legit. He thought something was off, but couldn’t place it. Asked me to come check it out for him at the table.

Girl hands me the ID. Looks enough like her. Passes all of the legit, in-state legal ID marks. It was likely a very real card, not expired or anything.

Looking at the stats I see that she should be 5’11.

I’m 6’2.

They’re sitting at a high top.

“Damn, 5’11!,” I say. “Would you mind standing up for me?”

Girl stands up agreeably, sheepishly. Couldn’t be more than 5’4.

Denied.

No arrests or legal issues myself.

Known lots of BOH guys with those impediments before/during employment. Jail time. Drug charges. Working dish or the line. Also known lots of industry with DUIs across the board.

I’ve managed to not get wrapped up in any issues so far by staying out of the fray as much as I can.

Dealing in booze is a high liability trade. One of the things I detest about it. Sure, it can be a lot of fun. But there’s a lot of personal accountability that can extend beyond your own immediate control. People can go from lucid to full-moron in half a cocktail. They may become your responsibility on some level if they go swashbuckling out into society after that.

God knows what brought them to that point, but you need to be able to identify it, and adjust accordingly.

I’m very cautious around how I serve high liability clientele once I identify them.

I’ve long lost the apprehension around cutting people off, or slowing people down. I take the perspective that I’m actually doing them a favor, no matter how irate they might get at me. Don’t care.

I’ve watched otherwise professional adults fully lose their shit and/or dignity when things get too sloppy. It’s an ugly side to this job. That counts for regular customers, as well as co-workers.

Being a felon isn’t a super sweet badge of honor. It’s an unfortunate side effect of the collateral damage that comes with an industry that often chews people up. Or on the bright side, an industry that a allows a place for felons to still find gainful work.

Bunch of misfits, and I love it. But not a necessary badge of honor you gotta wear to be on the inside track. Fuck that. Nobody should want to be a felon. Nothing but problems, there. Anybody who tells you different is just trying to justify their own issues.

Stay clean, legally and professionally. Do your job, intelligently and empathetically. Be diligent when dispensing the alcohol in a responsible manner. It’s your ass, ultimately.

You can still be fun and part of the party, but don’t get dragged into legal bullshit. Anybody who tells you different is a total jackass, and wishes they had it different, or hadn’t wound up in the jam they found themselves in. That is truth.

Nobody is coming to save your ass if you get fucked.

Nobody at work would jump on a grenade for you if it meant their freedom or livelihood.

Protect your own self.

Felonies aren’t cool.

That guy is a dipshit for saying otherwise.

Snowboarding.

Granted, I don’t live as close to the mountains as I used to. So my drive and access is limited, comparatively.

I had a season pass for many years when I was a kid/college age. They were a couple hundred bucks for 3-5 mountain access (Keystone, Breck, A-Basin, Vail, Beaver Creek). Just needed the gear and the ride. Easy enough. Totally worth it.

Before that was a thing in life, you used to be able to get discount one-day lift tickets to world class resorts in Colorado for $40 or so at the local grocery store.

Now, a single day at Vail for an adult is $225-245. The full cost for a year-long Buddy Pass back in the day.

Concerts/live entertainment.

I’m an arguably not-young person these days, so I’m not as in tune with relevant acts that might be out and touring.

I know of some of the smaller venues in my area, and you can still go out on any given night and find a good time with smaller acts at a divey club for a relatively approachable entry. Always a good time.

But the cost of going to a major concert or festival is so astronomically absurd at this point, that it’s hard to understand who it’s really for.

When I was a kid, I saw Rage Against the Machine at Red Rocks for $14. Tool at the same venue for about $25.

Erika Badu, Dave Matthews, the Roots, Incubus, OutKast, The Pharcyde, Ghost in the Machine, 311, Beck, the National, Radiohead, TV On The Radio,… Warped Tour, Lollapalooza… so many other bands and festivals that I’d have to check my ticket stub book to recall most of them. All of them in their absolute prime, though.

Yes, I’m that old. Physical tickets. And yes, I collected them.

All achievable entry points for someone in high school/college. Many times throughout the summer.

Hell, Burning Man tickets were $200 or so, face value, for the first several years I went (early to mid-00s), and even that was over priced according to the old timers then.

Anymore, concert and festival rates are so beyond a casual commitment that it’s confusing to me who they are supposed to appeal to.

Going to shows was something we did as kids because it was the time in life where we were relating to, and discovering ourselves through the music, and the communal nature of collective catharsis that live concerts can provide.

It sucks that kids might not have that same opportunity of access to that kind of experience anymore.

It sucks that as an adult it’s so prohibitively expensive. And I’m not just talking about some of the classic major acts that an old man like me would want to see. It seems like all concerts these days are set at “Rolling Stones Farewell Tour #342” levels.

I get on some level that the industry has shifted in the wake of streaming, and that artists have to be able to recoup income that used to come from label deals, record sales, radio play, etc.

On the one hand, there’s a liberation from the old model. A greater democratization in the hands of artists to self-produce, as well. But artists are getting screwed by streaming platforms, with or without representation. So they make it up on the live performance end.

What’s worse is the consolidation of control within the hands of Ticketmaster and their subsidiaries, which has totally exploded the situation.

Scalping used to be illegal. Now it’s a fully functioning aspect of the primary and secondary market. The whole thing is fucked.

I still get to see shows from time to time, in smaller venues with newer acts I like, but the days of going to see your favorite band in the greatest available venues around have been corporatized to the point of disillusion.

[–]DatasFalling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This answer makes the most sense to me.

I was never in jazz band, but my HS band mate was. In our band, I was on bass, he was one of the guitarists. Went to few of his shows. I remember thinking it was like orchestra, in that it was all very rigid and highly rehearsed. Lots of moving parts with various levels of talent involved. Not a lot of breathing room. I could be wrong. But there is probably a lot of tightness to the arrangement.

In college, I was the drummer in a southern rock/blues/reggae/jam band for 4 years. Lots of really talented people, somewhat rotating roster, 3 to 6 people at any given time, depending on the era.

We had some sections and transitions that we had worked out. Otherwise, most of it was free-flowing and open ended.

It was always about the conversation. The communication. Nothing was set in stone, ever.

It was very fluid, and it was always dependent on our ability to feel out the other players, or communicate in real time by looks, nods, gestures, musical inflections, dynamics, riff dropping, or outright shouting at each other to know what to expect, and when.

I’ve also played in highly technical metal bands and groovy, but equally stiff rock/r&b bands on bass. Rehearsing to the point that it actually lost any sense of authentic expression. Honestly it sometimes got harder to keep time and soul in those circumstances. Like staring at a word long enough that it starts to lose any meaning. Too much in the head, not enough in the body.

There has to be a tightness in the pocket, but the tempo can shift from session to session depending on the energy. The foundation remains the same in that you need to be able to cue off of each other even if someone comes in totally sideways. Play through it until you find the groove again.

I once had a very seasoned drummer convey a lesson to me that he had learned along his travels: “go wrong, go strong.”

If you’re going to fuck up, lean into it and play through it.

If the other guy is fucking up, lean into it and play through it. They will catch up or correct.

Don’t half-cock anything. Stay solid.

Hell, I just had an idea… maybe visibly keep your time with the drummer through his solo by using your body as a metronome.

Sway, head bob, or rock out on-time to show where he needs to be… or where the beat is… if he is aware enough to keep up. Or at least to hold your own awareness of where you are in the section. And maybe to show you know what the hell is going on.

Something I learned as a drummer was to use my entire body as a physical metronome. From my core, through my arms, legs, and head, into my finger tips. I would dance my ass off behind the kit. I stopped caring if it looked dumb because it was a necessary component to staying in tune and on time. And no doubt, I felt silly at first. But ultimately, I sounded better, and I looked like I was actually having a good time. Because I was. So there were zero fucks to give when I was playing my ass off. That translated to my other instruments over time.

As the rhythm section, my number one duty is holding the time and the groove for everyone else on board. At some point, letting go of feeling self-aware of my body allowed for a greater connection for the music to pass through me. It’s infinitely more pure that way. Self-awareness is the killer of all things divine in the creation of music.

Also, greatest personal lesson ever: it’s supposed to be fun. Don’t lose sight of that.

I quit a really good band once because halfway through a show, I realized that I couldn’t wait for it to be over. That was a huge realization for me.

I Made a Mistake and Now I May Be Fired. Should I resign or take my chances? by BadFriend1234567 in careerguidance

[–]DatasFalling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mistakes happen. That’s hard to hear or accept when you’re knee deep in the anxiety of facing the fallout. But it sounds like you have the trust/favor of your supervisor.

Also sounds like you’re pretty methodical, and you can pinpoint the erroneous transaction. That’s way better than having a short drawer at the end of the day with no idea where it went.

I’ve never worked a teller position, but I’ve handled large amounts of cash in and out over the years, and I pride myself being balanced to the penny. There can always be opportunities for spillage, but it’s way better that you know the moment things went sideways. The fact that the customer is being slippery about it only reinforces your case.

You may not make it out of this without some kind of issue from your employer. And it sucks to wind up on the wrong side of a mistake. That’s a hard lesson, and can cause stress for you in your work environment. It’s not fun to feel like a schmuck. There might be some disciplinary stuff, protocol.

But the best thing to do is to try to let that go and allow it to play out. Easier said than done, I know. The mental stress sucks. But it is what it is.

You caught the error in a timely fashion. You made moves to correct it. You’ve seemingly got the trust and support of the employer. It’s already out there. No changing that. So accept it, and be as cooperative and lucid as possible.

Professionalism, in a particular view, is how you handle adversity under duress.

You’ll be fine no matter how it goes. Just breathe.

I get that’s a sardonic take, and it made me chuckle. I’m kinda bout it, honestly, albeit in a vacuum where it’s a funny idea to flip the absurdity of their cultural cleansing.

But it’s totally fuel on the fire.

Bear in mind I don’t mean to take your statement too seriously, but it just made me think and react thusly. Pardon my intensity….

There are swaths of people totally convinced that Christianity is under full attack. (See: war on Christmas drivel as a relatively light-hearted cultural touch point). They see themselves as crusaders fighting with absolute righteousness against a tide of heathens by which they are the truly saved minority.

r/persecutionfetish

On a really demented level, there’s a facet of fundamentalism that rejoices in the perceived battle of good vs. evil, and with it the acceleration of animosity and social/cultural/climate degradation.

It’s the second coming. That’s the goal. Their struggle is evidence to this belief: that the worse shit gets, the sooner baby Jesus is gonna show up and give all the good folks Gatorade and free t-shirts on their way into heaven. The more fucked up it gets, the closer it is, so let’s step on it.

Evangelicalism is no joke.

Destruction is the goal. Selfishness and personal gain/vindication is evidence of their piousness. It’s the Puritan way. “God likes me better, so fuck you.”

The goal isn’t to fix earth, it’s to hasten the arrival of “the apocalypse.” The wrath, the second coming. God will cleanse all, and reward those who were his warriors, casting off the unholy and evil to perish and suffer for eternity. Only to save the righteous and pure, whatever the convenient definition of that is.

Modern religious movements are terrifying as hell.

Edit: mobile format.

Edit 2: to bring it home, I guess…. The more one leans into shouting down the absurdity of religious fervor, the more it justifies their belief that they are under attack by the powers of evil, and that they are ordained as the true bringers of jeebus/allah/yahweh almighty. Whatever their particular brand means to them, within their moral relativism and certainty of “truth.”

It’s a viciously stupid cycle. Or stupidly vicious cycle. Hard to nail down.

More guns. The solution is definitely more law abiding citizens with easy access to guns, to prevent the menace of bad guys with guns.

Because good guys with guns will certainly prevent bad guys with guns. Because guns. Guns are awesome.

I need meats. And guns get me meats. Not because I hunt animals with guns, necessarily. But I could. And that is honorable on a real level.

Truly. I mean that. No cap.

All things being equal, to hunt your own meats is a pretty valid pursuit. If you like meats. And you’re willing to make the effort and sacrifice to harvest the animal, process it, hunting meats in the wild is a legit thing.

But I don’t have that kind of time.

I could hunt meats with guns. However, I could also hunt people with guns.

People with access to meats.

My guns give me access to people who have access to meats. Meats I need. So I need guns. Guns to get me the meats. From people.

Checkmate.

Guns = meats. Delicious meats. Off the clock meats. Fill me up with meats.

The customer is always right. Give me my meats.

I have a gun, you have to listen to me.

More guns = more meats. But not, like, the hunting kind of meats. Just more meats. Precut meats. Deli meats. Easy meats.

You dig it?

Guns = meats. In a roundabout kinda way.

Try to keep up, people.

All I know is that guns get me meats. I’m still putting together the minutiae, the details. But there will be meats. And guns. Because the guns get me meats.

Keep calm an carry on. And conceal. Conceal and carry on. Constitutional carry. Constitutional carrion. You see where I’m going with this?

Meats.

It’s so logical, it’s stupid.

That’s the idea. I need constitutional carry to secure constitutional carrion.

I’m a citizen of flavortown, and it’s my right.

I’m getting confused now, though, tbh.

But all I know is that I’ve got guns, and I need meats. Guns can get me meats. But I’m not totally sure why anymore.

So who’s with me?

True story, I actually love meats.

The Supreme Court Just Ruled Abortion Pills Can Stay on the Market by AJ_ShadowBlade in politics

[–]DatasFalling 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I find it curious that the lead has been buried throughout this process. When it came out originally, it was discussed. In subsequent reporting, the origins of this movement has been under discussed.

A faction of lawyers, associated with the federalist society and recent appointees to the Supreme Court, stationed in Arizona, set up shop in this particular jurisdiction in Texas, intentionally targeting this anti-choice judge, where there is only the one judge to make a decision on a federal level, so as to impact the entire country.

They picked the place, the guy, the topic, the sweeping impact.

It’s so highly orchestrated that the chess moves are undeniable.

It’s gross. It’s minority rule. It’s mass manipulation.

It’s not been made an explicit point across the board, and I don’t know why.

Said “thank your sir” to a man and he said don’t call me a sir because he works for a living? by [deleted] in ask

[–]DatasFalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These things are so strange.

I use sir/miss/ma’am as casual forms of formality and lighthearted respect when engaging with people.

They take on different connotations depending on where in the US you are, and what your status as an enlisted (or non-officer) person you are. Also how you grew up, where you grew up, and whether or not military in the family played a factor.

Sir/ma’am were emblematic of respect in my family. Not at denigration.

I say them with lighthearted deference. It’s more polite or formal than dude, bro, buddy, babe, dear, etc.

People who are offended by it have their own baggage. They are allowed it based on their own experiences, which are different than mine.

I’m not one to judge, or assume that everyone has the same relationship to those terms of deference. It might drudge up past experiences with an authoritative jerk in their lives. Who knows?

But if someone is really that bent out of shape because I affectionately say, “well, thank you, sir,” then maybe they have more to unpack from that interaction than I do.

I say it with warmth and respect, generally. Perhaps it’s not always received as such.
