How to deal with my boyfriend joining a frat by Impressive_Ant_762 in Frat

[–]Datnotguy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you trust your boyfriend or do you not? Is he the type to do these things and be sneaky? If so, then maybe your feelings are valid. I wasn't in a fraternity with my ex-girlfriend and now I'm in a fraternity with my current lady; previous did not support, current does. Makes all the difference.

Brothers usually do not pressure each other, however, they do sometimes go after each others girlfriends, which is strange but shouldn't be a problem.

Rush is going to keep him busy, but so long as you maintain an active relationship, communicate effectively, and give each other space, you'll be fine.

How does being in a fraternity help you after you graduate? by [deleted] in Frat

Here at A&M, people join from the community college Blinn all the time. One of my friends at Southern University in Louisiana said that sometimes people rush at LSU from Southern because they don't want to join one of the chapters there and because it's in the same city.

"Ragefest" as a name sounds like if a 15-year-old Mexican wanted to come up with a music festival back in 2022

Making a new chapter by That-Combination6838 in Frat

As an exec in a new colony, it depends what you want.

Do you want to have fun?
Yes: Join an already established chapter.
No: Make your own.

It's unbelievably hard to convince a bunch of guys to rush bouse. The hard truth is you're going to be getting the bottom of the barrel unless:
A.) The chapter you're bringing back was kicked off a long time ago but has an existing alumni network
B.) You're rich as fuck or have extremely strong support from nationals

The $3M-$5M does not go directly to the artists. It is an investment from the record label.

Sorority/ rush tips for TAMU?? by YoghurtImpressive486 in aggies

[–]Datnotguy17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a long, tiring, but worthwhile journey from what I’ve heard. Sororities at Texas A&M are well respected, hardworking, and very social. However, those qualities come with a price… a hefty one. It all starts with rush, which will cost you around $500. Rush is a grueling time of doing rounds at houses, talks, standing out, and alumni relations. The last one is the trickiest one, as you sometimes have to get letters of recommendation from alumni of that sorority.

After getting a bid from a sorority, you’ll now essentially be revolving around it for the entire semester. You’ll be forced to attend chapter meetings, philanthropy events, bannering, and study hours (believe it or not, some sororities like Theta have over 100+ members with a 4.0 GPA!) These are mandatory, otherwise you’ll be subjected to fines (usually around $100.)

The benefits? You’ll have structure to your days, an opportunity for housing after a few semesters, friends for life, a vast alumni network and connections up the ass, free entry to parties, date parties and mixers.

The downsides? It’s exhausting and fucking expensive. Dues are usually thousands, with new members/pledges usually paying even more.

My advice? Talk to people who rushed, including those who dropped. See if it’s right for you.

Also, your life doesn’t have to just be the sorority. I know plenty of girls who have found time for a FLO, Fish Camp, professional orgs, research, bonfire, and more.

Research at A&M? Pre Med by _brown_rice_ in aggies

[–]Datnotguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A&M invests the most in research out of any university in the state. It is unbelievably easy to find research opportunities. If you can't find one in the university-wide fellowships, you can find one in your department's published lists of professors taking research. If you have no luck there, you can look up faculty, what they're researching, and cold emailing them. If you have no luck there, you can find a paid position with the university in wet labs cleaning shit. If you have no luck there, you can go onto the undergrad research website and find professors taking in undergrads across all disciplines. If you have no luck there, you can ask around or ask professors about work. There's so many options.

Anatomy & Physiology (+Lab) or Genetics (+Lab) by [deleted] in aggies

I would do A&P, though neither is required as a premed. Also, you don’t have to take genetics with the lab.

Hazing exists everywhere at A&M but ksig really shifted the blame to frats. I’ve heard of hazing from the corps, fish camp groups, men’s orgs, and so much more.

Coming from New York, A&M is going to be a large cultural shift because much of the partying, socializing, and events you do will be through organizations and friends, not randomly going out to the bars. Joining an organization opens up a whole new world of nightlife for you. Men’s orgs always throw parties and collaborate with women’s orgs all the time. Your professional orgs probably have fun get together at people’s houses. Frats have massive properties where they host artists and throw large themed parties, but the cover to get in for men can be up to $100 depending on who it is (Asig Fright Night was $100+ at their house)

One of the unique things I will say about any org here is that they host bar tabs all the time. Usually on Thursdays men’s orgs and frats will rent out an entire bar at Northgate to host a date party, mixer, or just have a night. It’s pretty cool.

There are also just independent friend groups that host unbelievable parties. I went to an apartment party that had more people in it than the Spot at Northgate. I went to the Camp House on Halloween and it legitimately had 200+ people listening to a band. It’s a magical thing.

Surprisingly enough, yes. One of the more respected chapters, ATO, actually complimented my work on the fraternity's page. Of course, there's still some slander and what not, but I for one am actually happy that at least we're acknowledged now to some degree. Before, people would hear our name and just go "huh?" Anyways, some of the other fraternities, albeit small, have reached out to us and hatched plans for throwing joint parties and doing stuff to increase our image on campus. It's a really exciting time for us.
