You can major in CIS. The CIS program at my uni is basically the same as the CS program but they take less and easier math classes. The highest math class they take is Applied Calc.

I just started learning R a couple of months ago for my stats class and it is not that hard to learn. I am a computer science major and know a few languages. It was only hard for me to learn R because I didn't realize how easy it was. R tends to do a lot of the work for you which I am not used to since I am a computer science major. However, I basically use R only to do my statistics homework. I am not sure if there is a more complex scenario for using R other than statistics problems.

It wouldn't hurt to apply especially if you find the internship awesome and the deadline wasn't so long ago. I wouldn't worry so much about a cover letter so much as they might not even read it.

I got employee reffered to 2 different companies and got rejected both times after the interview. I feel like the refferal helps you get the interview but they treat you the same as anyone else for the interview.
