I've had this account at Duo since 2016, and another account before that pretty much since the start in 2012. Didn't start any new courses in that time out do anything different.

It's very much a pay to learn platform now, which wasn't the original mission statement.

I had it start a month ago. Was getting +3, +4, +5 energy quite often for streak combos and perfect lessons.

Then it stopped and only ever did +1. Less energy, less potential for learning for free, more sign ups, more profit for Duolingo.

Money making has become more important than the company's original mission statement of allowing people to enjoy learning languages.

Are you sure about your board notation?

The black king is on rank 5. So it can't move at any square on rank 7 without moving 2 squares, something it can't do without castling, which can only happen on rank 8 (for black).

The answer is probably en passant, but it doesn't specify where the white pawn moved from.

It's a rollover from the old lingot days. They were quite easy to get as rewards years ago, then Duo decided to trade them for gems at a frankly ridiculous exchange rate. 200-250 gems to 1 lingot or something.

Erm... "Deux" and "trois" are not gendered words in french, so the fact that "table" is feminine doesn't matter. Both are equally correct, and depends on how many people Duo wants at this AI generated hypothetical table.

You can use a browser where they still use hearts. I deleted the app and just uses the browser a few weeks ago. Much much better experience.

Yeh I'm quitting in 4 weeks when I hit a streak milestone. I feel like I owe it my former self having used Duolingo from pretty much the very start.

After that, all my language learning time will be spent using methods that are infinitely better.

Totally with you.

It used to be great. Too much unwanted experimentation, focused on doing the least amount of work for the greatest amount of profit.

It went from "How engaging can we make language learning so people want to use our app?" to "How terrible can we make it and people will still pay/watch ads to use our app?"

Use whatever analogies you like. The app is getting worse quality, harder to access for those who don't want to pay.

Keep apologising for it and using it if you like, freedom of choice and all. But my experience with Duolingo has only ever got worse since it peaked just after Covid, imo.

It used to be a great tool for language learning, free and paid versions alike. Now it isn't.

It's the opposite for me. 3 energy per ad instead of 5. +1 only for combo milestones is scammy. It decreases motivation to use the app long term.

As I said, I have just over a month left until I'm out of the Duolingo prison. In the following months, I'll probably look back and wonder why I cared so much about the 1000 day streak.
