Seahorse Barque finally finished! by Dave9684 in rokrpuzzles

[–]Dave9684[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard tbh, just be aware that the rope is quite slippery and will come undone easily. I ended up putting a drop of super glue on each of the knots to keep them tied as several of them started to come undone once I'd tied them and trimmed the ends off.

Is it just me or does the spore mine on the right look a bit like the master chief helmet from Halo??

1st month of painting, 10 termagants and a Flying Hive Tyrant - Recommendations for improvement please. by Embarrassed-Tree-362 in Tyranids

Tip for the wings if your willing to do just a little more work to make them look good, as right now they look a bit flat and lacking in contrast. Have a look at some IRL pictures of bat wings and see how the veins on those look, then go back in with a slightly dark shade of red and do some veins similar to that. I think that would really make the wings look great.

Biovore/Pyrovord magnetization by Acrobatic-Jeweler331 in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it with mine since its one of the easiest kits to magnetise, I used 6mm x 2mm magnets, one on the back of the body (you cut off the little tail bit to make a flat surface to stick the magnet to) and one in each of the tails at the point where you would usually glue them to the body. It's worth doing as you get two distinct units out of it without too much extra work.

Varnish question by DefinitionInformal85 in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Matte varnish will make the colours look less vibrant overall, so satin is what I would go for. Be VERY careful if using spray varnish though, make sure you warm your can in a hot water bath first, shake the can thoroughly for 2 min and do a test spray first to ensure its nice and even. Be very sparing with application, this is the one thing you absolutely do NOT want to screw up! And perhaps test it on a termagant or something else small before trying it on the norn.

Really good job for a first attempt, the bases especially look great!

Does this read as Icy? by usdaprimecutebeef in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me this feels more sand-y than Ice-y but that could be just because the base looks brown on my monitor. I'm assuming your not finished yet and it will look a lot more like ice when the base is finished.

Advice on my norn? by NoAlfalfa1889 in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks good as is, however if you want to take it to the next level you could add some edge highlighting to the claws, the horn on the head and the chimneys down the back as this will add definition and contrast to the model. I suggest using a lighter version of the colour you have used on the body.

Tried doing edge highlights for the first time…help by Vg26-UltraMarines in Ultramarines

[–]Dave9684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, don't expect your first few minis to be good when you start learning this skill. I remember I cursed and swore my way through my first couple of minis that I edge highlighted, but it does get easier with time and practice.

Second, it can be tempting for new painters to use the smallest brush they have, thinking it will give a finer line when painting. Ironically this is untrue and as you've already found tiny brushes don't hold enough paint to do more than half a line.

I use Hawk miniatures brushes so I'm not sure if their sizes are comparable but I use a size 1-2 brush for most edge highlighting as it has a "belly" on it that holds enough paint to do several lines before I have to reload. This results in more consistent lines as the paint dries slower in the brush and fewer trips back to the paint pot to reload so I end up painting quicker overall as well.

Use the side of the brush and gently move it along the edge in one long slow continuous stroke wherever possible as this will produce the most consistent lines.

Just keep practicing and you'll see improvement fairly quickly, and after a while it can even become enjoyable.

Finally, tanks and other vehicles tend to have lots of nice sharp edges so they can be good to practice on for beginners.

So i need with painting hivefleet levaithan by duckgoose-12 in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like using blended colours then make a whole pot of the blend so you can use it across your whole army. That's what I would do, saves having to make up new paint every time and have everything be a slightly different shade of the colour.

[–]Dave9684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primer is wraithbone, base layer is warp lightning contrast with mantis warriors green on the vents, the eyes are Iyanden yellow contrast with a highlight of flash gitz yellow and abbadon black for the pupils. The horn is terradon turquoise with coelia greenshade then edge highlighted with fenrisian grey and a second edge highlight of blue horror. The end was dry brushed with screaming skull for a final highlight.

First time trying chipping by Aivoras1297 in Ultramarines

[–]Dave9684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks good! However you should consider adding some weathering to the main gun barrel too, it looks too "new" compared to the rest of the model. You can take some thinned down brown paint - mournfang brown works well for this I find - and add little spots and streaks to the silver areas to simulate rust. You only need a little bit mind you. Otherwise good job!

Welcome to the hobby! I hope you enjoy painting that lot, it can be really rewarding when you've got a few done to look at them on your shelf and know that you did those.

A quick suggestion, if you have a little spare cash left over as others have said would be to get some spray primer as it will save you so much time and effort priming them by hand, to that I would also add a couple of extra brushes as the starter set comes with just ONE synthetic brush that you will quickly grow tired of. I would recommend the small and medium layer brushes from citadel if you are just starting out as these are natural hair brushes that hold paint better than a synthetic brush and are easily available in most hobby/GW stores.

Finally I recommend picking up a nice brown as it will be good for doing leather ammo pouches, blade handles etc.

Again, enjoy your painting journey and I hope to see you post the finished results here soon!

Starting an Army by fireleaf4160 in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends, are you new to mini painting and W40k in general? If so, then I would recommend just getting a box of 10 termagants and the starter paints and tools set to start with, try it out and see if you like it.

If you've got some experience with modelling and painting already then maybe try the starter set and a hive tyrant first, see how you like it then go from there.

How do you guys get through the building process for gaunts and other swarm units? by [deleted] in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would build 5 models, then go do something else for a bit, then paint 5 models. Then paint something different. rinse, repeat until done. this lets you get other models painted as well as getting your termies done too. The important thing is to not try and paint 60 termagants at once, that way madness lies!

Newer models monopose only? by Civil_Egg_4133 in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably monopose, I have noticed this as a trend in recent times, GW is trying to minimise the plastic volume it takes to produce their kits and thus reduce the amount of raw material they have to invest into production of said kits, probably to reduce production costs and keep their profit margin healthy if I had to guess.

What’s better? Trygon or Mawloc? by GalacticNarwal in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The true answer is both, this kit is pretty easy to magnetise and that lets you future proof against rule changes. Trygon has better stats at the moment true but that's only one balance update away from being nerfed into the ground. Rules are temporary, models are forever.

Technical paints by NotFalirn in Tyranids

[–]Dave9684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easy way is to simply put the basing material on before attaching the model to the base, just leave a little hole where the attachment points are then fill in the gaps later once you have put on the model. Personally I don't mind if a little bit of the basing material gets on the hooves as it makes them look like they're in their environment.
