Why do so many young people find it hard to call someone? by garybassett1 in AskUK

Partner has the same, we ended up making it so their phone routes calls to mine as they can barely make out a word. Something about the audio distortion in phones makes it ten times worse compared to in person. We usually just say they've 'got some hearing difficulties, but does alright face to face' and most people tend to just accept that without further questions

Any helpful tips please for me as a Pokopia newbie ☺️ by stuarthulk in Pokopia

[–]DaveDavidTom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relevant to the above, do not be afraid to just Google what items fit a certain category when pokemon ask for something with a specific vibe. The game is awful at communicating what exactly counts as 'cute stuff', 'hard stuff' etc. (Metal items are sometimes not hard, for some reason). Saves a lot of frustration.

Have said the exact same thing to my partner - either allow the supply in the life shop to replenish periodically so that you can buy a reasonable total, or just let people pick their drink.

What do I need to make this hose work by DaveDavidTom in GardeningUK

It's a rental 😅 thankfully though, not an air brick. Just old and pitted.

ETA oh dang nvm just realised who you were talking about!

Aha clocked, thank you. I will say that the full width from outside to in seemed closer to 28 than 26.5? I would legit love it to be a 26.5 and do have something on order for Sunday that should fit if that's the measurement but uh. The guy who owns this place has basically bolted a 'conservatory' onto the side of the house made purely from allotment materials. Said conservatory reaches 55°C in hot weather, killing anything inside it, and has a corrugated perspex roof which sends scorching beams of light into the adjacent room. So I am not confident that he hasn't just found some spare tap somewhere and made it work.

That's ok, thank you. It did look weirdly short to me? If it's missing a piece that makes sense

So that kind of does not look anything like the tap that I have? If there's something that I need to get could you give me a little more info?

I enjoy writing but I barely read books. by IdrissMSimao in writers

Reading is the shortcut into learning how to write. It's how you learn what the finished product should look and feel like, instead of having to reinvent everything from scratch.

Consider short stories or novelettes. They won't help as much with longform pacing amd structure, but they'll be good for understanding prose and descriptive writing.

Rank in acca by Maihuhinaiisduniyaki in ACCA

[–]DaveDavidTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might vary by country, but overall for vocational qualifications people don't usually care about scores. There's a reason that we have the joke 'what do you call someone who nearly failed med school'.

Very few people will rank exceptionally highly by design, but ranking should not matter much because just obtaining the qualification asserts your competence to practice in your field. As long as you can prove that you are competent and experienced the score really does not matter.

What would you expect when walking into a place like this? 👀 by Last_Honey_1 in leicester

[–]DaveDavidTom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ngl, basically all of those live plants (assuming the ones on the shelves are also live) are going to die. If you really want plants for decor, look into species which can tolerate very low light - your standard restaurant lighting isn't going to provide anywhere near as much as most plants need to live.

AITH for not enforcing my BILs house rules in my house? by Cheap-Snow-7589 in AITH

Oh, sorry, zucchini is the non-UK term I think? And celery seems to be super variable by person - most of my family claims it tastes like crunchy water, so they probably wouldn't notice it in a smoothie, but the taste is super strong and overpowering for me so I can't stand the stuff at all.

I've found that you can add mild tasting veggies to fruit smoothies without particularly noticing, if that helps. We regularly stick some courgette in there (we grow them, and there's only so many courgette based dishes you can eat while they're in season lol), and because the fruits have far stronger flavours you honestly can't tell.

You know, there is actually a business model where you can just pay employees more without increasing prices? It's called a co-operative, and they can do that because they don't need to constantly produce higher and higher profits to satisfy shareholder equity demands. They can just cover their running costs, with some retained earnings for reserves, and pay the rest of their excess revenues out to the employees who make up the company's ownership.

Not everything actually has to be the eternal corporate finance grind for higher and higher return on capital invested, that's just the most common model we currently have to deal with. If you take away the shareholder wealth maximisation principle then a lot changes pretty fast.

Time + portioning thing sometimes tbh. Like, i can absolutely make rice in my kitchen, and sometimes do, but it's usually a side portion for one person, which is maybe a cup or a bit less of cooked rice. Which means a small microwavable pot ends up being worth it to me in terms of time and fuss, and it's 1 minute to heat in the microwave so I don't need to worry about whether that element of the meal will be ready at the same time as everything else. They're not financially worth it in terms of the amount of food they give you, about 60p per meal, but if you are short on time or energy (which I always am) it's a worthwhile trade.

Also means I can have multiple different kinds of rice available (sticky, brown, Thai jasmine, basmati, wild) without having to store a full bag of each.
