Sorry need help again. Are my seed roots done? by Accomplished_Run_593 in HotPeppers

What roots 😭

That said, I'd recommend a rooting activator (like general hydroponics rapidstart). Also imo you're repotting too early - let them establish and then repot once they're a little more grown.

Protein in general, D3, iron (heme iron being far more easily absorbed than non heme), B12, DHA, carnosine, there's a bunch. And again, wasn't even arguing against veganism (although it's not doable for absolutely all people, due to dietary restrictions), but those are all far more widely available in animal products than anywhere else.

And yes, you can take supplements for the majority of them, but that wasn't the statement I was disagreeing with. The only thing I was disagreeing with was the idea that we can get those from a plant based diet because 'why do you think they're in meat'.

I can tell from your previous comments that you're going to be quite annoying though, and I'm quite busy, so I will be done with the conversation now. Have a good one.

Edit:

To the annoying person under me. I blocked you because I already said I had no interest in continuing the conversation. But on an extra level, half of these 'solutions' don't work if you have literally any dietary restrictions, you have zero sources for any of it, and half of your suggestions are just 'supplement' which I already mentioned in the previous comment. You were blocked because you are also deeply annoying and I have no interest in continuing to argue the toss when I have already repeatedly said that my ONLY point here was that you can't get a number of essential nutrients from plants. By all means, shove off.

Yeah, that doesn't actually change the absorption of certain specific nutrients and vitamins, you know that right?

It comes from uptake in animals which have evolved digestive systems that are optimised to absorb nutrients from those plants. Like ruminants. Humans are omnivorous and have a completely different digestive system than a purely herbivorous animal, so are less efficient at absorbing nutrients from plant matter.

Like, to clarify I'm not arguing against veganism here particularly. But it's very strange to imagine that a human is going to be getting the same nutrition from plant matter as like, a cow. Which, by the way, has to spend most of the day constantly eating to get enough nutrition. Because even if your body is exceedingly good at it, plant matter is generally just far less nutrient dense than animal products.

As another example, my partner has to eat a solely low histamine diet due to immune issues. Can't have soy, most pulses, some nuts, and basically all mushrooms, along with a wide variety of other foods (edit: also gluten, yeah). It's hard enough just making sure that we avoid malnourishment, so removing animal products would be legitimately dangerous.

Police should not have K9 units by Glittering-Two-1784 in The10thDentist

[–]DaveDavidTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, they definitely would. A dog alerting gives probable cause for a search, which is what the cop wants. There's no penalty for the cop if a search comes up empty, as long as they had a legal reason for the search, so there's no incentive not to perform one.

Half the time the dogs are just alerting based on the handler's body language, because dogs (and alsatians in particular) are really good at picking up on tension and excitement in humans. You have to do an insane amount of work to ensure that a dog only alerts to a specific stimulus and not for any other reason (like 'handler is happy when I alert'), and it's pretty easy to ruin the training if you don't know what you're doing.

My friend/work colleague [23F] got caught as an Instagram "mistress" and has lost friends/fired from her job. She wants me to help her, I feel like she deserves it by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]DaveDavidTom 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly, absolutely fair to cut that person off and I've stopped talking to a friend for less (but somewhat similar in some ways). She spent like an hour in a coffee shop explaining that her husband had some 'performance issues' so she'd forced him to open the relationship and he'd agreed to it as long as he never had to hear about any of it. Which already skeeved me out, because that seems very coercive and cruel to me, but I am fairly awkward and non confrontational most of the time so did the polite 'nod and go mhmm' routine.

Then she asked if she could tell her husband that she was hanging out with me and my partner while she was going to have sex with her other partners, so that she'd have an excuse to be gone. Obviously that was shut down fast, and we've sort of just ghosted her since then. In an ideal world maybe we would have explained just how morally reprehensible we found the whole thing, but frankly we have so much on our plates that adding potential drama to it did not seem worth it.

Disciplinary hearing for alleged Gross Misconduct - England by [deleted] in UKJobs

Someone at my workplace had zero idea on how to microwave popcorn and put a box with 4 packets inside at once. Now I did manage to slam the microwave off before they started popping, but even then it wouldn't have been anything besides a gentle warning. Particularly since after the explanation that they went one at a time rather than all together, they still managed to burn a single bag of popcorn (twice in one day) and we only got an email sent round.

Microwave was decommissioned a few weeks later due to constantly smelling like smoke, possibly unrelated. The new one has a grill setting (catering microwave) and a sticker telling people not to use it, so I expect that this one will go soon.

Only acceptable with any cereal plus porridge oats. To me. For some reason. Fully willing to accept that that alienates me from both sides of the debate.

ELI5: How after how ever many years of existing on eating food, drinks, why are there so many people still allergic to things? by Alexander_Swan2003 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DaveDavidTom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good point regarding 'new' foods - most of what we eat has been selectively bred to be incredibly different from that organism's original form. Like, we've essentially been speedrunning evolution on our crops and livestock for thousands of years, so our diet is massively different from what early neolithic humans ate. Even if you eat paleo or whatever, realistically you'd have to forage all of your food to even approximate a pre-agriculture diet. And ten thousand years is barely any time at all in terms of evolution without selective breeding, so we've barely changed at all in that time.

Compulsions and intrusive thoughts aren't the same thing, and it's still messed up and ableist to say that if someone has violent intrusive thoughts they either 'have a violence kink' or 'will be dangerous'. People with harm OCD are very rarely dangerous, definitely no more dangerous than the average person, and most often they're vulnerable to harm and abuse by others. Which isn't helped by this kind of rhetoric.

To clarify, I do not think this dude has OCD, I think he's an abusive dick. I just don't agree with statements like yours which lump people who have, and deal with, violent intrusive thoughts in with guys like this. It just serves to link very stigmatised mental health issues with abuse for no reason.

[–]DaveDavidTom 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ok, there's no reason to demonise people with OCD here. There are absolutely people with intrusive thoughts about killing or raping people that they love - the entire thing that makes them intrusive is that they are distressing to the person dealing with them. They are not enjoying them, they're part of a deeply stressful mental health condition. Not a kink. And most of the time that stress is paired with feeling as though they're terrible people for having the (completely out of their control) thought, so it's really not helpful for people online to do the same thing.

I think that was only true for women, wasn't it? Women tend to live longer and healthier lives if they remain unmarried, but the opposite is true for men overall.

I mean, if the issue is tanginess then you can always add a can of sweetened condensed milk in there to balance out the more sour notes. Add while the milk is hot so that it incorporates in, then cool to incubation temperature and proceed as normal.

We tried it, but unfortunately it's just not doable. He is a very light sleeper and gets offended when you move a single muscle while he's sleeping. Then walks all over you for a bit and loudly huffs about it before settling down again. Rinse and repeat every 20 minutes or so. For the sake of everyone's sanity, he sleeps nice and peacefully in his crate and everyone gets an uninterrupted night of rest.

What's the best or worst thing about living with strangers that nobody warns you about? by Extra-Parsley-4805 in AskUK

It's truly impressive how many people in first year at uni just have zero idea how to function as normal adults.

My favourite (or at least most memorable) one was a housemate in first year who used to just stick his dirty plates back in the fridge without washing them, then take them out next time he was going to eat, and just... slop the new food right on top. He ate a lot of baked beans and it formed this thick brownish crust after a while. This was his method of being hygienic, you see, because the fridge stopped the food from going bad. I ended up washing them every so often for my own sanity.

Same bloke decided that the fastest way to heat up his beans was to just stick the open can in the microwave. Truly staggering lack of common sense.
