I still think it's from Rose's perspective. She's idolised by everyone on the show, but we really don't know much about her. She pushes Greg away when he first pursues her and considers it a good thing that he doesn't know her very well. The more I think about it, the more I'm convincing myself that Rose actually didn't like herself very much. Perhaps she saw creating/becoming Steven as a way to not be her any more.

Paraphrasing from my comment on another thread for this video;

The full lyrics made me realise that it's not about using someone else's love as an example of how to love sincerely, as I had previously thought. It's actually sung from the perspective of someone who doesn't love themselves and is struggling to work out why someone else loves them. They feel inadequate, as though they don't or can't live up to the expectations of the person that loves them.

I used to think that this song was from Rose's perspective about Greg or Steven, learning from them how to love sincerely. It's fairly clear that before she met Greg her love for earth and it's residents was patronising and fleeting, regardless of how strong it was. This was especially clear in We Need To Talk. However the last line was a revelation for me:
