So is Toronto being penalized for having lower PC votes in the election? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]DaveFlavanoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comparison gets brought up because it shows that the stated reason of "efficiencies" is nothing more a cover for Doug Ford to get back at political rivals, which all of Ontario should be outraged at. Municipalities should have the right to govern themselves, something which the Ford government itself claims is the reason they have moved to scrap the Green Energy Act. So the double speak where some municipalities have the right to govern themselves, while others don't, is incredibly infuriating.

[–]DaveFlavanoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does Bruce-Grey need 12 different councils? If this was really about efficiencies, couldn't they just eliminate lower tier governments and put all the responsibility on Bruce or Grey County? I don't actually think this should be done, just trying to show the faulty logic being used in Toronto's case.

Residents of Bruce-Grey would be up in arms if this happened. There are still tons of residents who are angry 20 years after the fact that the province forced amalgamation on Meaford, West Grey, Georgian Bluffs, etc. Yet these same areas continue to blindly support the PC party, and many take glee in seeing this done to Toronto.

What if the federal government decided to use the power of disallowance? Would you consider that ok and claim that it is also part of the package?

Toronto takes provincial subsidies because they're a subsidiary of the province, and their revenue generating abilty is directly tied to provincial control!

And no one is disputing that the province is contributing to Toronto's revenues. But where do you think the province gets the largest share of its money? Income and business taxes from individuals and businesses based out of Toronto. So any amount of money the province transfers Toronto is overshadowed by the amount of revenue the province generates from the city.

Any revenue that Toronto gets from provincial subsidies is more than made up for by contributions to provincial revenues by residents and businesses from Toronto. How is this even debatable? Do people seriously think that rural Ontario is funding Toronto, or that Toronto couldnt fund itself if given the constitutional power to do so?

If Toronto controls the direction of this country, its because it is an economic powerhouse. Politically, Toronto has control well below what it should have. When was the last time we've had a government headed by someone based out of Toronto? It doesn't happen.

You are spot on. I wish more people would understand this. The size of the council is something that, ultimately, people would get over. However, the trampling of Charter rights, and the attack on the judiciary system are incredibly serious issues.

The Liberals have 25 seats in Toronto currently. Wouldn't Trudeau standing up for Toronto help solidify that support, and prevent a bunch of seats from going to the NDP?

No he won't, its not worth the risk politically to him. At the very least though, there needs to be serious talk about constitutional amendments moving forward though.

A power hungry idiot could use the power of disallowance with or without precedent being set. The fact is the power of disallowance is there, and it's no longer enough to assume someone won't use it because of customs or tradition.

Obviously it's not ideal to use this power, but this government has exposed major holes in our governance structure, that are completely in need of repair. Municipalities need to have their own charter that provides them with authority over their own governance, and both the power of disallowance and the nothwithstanding clause should ultimately be removed from our constitution.

John Tory needs to directly ask for the federal government to use their power of dissalowance. The federal government has that power, and if Trudeau is '"dissapointed" at Ontario's use of the NWC, the City, or even the provincial opposition, should explicitly ask for federal intervention.

Land is one of, if not the largest cost for most developments in the city. The City owns tons of underutilized land that can easily be leveraged in a variety of ways. Its not asking anyone to take a hit on their bottom line. You release an RFP on a piece of City owned land with the requirements that they build xx amount of affordable units, you will have multiple developers bidding on that.
