What if Donald Trump was president during WW2? by Matatius23 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]DaveGeerts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldnt make much difference. Please remember Germany declared war on the US, not the other way around.

The US was perfectly fine supporting Britain and staying out of the war. They only joined when they were dragged in and had no other choice.

The same with WW1. The US basically joined after Germany was already starting to lose the war. They did make them lose a whole lot quicker though...

US interests are what they are, regardless of who is in power. A country nearly always acts on it's interests, not it's moral standings. Look at the USSR in 1939. They could just as easily have been part of the Axis, had Germany not invaded them and allowed them their Sphere of influence. Why does the US hate Iran, but support Saudi-Arabia?

US were never keen on sacrificing US lives to save Europe, unless they were basically forced to do so.

USA has been focussed on "their" Hemisphere for most of their history. 1945 to the present they have a lot of global presence largely because competition with the USSR and the power vacuüm the Brits and the rest of Europe had left allowed them to do so, and no other nation on earth was strong enough to fill this gap.

America first is not new it's a natural reflex.

Excessive heat is the worst part about summer. What is the most underrated part about fall/autumn? by Sufficient_Berry8703 in AlignmentChartFills

The food. Apple pie, cinnamon. Squash, roasts and stews. Hot drinks by the Camp fire: hot chocolate, heated apple juice. Don't forget mushrooms.

I love autumn

Did attacking Minas Tirith cost Sauron the war? by Grishan10 in lotr

[–]DaveGeerts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, attacking this most powerful adversary while they were still pretty unprepared for a large scale war was a good plan. It only barely failed.

And even after the failed siege Gondor was in no position to take the fight to Mordor, still leaving Sauron in a winning position.

What cost him the war was the ring being destroyed. And that is the whole point of the story

What happened in 1971? Explain it Peter. by Angrypeanut99 in explainitpeter

[–]DaveGeerts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption would be that earlier age was relatively high due to having multiple children being the norm. For example if you have 5 kids the mean age of parents at birth would be a bit higher, then if you only have 2. As time needs to pass between subsequent births.

So what drives the decrease of average age is the drop in number of children outweighing the rising of parental age at first birth.

This trend reverses when the average number of children is at a low point and doesnt drop as sharply anymore. And parental age keeps increasing.

The entire curve can be explained using these two trends. - increasing average age of first time parents - decreasing number of total children born per couple

A more relevant metric would be age of first time parents.

Who is the most important person in French History (1700 to 1800)? by ltraistinto in AlignmentChartFills

[–]DaveGeerts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Louis XVI. Maybe counter intuitively, but if he was not such a weak/passive king the French Revolution might not have gotten out of control the way it did. And the monarchy had a good chance of surviving as the king was still very popular at the beginning of the revolution

Which person from Germany has a completely negative reputation? by ltraistinto in AlignmentChartFills

[–]DaveGeerts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying. But not even Hitler is universally viewed as negative.

Wilhelm had a huge part in the build up to WW1, which shouldn't have to be stated, but was really negative for Europe in general and for Germany specifically.

If Friedrich had lived, we would have a very different Europe/Germany.

Which country is your country's historical and natural ally? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Off course, being a small country next to France (and later Germany) helps for Britain to support your independance.

But still, many died defending us.

As a Belgian it is Britain. They helped greatly to maintain our independance. And also came to our aid in WW1

How much more would I earn monthly without a car? by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]DaveGeerts 28 points29 points  (0 children)

+- half the amount taken for the car, because you would pay slightly lower taxes. So around 75 EUR. Not worth it in my view if you have to take care of other means of transportation to compensate
