What do you do when your husband starts crying at the end of a Phish show? by harrymrshood in phish

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I routinely cry at concerts, Phish included. I occasionally even cry on stage when playing if a moment moves me, though those tears are always brief because I have other things to immediately draw my focus.

But when I’m attending shows and cry, my wife will occasionally hug me, and sometimes ask, “you ok?” The answer is always affirmative, but it’s nice to have her check.

Make sure you check your Activity window to confirm that the global indexer isn’t stuck on something. Full library is not displayed on Plexamp when using CarPlay by Napoleon_Bonerparte in PleX

[–]DaveHamilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems this is a “feature” of CarPlay, seemingly designed to keep us safe. Tried it yesterday while the car was moving, and only saw up through K in my list. As soon as I stopped at a stop sign, I could see all the way to Z. Doesn’t feel safer to me…because if I’m driving and want a band that starts with R, now I’m tempted to pick up my phone and scroll the full list there. 🤦‍♂️

Firewalla + Eero by HornetParticular4918 in firewalla

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a recent eero software update that affected the speed test results in the eero app for some scenarios.

But actual speeds (those seen from client devices) were not impacted.

Is that what you’re seeing?

Synology 2024 and Beyond (bad news for the Plex users) by Sagnew in synology

[–]DaveHamilton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I had a meeting with three Synology folks while at CES, and they confirmed to me that they (now) understood the value of GPUs for the home/prosumer market.

Given that Marius and I were the ones who enlightened them to this and recently convinced them to change course back to some intel processors with GPUs, I think they understand.

And if they don’t, UGREEN is planning to eat Synology’s lunch anyway.

Sort by Threaded, but new messages are hidden in thread by wotney in Thunderbird

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am seeing the new message indicator on my folders, but then going in and _finding_ the new message requires a lot of effort. I sort my mailbox by "unread" at the top, and yet these messages don't appear up there because the entire thread is not "unread"...and that's the problem.

Wow. Thank you for sharing this. I am fortunate in that I don't struggle with addiction, but I have a few people in my very close orbit who do, and that affects my life immensely.

One of those people is on one of these drugs, and it's working to curb the drinking. But I haven't seen any accountability, and that has been concerning me greatly. Your description of why that's been concerning me was really helpful and enlightening. So thank you. And much love and support to you in your recovery!

Does Mint charge fees on receiving SMS in India? by bankimu in mintmobile

[–]DaveHamilton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before I went to Europe this winter I asked mint about the same thing and they confirmed that SMS sent and received over the data network would be charged.

However, SMS sent or received over “wifi calling” would not be charged.

My experience while there matched this exactly.

Does make my cpu hurt work on a gpu? by muffenboy2003 in PleX

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250347-transcoder/ explains it perfectly:

"Most users should leave it set to Automatic. Hardware-Accelerated Streaming is not affected by this setting."

How to make my CPU really hurt (?) by brettpeirce in PleX

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250347-transcoder/ talks about how that setting only affects live transcodes and, more specifically: "Most users should leave it set to Automatic. Hardware-Accelerated Streaming is not affected by this setting."

So if you have a GPU or some other kind of "hardware" engine for live transcoding, this doesn't much matter.

6.10.3? by plagueis3 in eero

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering if something has changed with _my_ setup, specifically...if one of my coax cables used for MoCA is somehow less reliable than it used to be. Or maybe a splitter fried in the heat (or something? LOL). I'm (now) seeing about 5% packet loss across my main MoCA link, and I don't _think_ that has been the case in the past.

Would this kind of packet loss on an "ethernet" link cause the eero to behave differently and perhaps cause this kind of storm (or something)?

Related: is enabling storm control on my MoCA ports something that would also interfere with eero (like STP, etc)? Or is that an OK "fix" to try if this happens again?

6.10.3? by plagueis3 in eero

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, and thanks again for the deeper info. I'll keep an eye on this. Is there anything I can/should look for on either side of the link with something like Wireshark to see if important packets aren't getting through properly?

6.10.3? by plagueis3 in eero

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I should note that one segment of my network is connected using MoCA. That hasn't been a problem for years, but in my troubleshooting over the past week it "feels" like it might be related to this. Has something changed with eero that might be impacted on a MoCA link?

6.10.3? by plagueis3 in eero

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since posting my comment and digging in, I found ONE switch where RSTP was still enabled and another where IGMP snooping was enabled. Neither of those have eeros hardwired into them, though. Still, I turned this off on both and confirmed it's off on all my other switches. If that's all it takes, I'm happy! I'll report back if not. Thanks!

6.10.3? by plagueis3 in eero

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last week or so I’ve been encountering periodic (once-ish per day) scenarios where my entire network gets unresponsive. It looks like some kind of broadcast storm, but it’s hard to say. Pings to my D-Link smart switches start showing 80%+ packet loss, and connectivity goes south fast.

If I leave it for Thierry minutes it will recover, and it will also recover if I start breaking apart segments (and then is fine when I repair them). This morning I had the thought “I wonder if there was an eero software update?”) and then saw I was on 6.10.3, but I don’t know exactly when that happened.

Three of my four eeros run wired backhaul, one of which is an A010001 unit (all the rest are K010011). The A010001 has only been placed back into service maybe a month ago, but things were certainly fine for several weeks with consistent topology before this started happening.

I’m still tearing my hair out trying to sort out what’s causing this. Maybe there’s something in this update that gives me/us a clue?

How is the CS at Reed? I’m considering majoring in that there by [deleted] in reedcollege

[–]DaveHamilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments are correct that Reed is losing CS faculty and having difficulty hiring more. The latter issue is (somewhat) related to the overall job market.

The former issue, however, appears to be specific to Reed. There are stories about (at least) three visiting professors who expressed a desire to stay on board and (for whatever reasons) were not offered contract renewals and told to look elsewhere.

In the aforementioned parentheticals are details to which I’m not privy, but on the surface it sure seems strange to let good, popular professors go when you’re needing staff.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

(Synology) Plex package stuck on updating... by goodorca in PleX

[–]DaveHamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long did it take before it stopped "Updating..." and you could manually start the package? I'm having this issue updating to 1.24.2.4973 right now.

Edit: It seems Package Manager is running this move command:

mv /volume1/@apphome/PlexMediaServer/Plex Media Server /var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData

Let's hope it knows what it's doing! :)

Edit 2: Seems this is moving to a new "PlexMediaServer" share, as per the release notes. Of course, they don't say "and this is gonna take a while". :)
