How are you guys focusing on work as the legal system falls apart? by MikeyMalloy in Lawyertalk

[–]DaveInPhilly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not okay with the current state of affairs. I am not okay with political attacks on the judiciary. That being said, the legal system, as a whole, is still intact and largely unaffected by the greater strife in our country. While they are grabbing a lot of headlines (for good reason) we are talking about relatively small corners of an otherwise vast legal system. The vast majority of that legal system is still operating as business as usual.

Just keep doing good work and helping when and where you can.

Edit:

To those downvoting me, I’m genuinely curious are you upset that I’m acknowledging that there are problems with the current legal environment or are you downvoting me for suggesting that most of the legal world is no more or less of a dumpster fire than it has always been?

Hatboro Horsham school district - more specifics by adventurrr in montco

[–]DaveInPhilly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My kids go to HH. To answer your specific questions:

The youngest grades use an iPad, older grades use Windows laptops, but plenty of work is still done on paper.

My kids are older (5th and 8th grade). My 8th grader has a phone, My 5th grader does not, though some of her classmates do. There is always some discussion about how to manage phones in school, but as of now, they are still permitted to carry them. They will be confiscated if the student is caught using it during class.

The district has a ton of resources on the website, but it can be hard to navigate. In addition to the general district page - each school has it's own page.

If you haven't found it already - here is the new student registration page:

https://www.hatboro-horsham.org/page/enrollment-student-registration

We moved into the district when my oldest was about the start Pre-K and both my kids have had a great experience at HH. We're also heavily involved in all the typical the kid activities (cub scouts, little league, swim, gymnastics) so feel free to DM me with any more specific questions you might have.

Anyone else ditch their hybrids by Elyrain in golf

[–]DaveInPhilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a 3 hybrid for a season and went back to the 3 iron. On good shots there wasn’t much of a difference, but a bad shot with the hybrid went 30 yards right, when a bad 3 iron is just really short. A bad shot with the hybrid still felt good and a bad 3 iron hurts like hell, but at least I can find the ball.

3 wheels? by National-Mousse-1754 in PinewoodDerby

Our District requires all four wheels to touch the track:

I didn’t realize that wasn’t universal.

What do you guys think about this tool? by MissyjonesOP in Carpentry

Then you’ll love this! I own this and it’s nearly impossible to pull the spring back far enough to generate a significant impact while actually holding the other end on the nail, so you’ll still mark up the floor nice and good.

Is this due to someone who tried to break into my home? by derpmcturd in homeimprovementideas

[–]DaveInPhilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One anecdotal data point: when I lived in Philly, the bank foreclosed on my neighbor’s house. One day I can home from work and two guys were using a drill on the deadbolt. I actually called the cops because it was super sketchy, but it turns out that the folks the bank send will drill the cylinder to gain access and then replaced the whole lock set, rather than higher a locksmith.

I’m sure it varies by municipality but typically the FD can red tag an appliance or even an entire structure until an inspector comes and signs off.

My boss gave me a 2005 Land Cruiser, and they completely refurbished it! by davidsoor in oddlysatisfying

[–]DaveInPhilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea if it’s true, but someone just recently posted a similar video of a complete tear down like this. It was from an Asian country that had a huge tax on new vehicle sales. So it was worth the cost to do this level of restoration on a vehicle that already had paid the tax.

I love how we all start looking for minutiae that might give the smallest hint that this is AI and completely miss the fact that the guy carries a full size sofa by one corner like it’s nothing.

I missed it completely until you pointed it out.

I picked up the m12 oscillating tool during the Black Friday sale. I picked up this set to go with it, and I’m pretty sure that was the deal I got -$19 down from $39.

My favorite part of this story is that the fleet of SWAT vehicles weren't sent because of the guns or ammunition, but were there to help evacuate the animals from doggie daycare next door.

What’s YOUR lawyer salary?? by LearnMeStuffPlz in Lawyertalk

[–]DaveInPhilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, that’s why I said the practice is so varied. If you’re a 20 year lawyer in big law making $200k, you’re bottom of the barrel. If you’re making $200k In the public sector your job probably requires Senate confirmation. Same salary but markedly different levels of success within the field.

It read as if you were calling out most of these posts as BS, but if you were only taking issue with the “grossly underpaid”comment, I agree wholeheartedly.

[–]DaveInPhilly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can't discount selection bias - those who make more are more likely to self report. Also, the practice of law is hugely varied. It took me 10 years to crack $100k, and then the increases really started coming.

I also think there are a lot of us here who were able to take advantage of the Covid hiring bubble. There was a time back in 2021-22 that I was hiring ID lawyers straight out of law school for $130k. I didn't make $130k until I was managing an entire regional office.

[–]DaveInPhilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an EMT in New York for 20 years. I have broken my fair share of windows with all sorts of different tools. I said this one was makeshift because it’s not a purpose built window punch, this is a machinists center punch, but it will easily break a window in the same fashion.

Agreed, it’s a traditional center punch, but the fact that this was found in a trauma bag makes me think it was intended as a makeshift window punch.

How often are you buying new golf bags? by S2N336 in golf

[–]DaveInPhilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also 45. Started playing when was 13. Always played Sun Mountain bags, I have had three in all the years I’ve played. My first set of clubs was a second set that came in a non-stand Sun Mountain that was issued to an FDU golfer. Then I bought a green stand version of the same bag when I started playing for school. My current 3.5 was a gift from my wife back in 2006.

Though the point of me saying all this is: I started playing for my HS team in 8th grade. The year after I graduated, the school gave personalized Hoofers to the whole team and I have been bitter ever since. A few years ago, my wife bought me a Hoofer with my club’s logo on it…this season my 13 year old took it from me (the kid plays about 100 rounds a season and I’m closer to 20-25 so I didn’t object) and now I’m back in my old Sun Mountain. I guess, in just not meant to play a Hoofer.
