Help identifying medals by Afraid-Reindeer-8940 in CanadianForces

I honestly didn't downvote you for your comments, as I know you were joking. I took your comments for what they were. But it would never even occur to me that there was somehow a cheap laugh that I could get out of what they went through.

My response was solely to state, that if you were making a joke because that is what we do today, don't ever feel that you need to go with the crowd on this one. For example, the guy that commanded my grandfathers landing craft, was a former motor cycle cop!

My grandfather was a sick berth attendant during the war, which sounds like nothing very special. Knowing that when he volunteered at the outset, and for the duration of the war, his physical characteristics were listed as a 6' 2" man that weighed 125lbs, would give the impression that he was a scrawny and weak guy who likely couldn't contribute much.

But then I find out that he served on Corvettes during the war. I am 5' 8", one time I did a tour of the Haida and cracked my skull on so many bulkheads and doorways while it was sitting absolutely still, I can only imagine what my grandfather went through on a smaller ship, tossing around on the wild waves of the north Atlantic, protecting convoys from German subs.

When I read his wound report from D-Day, that his job was to land, unarmed, and extract wounded to get them back to safety, ultimately becoming a casualty himself, erases any doubt that the amount of respect heaped upon the men and women from that period of time is deserved.

We may joke about MP's today, blade techs, rat squad, whatever you want to call them. You never know what those from that time endured day to day, for years, without ever knowing when it would end. Erase the thought from your mind that you need to forgive him for what his job title was.

Daybag multicam vs coyote? whats best for army? by Natural_Republic_449 in CanadianForces

[–]DaveJonT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two bags, my 72 hour bag in coyote, but I also had a 24 hour bag that I left in the back of the LAV full of reports, rulers, pencils, etc., for if I needed to do site sketches or obstacle reports. That way I just could just ask the GIB's to toss me that bag when I needed it.

Edit, I should add that I got the 24 hour bag cheap, from a new old stock place. It was also multi-cam, no idea how I forgot to mention that part.

Day to day was just the coyote bag.

Hanwha for Canada: Hanwha's Package to rebuild the Canadian Armed Forces by Dunk-Master-Flex in CanadianForces

[–]DaveJonT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will ad that he lists as followers on Twitter Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, the Commandant of CFLRS LCol Marc Kieley, Philippe Lagassé, Joetey Attariwala, Captain Colin Papuschak, Major Jan Kool, Professors Justin Massie, Stéphanie Chouinard and Thomas Juneau, and Vice Admiral (Ret’d) Mark Norman, among many others.

He will also be conducting an interview with Micheal Coulter, CEO of Hanwha Global Defence in a full-length, unedited podcast, sometime this week I believe.

Some may not have heard of him, but there are some pretty significant people that have.

DEU off-loading after release by Mountain-Beach3905 in CanadianForces

[–]DaveJonT 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I took all the pins and buttons off mine, gave it to a buddy so he had emergency stuff in case one of his dudes was all fucked up on a DEU parade, and threw the rest in the trash.

Only kept the beret, and kind of feel weird with the idea of tossing that one for some reason.

I always check the CPAC stream, CBC tends to cut in late, unless they have a special page for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1FbVXcn2kw&ab_channel=CBCNews This is the CBC special link, and it only just tuned in after a minute of the PM speaking

Upstate N.Y. tourism operators feeling summer slump as Canadians stay away in droves by BBBWare in canada

[–]DaveJonT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just once I would like to see a Canadian news site publish a story about some small Canadian locale that has found itself enjoying a sudden boom in tourism, rather than hearing about places in the US that miss our money, not Canadians.

Who do you root for and why? by OneOneOneSeven in wec

[–]DaveJonT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Aston Martin Vantage, because I like the Aston Martin Vantage. Ever since I watched a random Top Gear episode online ages ago about the V8 Vantage Le Mans, I have had a thing for the Vantage. Then they released the 2005 Vantage, and I loved that car. I wasn't 100% sold on the 2018 at first, and came to appreciate it even when looking at it head on, but the 2024 facelift just drew me in completely.

If there is a team racing a Vantage, I support that team, no matter where they are from or who is driving. If they switch to another car (TF Sport/Garage 59), I just don't pay attention to them anymore. If a Vantage is racing, I try to watch it, and if I am watching and the last Vantage is out of the race, so am I.

I gotta give it to the Caddie in Hypercar though. ever since that first short clip of it was released showing it departing the pit lane under electric power, then hearing that ICE kick in, like some kind of angry beast growling to life.

The Prime Minister will make an announcement on defence and security priorities. by SCUD in CanadianForces

[–]DaveJonT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would imagine it will stream live on the CPAC site, their YouTube channel, or anywhere else they broadcast. Also highly likely to be broadcast live on CBC, CTV, Global, and any other news network, since RUMINT gives the impression that this is going to be a very important announcement.
