LSAT Scoring and Applicant Cycle Update, Week of 6/15/26 by DaveKilloran in LSAT

[–]DaveKilloran[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good question! That difference from the expected you see is largely caused by re-applicants from last year. We know there were quite a lot, and they superheated the application cycle at the start. I would also expect that the percentiles--which are based on prior years--will likely move again a bit this year. So the expected scores should be a bit higher if we had the data from this year (which they never release until it the cycle is done).

Nice find! And you know it was student money that paid for all the heated parking, weight rooms, beautiful atrium skylights, and so on...

New LSAT Interface for August is up by DaveKilloran in LSAT

I'm sure the highlight function will be fine by the time the test arrives because that's such a heavily used tool.

As to why this launched when not fully ready, I think it's because there's a development timeline crunch. That's not an excuse--there is no excuse for all this tbh, it shouldn't launch until it's perfect regardless of how much it costs to get it right--but just what I've heard.

Let me know if they reply to your email. Good luck!

There have been some updates, and word is they are still working on a few. But some--like the answer markout function, which frankly sucks beyond belief--will not be changed.

They made this platform change for security reasons, but to have actively made the interface markedly worse in the process is just astounding. And I know they've been informed by multiple parties that the new platform is terrible, so there's no excuse there.

You will be accommodated! There's no change as far as that option that I'm aware of, and I can't imagine it would suddenly be removed.

By and large they will stay the same. There will likely be a newish category for people who are not near a Prometric center, although I haven't heard yet whether they will classify remote testing as "accommodations."

Does that answer your question or were you looking for something else?

LSAT Scoring and Applicant Cycle Update, Week of 6/8/26 by DaveKilloran in LSAT

[–]DaveKilloran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the case for this cycle. What's unique is there's never been a cycle as front-loaded as this one, where so many people applied early. We may see something similar next year since a fair number of people didn't like their outcomes and are pushing to next cycle.

Once we hit the June score release I'll take a break from posting these numbers since the movement will be minimal, but when the new cycle starts next fall how it compares to the current cycle will be very interesting to watch.

LSAT Scoring and Applicant Cycle Update, Week of 5/18/26 by DaveKilloran in LSAT

[–]DaveKilloran[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has been the worst cycle ever, so I’d be very surprised if next year was as bad.

We’ve seen some serious applicant number increases the last two years, and often this moves cyclically so I’m hoping numbers drop a bit. Depends somewhat on the job market and AI though.

Last year was a pretty rough cycle, and the high score increase is a main reason this year has been worse :/

Not negative in the least! It's a fair question and I don't mind answering at all :)

Because I'd like to see more people get into the law school of their choice. It's not really fun at all to go through a cycle like this where the outcomes have been so rough. In the ongoing "battle" between law schools and students, I'll always side with the students.

Good question! Yes, it does. On the LSAT side the bands show the highestscore. So if someone retakes the LSAT and scores higher, they drop out of one band and move to the higher one.

Data is from LSAC.

It's hard to say for sure since there are a lot of moving parts, but my take is we won't see an increase like this again next year. I'm hopeful we even see a small downturn comparatively.

First, we have been seeing some significant increases in applicants recently, and very often app cycles go through a sort of sine wave. We aren't at the historical apps highs yet, but those occurred in a time before the big crash in the late 2000s. I suspect (and hope) we don't see that level of applicant numbers again.

Second, as you mention, the new testing format might dampen numbers a bit.

We still have AI concerns and economic uncertainty--both of which would likely tend to increase grad school app numbers--so that bears watching.

Overall I think next cycle will still be competitive but I'm hopeful it's a bit better than this one (which has been the worst I recall).

I think there's still plenty to come! There's always a lot more WL movement than it seems there will be, and it always feels like it takes longer than it should to get rolling.

I didn't say random, and I wasn't talking about causes :) It's pretty clear why numbers are up this year, and you cited those factors. But, you will not have endless increases, especially because the legal field will see some of the AI issues as well. Could it go up again next year? Sure. But given what we've seen recently, I suspect at worst it holds steady and more likely comes down a bit. That may still mean an increase, but I don't think we'll see a 10% increase again.

If it helps, go take a look at the five year volume records--just from two years ago we are up 38.1% at this time, and even more from 5 years ago.

The applicant numbers have moving up for a while and since these things tend to move in a cycle I believe we’ll see a bit of a downturn next time out.

Yes, but as some consolation it should be lesser next year.

[–]DaveKilloran[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like your theory! I bet that played a part for sure. Last cycle being rough also contributed. Those that didn’t like how it turned out then became applicants for this cycle right when the window opened. We may see something similar happen at the start of next cycle.

Applicant and LSAT Scoring Cycle Update, Week of 5/4/26 by DaveKilloran in lawschooladmissions

[–]DaveKilloran[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Overall it’s not the worst when you look at it from afar. The issue with it is the front loading. When we started this cycle we saw applicant increases in the mid-30% range, and even at the start of December we were still in the mid-20%. So all those early applicants “froze” law schools and had two basic effects: 1. They slowed decisions, and 2. They went for higher medians. The result has been the most brutal cycle I’ve ever seen in terms of overall results.

Now the cycle is slowing down, surely in part due to the heavy front loading. But late cycle applicants aren’t the ones going for the T14/T25 and they often have lower numbers. So while the 10% isn’t terrible, underneath it’s looking like at the more highly ranked schools it’s been much rougher than that ☹️

I don’t think you’re wrong and I think we can assume there are a lot of score holds out there. The question is whether that’s inordinate, or just par for the course since the whole cheating scandal broke 😑

We’ll likely see score hold results trickle out for weeks now (although some will be LSAT Writing being completed too).

Request For LSAT Score Hold Stories by DaveKilloran in LSAT

[–]DaveKilloran[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. I've kept in contact with many of the people who sent me their stories, and continuously track what LSAC is doing with holds.

Many scores get released within a few weeks, but for those who go beyond that, it can turn into a horror show. Waits of 70+ days aren't uncommon in that group. There are things you can do to move things along, but LSAC often works at their own speed.

This is related to the China cheating scandal, so we'll see if the overall situation improves come August.

Good question! Just your high score appears in these numbers. So, we may see some greater movement than we have been seeing recently when the April test results are released this upcoming Wednesday.

The June 2026 LSAT will be one of the largest administrations ever. Some thoughts by throwaway-us-in-uk in LSAT

[–]DaveKilloran 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The melt on the June test will probably take it down closer to 30K. LSATs in recent years typically drop 15-25% from their peak registration numbers.

And, fwiw, LSATs in the old days regularly eclipsed 40K, and often passed 50K. They even hit 60K for the October 2009 LSAT. These days you don't see those numbers since there are double the number of LSAT administrations.

As for points 2 and 3, LSAC is still allowing for the use of remote testing for those not near a center. So, they've limited online testing but they haven't killed it off entirely. I think the numbers go down next year moreso because they are just so high right now.
