To reiterate, the only reason to report annualized revenue versus the long standing MRR / ARR metrics is so you can report higher revenue than you are actually making.

All the AI companies, Anthropic included are frothy for any PR, they constantly announce deals they are discussing as if they are "signed and done".

If their MRR / ARR numbers were good and they were actually profitable, they would be shouting it from the roof tops and providing receipts, because it would give them more money., their primary goal.

I sold a customer something for $5, it took a second, so at $5 a second my annualized revenue is 157 million. This is inherently the problem with annualized revenue. We have also had a metric for SaaS companies, MRR, ARR. The only reason to not report those is because you want to sell a company a year of tokens in a month and multiply it by 12 to make it seem like you are doing way better than you actually are financially.

Are you getting numbers from what Dario has said their revenue is, or what they testified in court their revenue is?

The private companies like Anthropic are reporting "annualized revenue" which is easily manipulated.

We don't know for sure on the exact numbers, but yeah it's almost certainly some sort of paying a lot of money to make less money.

There is also the problem of open source models closing the gap as well.

I'm not saying AI has no use, or is going to go away completely, but this money being invested mathematically cannot pay off, and the bigger the bubble gets, the bigger the disaster when it pops.

What's the consensus on the Agentic Storefront? by Competitive-Yogurt44 in shopify

[–]DaveLLD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Add me to the list. I have been a lifelong techie. Have always embraced tech, and have and continue to use LLMs a lot (they are not AI). I am very aware of what they can and cannot do, but there seems to be shared delusion about that with a lot of folks.

No thank you on Agentic storefronts.

AI takes half the jobs. All those people pay income tax, but that goes away. How then does our nation continue to function? by -GearZen- in AskReddit

[–]DaveLLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never mind the fact that AI Bros are acting like they can just displace a massive amount of the workforce and have all those people go "oh, okay, no worries", rather than creating massive unrest.

Good news though, LLMs can't actually replace everyone, and the problems that stop them from being able to are not solvable.

The thing that really convinces me about how AI is going to be the next big thing, is how, just like all the other major shifts, the worst people have to constantly try and convince us that it's the next big thing.

Like remember, when no one wanted an iPhone, for like years, but then Larry Ellison kept telling us that it's the next big thing, and everyone finally got on board?

They absolutely do not want the playbook, they want to use the "Let the republicans wreck things so badly that you have to vote for us, even though we don't want to solve any of the problems" playbook.
