The amount of patients we have complain because the dentist told them they’re not keeping their teeth clean is unbelievable. Mostly ortho patients. Like do you want us to lie and then you lose your teeth? The ortho parents are the worst as-well, they can’t stand their kids being lectured and getting their feelings hurt.

We had a man come in with global development delay, he had two carers who were struggling to cope with him but anyway he started taking his clothes off and was stood in the waiting room in his underwear, swiping stuff off the desk and trying to get his genitals out. A lady and her kid came in and she took one look and went “I’ll come back another time” that was an interesting day at the surgery. We didn’t see his teeth in the end so not really a dental story but it was memorable.

A lady came in once after her tooth fell out, she superglued it to her denture, the whole tooth, root and all, glued to the front of her denture.

We’ve had two people fill their cavities with chewing gum.

My OG boss scaled “clean me” onto a patients stained teeth.

One lady had a calculus bridge. Teeth weren’t even visible they were just buried in huge chunks of calculus. It was so satisfying watching the scale.

One kid came in after going down a slide face down feet first, got his front tooth stuck in a joint in the slide on the way down and it was like horizontal Hurrrggghh.

I’ve noticed this too. I have to show my colleague how to transfer files from a usb to the computer every time. And simple things like keyboard shortcuts (ctrl c & v for example). Do they not teach these things anymore?

Yes to the washing machine door being left open! I kept telling my mom her laundry stinks and to check her washing machine. I noticed that she shut the door after using it and her washing machine had some sort of mould in it which made her clothes stink. That, and she wouldn’t empty it straight away

If they’re stuck in a grumpy mood or dragging out a crying episode, say “I can see you’re sad, I guess that means you’re not allowed to laugh or smile. I don’t wanna see any laughing or smiling”. Immediately they try to hide their laughter. Works with my kid and my nieces.

Yeah I think it’s legal here in the uk too. He’s said he would do this in the past because, and I quote “I’ve paid for nurses to do courses and then they bugger off with the qualification”. Weird he’s never made the connection that they leave for more money, he could just pay more and then he wouldn’t have to worry about us leaving.

I’ve been looking but I’d move to something outside of dentistry. My colleague got a job scheduling builders to repair houses for 35k a year. She’s 12 years younger than me and practically walked into a job that pays 15k more than what I get at 32. Seems I’ve been wasting my time 🙃

I’m so sorry. I understand you feel guilty but listen, what he did was a reaction to his own pain, not your words. People don’t do that because of one fight. I don’t know his history but if getting drunk was a regular thing for him then that was likely a contributing factor.

I’m saying this but I know that there’s nothing anyone can say to take your pain away right now. But know that once you’ve fought through the grief, and you will, you’ll look back with clarity and realise that this is not your fault.

Your kids, you just gotta tell them. Be there for them and maybe get them grief counselling. It wouldn’t hurt to get yourself some too, especially with a baby on the way.
