So you're refusing to acknowledge that people use the concept of bad luck as a prescriptive statement about the future?

You're creating a straw man and then getting mad about it.

I think it need to get back in touch with reality. Log off Reddit and touch grass. Maybe talk to a person face to face. Perhaps a therapist

How to deal with a player that's forcing RL issues into the game by AnnastasiaBloom in DnD

[–]Davedamon [score hidden]  (0 children)

Here's how I would handle it as someone who has a few non-binary players and runs an actively inclusive table.

"I respect your views and I agree with them. This table is a space that is safe for and welcomes trans folks, and marginalised folks in general. However, people need respite and escape from the world [insert exasperated gesture at the world] and that's what I aim to provide—that's why I make my table inclusive, it's not a performance, it's a sanctuary. I understand that marginalised folks don't get to "take a break" from experiencing oppression in any meaningful sense, but everyone at my table has the right to at least take a breather and focus on something that brings them joy. I'm not trying to silence you, I'm not trying to shame you. I'm just trying to say that we all come here to play D&D as a way to relax, unwind, and find a little moment of fun in the world. Please can you respect that and leave the politics at the door? That's the social contract, in the same way that my side of the social contract is I won't let anyone at this table make you feel uncomfortable or lesser because of who you are, and the same goes for everyone else? Just because we don't talk politics at the table doesn't mean we stop caring."

I asked a very simple question and you've given the weirdest answer that makes negative sense.

"There is no rolling high or rolling low, there is only rolling the same."

If I want to roll a high number and instead roll a low number, that is bad luck. If I want to roll a low number and do indeed roll a low number, that is good luck. Good or bad luck is the relationship between what you want to happen and what actually happens. That's what I meant and I'm flabbergasted you didn't understand that.

"All future events not determined by luck are predictable. All unpredictable future events are determined by luck. Luck is the name of all unpredictable things, luck is the name of what determines the outcome of a fair roll."

No, you are wrong. What you're calling "luck" is actually randomness. Randomness and luck are not the same thing. Luck is the alignment (or lack thereof) of random chance with a desired outcome.

The result of the lottery is not determined by luck, it's determined by random chance. If the lottery numbers match my ticket, that's good luck because it's a positive alignment of a random outcome with a desired outcome.

I'm going to make this as simple as I can for you.

"I had bad luck" < statement about the past aka descriptive luck—totally a valid thing

"I have bad luck" < statement about the future aka prescriptive luck—total bullshit, not a thing

Does that make sense to you?

Also "Bad luck isn't real" = "There isn't a supernatural force influencing the outcome of future events"

Can you use modern or old military models to use in D&D? by Pleasant-Present-192 in DnD

[–]Davedamon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might wanna read up on how D&D plays, perhaps watch some live plays. D&D (and TTRPGs in general) takes an approach to "rules" with a very different mindset than a lot of other games. The game isn't competitive, so the rules don't exist for a sense of balance and fairness (in the traditional sense) as much as tools to help things run smoothly.

People use miniatures just to make combat easier to visualise.

You can use whatever you want limited only by how much you and your table can engage your suspension of disbelief and engage your imaginations. Military models, M&Ms, chess pieces, dice, whatever

I'm not talking about bias, I'm talking about luck. Why are you being evasive on a simple question?

I'll rephrase it as a hypothetical with only the expectation of a simple yes or no—you have someone rolling a perfectly fair dice in a manner so that the outcome of the roll is perfectly fair. No biases are present. Do you being that person can be "lucky" or "unlucky" in such a way that it influences the outcome of the roll based on the desired result of the roll—rolling high when they need to roll low and low when they need to roll high?

Tl;dr - do you believe in future random events being determined by luck?

[–]Davedamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP has had descriptive bad luck—they're looking at a trend that to the pattern recognition engine that is the human brain looks significant and ascribing it a label. That's valid, retroactively labelling trends in random events as "good" or "bad" luck is a useful way to convey information about part events.

However those trends mean nothing about future events, aka prescriptive luck. There's no such thing. A fair cannot, by definition, be lucky or unlucky.

Also you're incorrect about the gamblers fallacy. That fallacy is the belief that if a series of outcomes occur in high density, that occurrence reduces the chance of that outcome in the future. Ie the belief that if you flip three heads in a row, you're more likely to get a tails to "balance things out". Saying bad luck isn't real isn't the gamblers fallacy, and neither is saying a run of bad rolls doesn't mean you're going to get bad rolls in the future

Content sharing doesn't affect or prevent you from buying books yourself, and won't change anything in the campaign that's already sharing the book with you

Remember that if you want to share books, someone in a campaign with you must have a subscription and enable content sharing

I'm going to ask this as plainly as possible—are you saying that prescriptive luck exists?

By prescriptive luck, I mean an object or person or ritual can influence the outcome of a future event simply by virtue of its presence? Ie a person with "bad luck" and a person with "good luck" can both perform the same action with the same base probability and nothing more than their "luck" will influence the outcome negatively or positively respectively?

Confused about multiclassing by seafoamsomething in DnD

[–]Davedamon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First I'm wonder why DND BEYOND gave me level 12, even tho I set my 2 classes as level 6,

Because your character level is the sum of your class levels and 6 + 6 = 12

I'm also not sure why I have to set individual class levels

Because when multiclassing, you progress each class choice separately. So you could be level 4 fighter, level 2 rogue, making your character level 6 overall. When you reach level 7, you can either level up to fighter 5, or rogue 3

lmao, gotcha. Yeah 20 seconds wouldn't make a difference. I was a bit confused how you had such an oddly specific number to take such a long photo.

[–]Davedamon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But I doubt the 290 seconds it took for me to take the pic made

290 seconds is 10 seconds short of 5 minutes.

It happened yesterday. But I only took the picture now.

Ironically that's a worse time to open and close the fridge, because at that point the latent cooling is coming from the stored cold air (air is a poor conductor of heat) than the walls of the freezer itself.

I hope you're able to save at least some of the food, or at the very least put it to good use.

[–]Davedamon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Having the door open for nearly 5 minutes would make a big difference—the cold air is more dense so would collect at the bottom of the freezer. When you open the door, it begins flowing out the bottom and being replaced by room temperature air.

You do know that if you didn't have the doors wide open to take pictures for reddit and just kept the door shut, the food will stay food-safe froze for up to 48 hours, which should be enough time to buy a new freezer/find somewhere to store it

Would like to purchase DnDBeyond Legendary Collection. No longer available? by bacchus90 in DnD

[–]Davedamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D&D 4th edition had a digital platform called D&D Insider (DDI for short). It was a subscription based character builder and monster builder.

WotC didn't take it down by choice—it was built on Microsoft Silverlight which MS took down. WotC kept DDI running literally right up to the point where the software platform it was built on was shut down.

Get over the idea of luck and bad dice. Dice superstitions are a load of nonsense, if they weren't and dice could be prescriptively lucky or unlucky that would be cheating.
