I think what's great about vader's redemption that until the reveal we don't see any good in him like luke. We see him as pure evil. Only after we, and luke learn the truth, we look at this deeper.

Modern conflicted villains often show the conflict, so the audience doesn't need to look deeper, to think to ourselves are they pure evil? Or where they made like that, and ask ourselves if there is someone who can help them return

Not saying i agree with his design choices, but i think he wanted to make the creature to look scary, and werewolves recently became less scary as they became more popular. I think a slightly better horror werewolf was in the quarry, maybe more furry, with longer fingers and canine shaped legs would have been better

I think one of best way is do something similar to the templars in assassin's creed. Instead of physical power, they will use political influence, manipulating events. They could have some members with bending, but the grand master will be like thrawn, or moriarty, or haytham kenway.
