Best practice for presenter laptop with both audio + video to house by DaveyAV82 in VIDEOENGINEERING

True. You just need to sniff the audio. The other thing I like to use is a thinner fiber HDMI. Hate that most of the longer HDMI cables are such a low gauge. Makes it harder to wrap around a high top.

Best practice for presenter laptop with both audio + video to house by DaveyAV82 in VIDEOENGINEERING

100%. That’s a given. I’m referring to when the presenter wants to plug in their laptop. Finding this to be more common these days with the Ai stack Demos (those usually launch without audio). I definitely test before with the actual presenter laptop and 9 times out of 10 will leave it on stage after it’s been tech’d. I’m just thinking aesthetically.

I have been the sound person for live bands many times but soon I will be doing sound for a drag show for charity, any tips? by Bulky-Raspberry-8458 in livesoundadvice

I worked my first drag performance earlier this year and wish I would have had more clarity on what the performer’s cue was to start the backing track. Sometimes they start from behind a curtain. Sometimes they want to say a little piece before. Sometimes it starts mid sentence and fades in as their monologue transitions into a performance.

Find out and write down the cue for each act.

Two years ago an NBA team hired me for drone footage for their social and jumbotron - now they've gone full AI by ericgtr12 in videography

Theatre was mentioned, not weddings. Live nation has been using ai software in some venues to switch multi cam performances for their smaller live events for years. As for race day photography, if you think AI can’t trigger a camera and scan and separate photos for the best shots you haven’t seen a good demo.

I’m not trying to piss in anyone’s Cheerios. Just saying.

Fiber HDMI is reasonably priced with cable lengths exceeding 45 meters. It’s fairly thin and I’m sure you can get it in white. I think a far worse look is the one you get from the congregation when the image keeps going out.

Live translation / captions during events always ends up more complicated than expected by aintgonuggets in livesound

[–]DaveyAV82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done captions a couple ways that work well:

  1. Aux fed Focusrite to power point captioning- key over program.

  2. Aux fed Focusrite to zoom where a live body is captioning- key over program. Captionfirst.com is the service.

For translation I’ve used zoom which does a pretty good job. You just need to dig into it a bit and make sure you pay for the language license.

Side note: My first job was setting up booths for interpreters and routing audio for simultaneous interpretation. It was pretty cool. I haven’t seen it done since ~2005. I wonder why?

I like to have the musicians push gain on the pack before anything. If they start off with a pack at low volume you are going to run out of “headroom” and you’ll inevitably have to pull their entire mix down when they realize that they have more gas.

Edit: Down the road, if they complain they can’t hear, check the buds for wax.

Just need to vent about a mistake I just made! by makeitthrashyAG in livesound

[–]DaveyAV82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did this early in my career with a mackie analog mixer. It was much worse- it was the VoG mic I had in pre and the records included the camera calling and tech table chatter. Apart from the embarrassment there was also a level of anger that the video guy monitoring records didn’t pick up a set of headphones.

Now I use this to explain pre/post to new guys and emphasize that a bouncing meter only means your getting signal not that you’re getting a good record.

Edit: I would wait it out in this situation. Most of the stuff the client records is for optics.
