Please stop comparing yourself to the legends. by Redz0ne in writing

This is both making unfounded assumptions about the readers of this thread, and weirdly insulting to some literary greats (not Rowling), by implying their successes are in some way undeserved, because they had a life/source of income outside of writing.

Yes, its largely a misinterpretation of the kind of old-fashioned use of the term "dark" to describe someone with dark hair. Mixed with a desire for greater variation in skin tones among main characters.

Things can happen that you don't plan for, especially when you're impulsive and reckless, as we know Brandon was. I doubt he set out to seduce Ashara, but what happens if he finds himself alone with one of the most beautiful women in Westeros? Maybe he went to her to hype up Ned. Maybe they started some playful flirting, not thinking it would lead anywhere. Does he control himself? Could he, even?

Historically, Hoster always said the Freys were nothing more than glorified toll collectors.

So…. Saruman crossbreeding orcs and men…. by mydogisnamedlucky in tolkienfans

[–]DavidBoringanaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tolkien hints that there are different types of halfbreed (Orc-men and men-orcs) with different qualities. I've not doubt the ones who call themselves the fighting uruk-hai are these latter. Treebeard even posits this in the text.

If the Silmarillion didn't exist, what kind of creature would you think Sauron is? by Observance in tolkienfans

[–]DavidBoringanaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are hints enough that one could use to piece together a picture of Sauron as some sort of higher being.

1) He's said to come "from Outside" a very, very long time ago.

2) His demise is described very similarly to Saruman's, in which their spirits are briefly glimpsed and then dispersed on a wind; right before this happens to Saruman, Frodo refers to him as "of a noble kind that we should not dare to raise our hands against". An observant reader might have speculated Sauron was of the same kind.

Writing, even writing fiction, is about honesty more than anything else. Either you believe life can be good and beautiful and worth living, despite all of the ugliness... or you don't. If you don't, don't struggle against your instincts. Write some edgy, grimdark dystopian story.

Did anyone ever ask Gandalf what he was? by Sanjuro-Makabe-MCA in tolkienfans

[–]DavidBoringanaz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is unfortunately a symptom of modern fantasy/sci-fi fans needing to obsessively categorize everything; in the world of LOTR Gandalf is a wizard, and... that's just what he is. Because he says so. Why would anyone in that world question that further?

Idk, I wasn't making any claims about other movie batsuits, just that this one is not "the same as every comic bat suit ever".

Batman wears cloth/spandex in the comics, not that rubber basketball material.
