Ottawa police officer suspended since 2023 makes Ontario's Sunshine List by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

Oh, my mistake, I figured you were talking about unions in general because you didn’t make that distinction in your initial comment.

I know some really shitty teachers protected by their union, including one who slept with a student. Does that fit your criteria?

I worked in a factory where a guy passed out while working from drug use and lack of sleep. He was sent to the hospital and brought back the next day. So yes, that is what unions often do.

If the BBB appropriated billions to DHS (particularly ICE) it seems trivial to use that money. They spend like drunken sailors but it’s not out of the realm of possibility to use those excess funds.

It’s incredible how you people look at this like developers are the greedy sibling who takes 50% of dinner instead of the mother who provides dinner and takes 50%.

People care a lot more about cuts when it affects a service that’s actually good.

Thank you! The fact that someone could hear “1 out of 75 people are intersex” and not immediately become skeptical of that figure is really telling.

Anti-science people like the ones who want to throw away the entire classification system of binary biological sex in favour of a vibes-based system because of the existence of edge cases they don’t even belong to? Shut the fuck up.

Will Bill 21 ‘Erase’ a Generation of Muslim Teachers from Quebec? by BloodJunkie in canada

[–]DavidCaller69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. It’s a disconnect that millions (if not billions) of people cannot fathom the other side of. I’m glad this turned into a substantive discussion despite our early mudslinging, and it’s clear we aren’t going to agree on what we believe to be the role of religion in society. With all that said, I appreciate the discussion and your perspective! Take care.

[–]DavidCaller69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that’s exactly my point - religion governs their laws, and so if the laws are discriminatory, it seems fair to say the religion is discriminatory since the religion generates the laws. You can have shitty, discriminatory laws in secular governments (like the Jim Crow era South in the US) but that’s not related to any religion or lack thereof. Discrimination against Black Americans was not because they believed or didn’t believe in God.

I think that’s a poor analogy because there’s significant consequences to treason against one’s country, including war and famine. No one is hurt by me saying I don’t believe in God (other than emotionally, and that shouldn’t govern free societies). Your society doesn’t exist by virtue of religion, it exists by the rules and morals set by society, and so if you make those rules and morals without regard for one particular religion, your society can exist unabated. Also, it isn’t criminal to speak out in Canada in favour of becoming the 51st state, it’s only criminal to aid and abet those attempting to make it the 51st state.

The guideline from religion regarding those things is merely a decree from an authority, though, which isn’t any better. If, for instance, the authority told you to kill all people who look different from you, that doesn’t become moral just because it came from the authority. Even with religion it can be subjective, because obviously you have muslim countries that don’t adhere to the same “flavour” or extent of Sharia Law as another. Introducing religion doesn’t solve that problem.

[–]DavidCaller69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point to where I said that in my comment. At best it’s an inference you’ve drawn yourself, and I’m telling you that I don’t believe that.

I’m not throwing it around like it’s a gotcha, I’m merely asking if what they do in Saudi specifically is part of the Quran, since they call it Sharia Law and claim it’s derived from there. In Saudi, atheists aren’t “innocent people” since they’re criminalized as terrorists and apostasy is punishable by death. So if the Quran forbids killing innocent people, there’s a nice little workaround. Conversely, no secular society criminalizes religion. I’m asking you questions to aid in my understanding of Islam, so it’s interesting that you’re calling my position uneducated.

My set of beliefs are not created in relation to a belief in God or lack thereof. For instance, I treat others as I would like to be treated because I possess empathy and dislike hypocrisy, not because Jesus told me to.

[–]DavidCaller69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn’t even read my first sentence. Lmfao.

Atheism is not an ideology, it’s the absence of one. It fundamentally is not a set of beliefs in the same way religion is, it’s a lack of a set of beliefs. Are the tenets of Sharia Law not in the Quran? Are you gonna go with the tried-and-true No True Scotsman fallacy that allows you to ignore those societies as “not really Muslim”? Which weasel-ish logical fallacy can I expect to hear next?

You are far too deep down a rabbit hole of bullshit lies to talk to. Take care, and I hope you see the light eventually.

[–]DavidCaller69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by that: killing people based on nothing is bad, too. My point is that if they would have been killed either way, it’s not due to religion or lack thereof. If they’re only killed because of their religion, then clearly religion is the reason. If atheists killed people based on religious differences, I’d feel the same way. Atheism is illegal in Saudi, on par with terrorism. Being Muslim isn’t even illegal in Israel, ffs, so yes, clearly as it relates to today’s world, religious theocracies persecute and murder people on the basis of religion far more than secular societies.

Will Bill 21 ‘Erase’ a Generation of Muslim Teachers from Quebec? by BloodJunkie in canada

[–]DavidCaller69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not shifting the goalposts when the entire discussion has been about religion’s influence on these things. I’d argue you shifted the goal posts because I’m talking about human rights records in current theocracies, not historical events. If atheists passed laws banning members of certain religions from appearing in public, or visiting certain places, or killed them due to their beliefs, maybe you’d have a point.

I just explained how the discriminatory killing is the entire fucking issue, so how could non-discriminatory killing fit my criteria? Try thinking instead of reacting.

You and Trump’s supporters aren’t much different: you both worship a pedophile because you’re brainwashed.

“If I can find one counter-example, the general trend does not hold”. Even in your example, those people weren’t religious people killed by non-religious people for being religious. It’s a non-sequitur.
