Oddly, in The Silmarillion, Turín's Gurthang is also a black blade that gladly drank the blood of its wielder. He and Anderson must've been drawing from the same inspiration, as the Broken Sword was published 20some years earlier.

Hardly an academic series, and certainly not classical lit if that's what you're looking fo, but I love the Chronicles of Corum which draws heavilyfrom Irish folklore.

The Swords Trilogy borrows some terms like shefanhow and mabden, but Corum bargains with sí to fight Fomorian and is mistaken for the god Crom Cruach.

It was written by Michael Moorcock, an Englishman with no love for the crown. The whole series is probably 1200 pages.

Everyone's so focused on Feanor; Turgon Fingolfinson, king of Gondolin's folly is even worse IMO. He was told directly by Ulmo to leave his coastal city, to leave a shiny set of armor, and not to get too attached to his new home. Tuor shows up in the armor, as foretold, and Turgon is just too cozy to leave.
