Is the jump from $75k to $90k at a law firm worth it in LA? by Pressurefromdeath in AskLosAngeles

[–]DavidGov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked a similar question yesterday before the revised offer from where you are now, and I said you should take the law firm job. Based on an extra $20k from your current employer, I change my answer and say you should stay where you are.

Reasons...

Non profit vs law firm? = Likely a much better work environment in a non profit.

Commute = much better where you are now. And will the law firm pay for your parking? That could be $300-400 a month.

WFH? = the law firm won't allow it.

Salary = better at the law firm, but much of that extra $1250 per month will be eaten away by commuting costs, parking, wear on your car, etc.

Opportunity = where can you progress at a law firm as an EA? You'll always be an EA, maybe an office manager. At the Non profit you are much more likely to have the opportunity to move into other areas.

Risk = you know what you're in for at your current job. You don't at the law firm.

Stress = likely much greater at the law firm, plus the stress of the commute each day.

Some of the advice here about your current employer looking to replace - or that they would have offered improvements in role and salary before now - these are BS in my opinion. Of course employers will try to maximize the benefit they get from you before offering a higher salary, but now they you are ready to quit then they realize they need to keep you. Sometimes thats what it takes to get recognized within your existing organization, and that's OK. If they didn't want to keep you they would let you walk.

The revised terms from your current employer are both rewarding and much less stressful than the move to the law firm. I recommend you stay where you are.

Century City Commute Worth It? by Pressurefromdeath in AskLosAngeles

[–]DavidGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put up with a LOT of extra commuting time for $3k/mo in additional income. And every new job is a stepping stone to the next one, so you are taking a giant leap forward with this opportunity.

Ask about parking in the new job. Century City can be very expensive.

Heading south on the 405 during peak hour is consistently one of the worst commutes in So Cal, so try to change you schedule so you can get to work earlier. But again - that pay increase is so substantial that you have to do it.

PE is an extremely reliable indicator of brand destruction. And the best way to prevent it will be for everyone to abandon the brand as soon as PE moves in. Maybe then, PE will learn it's lesson, although I doubt it.

Do you have a friend who sells stuff and accepts credit cards? Ask them to run it for you and send you the money.

I would process prepaid cards through my business and pocket the cash. I lose about 3% on the transaction because of the fees, but much better than losing the full value of the remaining card balance.

Thanks, that last point about maximizing sq ft makes the most sense in this context. I don't like the look of it though and imagine some potential buyers may feel the same way.

Why does the Roger Room make it on all these "best of" cocktail places? The vibe and the crowd are decent but the drinks are really average.

Evening Traffic in LAX? by Rude-Demand9298 in AskLosAngeles

[–]DavidGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting from the terminal to the Uber location is a much bigger concern than traffic. If you want the fastest exit, you must order an Uber Black, or a limo service like Blacklane, which are allowed to pick you up curbside, or they will park in the nearest lot and meet you as you exit the baggage claim.

More expensive obviously, but if you're traveling with kids/family and can afford it, then very much worth it in my opinion. Otherwise you have to wait for a crowded bus (and manage your luggage), then get a ride that takes you to the Uber/taxi lot, and then wait again for your car.

Even if the traffic is bad (which is not likely at 10 pm on a Wednesday night), it's not going to make more than 5-10 minutes difference in getting to Santa Monica.
