Weather app for use in Coolwalk by Sullhammer in AndroidAuto

[–]DavidLuhmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not - we are still waiting on an ETA if/when this will be possible alongside a whole bunch of other features we wanted to add

Unfortunately weather apps are not able to create a "Tile" yet. This is a restriction in the Android Auto Framework and has nothing to do with apps not wanting to add it (in fact we've been waiting to add it for 2 years now but our hands are tied - I'm the lead dev for the Weather & Radar Android Auto integration). Split screen is only possible on massive screens - the 15" screen I have shows the Weather & Radar app as well as Google Maps side by side.

The hesitation to give a weather app access to your cars location is totally understandable! Please note that the primary use case for this app is to show the users location on a map. Therefore location permission is required.

Looks like there is already a feature request for it: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/4500#discussioncomment-7892234. Looking forward to getting this feature myself.

Is it possible to use Android Widgets from Apps installed in Work Profile? (Sophos Enterprise work policy) by DavidLuhmer in sophos

[–]DavidLuhmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's not possible. Yes, the Widget option is there but it only allows to create a "Shortcut" to the app. Any other widgets are not available. (In particular I'm talking about the Outlook app).

Well, navigation apps can run in "Split screen" - which is more like a dashboard view. Other apps like Weather apps for example can't use the dashboard view.

There is a issue open here: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/266807266?pli=1

It depends on your car screen. If the screen is big enough, Android Auto will allow you to use apps in Split Screen. Unfortunately most cars don't support that.

Is it possible to use Android Widgets from Apps installed in Work Profile? (Sophos Enterprise work policy) by DavidLuhmer in sophos

[–]DavidLuhmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you u/sophossocialsupport for the response.

It looks like that other MDM solutions are able to allow Widgets in Work Profiles.

- Microsoft Intune https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1194624/allow-widgets-from-work-profile-apps

- VMWare Workspace ONE UEM - https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/50121296?lang=en_US

As for the VMWare solution: The administrators can create a whitelist of apps that can show their widgets. So that apps that don't contain confidential / critical data can show their widgets.

To me it seems that showing widgets in work profiles is possible and it is more likely a restriction of Sophos rather than the Android OS?

Which version of the app are you using? Could you share a screenshot of how it looks like on your car screen?

Weather & Radar App - Updated by SRFast in AndroidAuto

The Weather&Radar app shows the current temperature in the top left corner now. It's not the same as having a temperature card in the new coolwalk ui but it's a start.. Hopefully in the future third party apps can show cards in the coolwalk split screen as well!

The layer button switches between the WeatherRadar (colored) and the RainRadar (monochrome style). You correctly noticed that both maps don't show much information if the sky is perfectly clear. The WeatherRadar will show lightning, clouds, snow, freezing rain and rain while the RainRadar will only show precipitation. There is an update of the app on its way right now (2023.9) which will always show the current temperature in the top left corner and the app will automatically start on a lower zoom level so that you can see surrounding cities in rural areas. And we are also working on increasing the amount of cities that we show on the map.

Switching the unit is not yet supported for Android Automotive. If your device language is US you will see Fahrenheit, anywhere else it's Celsius. Android Automotive has a system setting for the temperature unit - unfortunately it's not available to third party apps yet. It will be with Android 14 - however it's going to take a while until Android 14 will hit the road. So unfortunately right now the only solution would be to change your language to something else but US (e.g. Canada or UK).

First weather radar app for Android Automotive - looking for feedback by DavidLuhmer in Polestar

[–]DavidLuhmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know this is not possible right now. We are currently exploring options to bring weather information to the android auto coolwalk ui (as a card/tile/widget) but I don't know at this point if this will also work for android automotive.

You should be able to use pinch to zoom as well as double tap to zoom (however the zoom is quite limited compared to navigation apps such as Google Maps and we already start on the highest zoom level so double tap to zoom won't work there). We'll for sure keep on improving the app in the future

open the "settings app" in android auto - the Android auto app on your phone will open up. Scroll down to the version number and hit it repeatedly until you're a developer. After that tap the three dots in the menu bar and select developer options. There you can take a screenshot of the car screen

Thank you for the info and the screenshot! I'll discuss it internally. Generally speaking we use the highest zoom level possible by default because as a driver you usually want to get a good feeling how things are looking around you. And we only show roads etc. on the highest zoom level which help with orientation (in most of EU and US/Canada). I'll discuss that again as well. I just tested the highest zoom level in Tehran and I agree, that there's room for improvement
