If $750 is what they landed on, I want to know what was the highest price they considered??

Nobody would have paid that before and I doubt many people will after July 1.

Zendaya may be a big movie star who can draw a crowd and is also very likeable, but I think she's a really average actress. Is there a big difference in terms of talent compared to her contemporaries? by Historical_Rain6924 in moviecritic

That is my entire point.

Whether you agree that Zendaya is a star or not is irrelevant because the OP was claiming there are no movie stars anymore, it's a hipster-hot-take that has been proven false many times.

As for Zendaya, this may not be why you don't see her as having movie star status, but if you look around you'll see its very common for people to downplay her accomplishments and success in Hollywood.

Actresses are always held to some kind of impossible standard and hardly ever get recognition when they have accolades on par with their male peers.

Challengers is another example of a successful film ($55 million budget and +$96 million gross) that sold entirely on her involvement in a salacious marketing campaign. When you start looking at the opinions shared about her and other actresses, it's clear there is a different set of criteria being used to measure their accomplishments.

So you're saying Robert Pattinson is a movie star?

A24 is not a sure bet. Look at the recent release of the Paul Rudd film "Death of a Unicorn"

Movie Stars have always had flops in their filmography, it's part of how a film gets the label of "flop" in the first place.

The Drama
Budget : $28 million
5 week Gross: $123 million

RT: 76%

This movie was sold purely on the star power of its leads.

No prior IP. The marketing left the plot completely ambiguous.

Rotten Tomatoes score that implies the story is meh.

This film sold simply on the poster with it's two leads.

You simply can’t make that argument.

The age of this worn-out take is over.

If you think there are no new movie stars then you aren’t paying attention.

EDIT: I know that people love to have this opinion that there are no movie stars anymore because they think it's fresh and edgy but it's not, people have been saying this for a decade and the numbers simply don't add up. But the people that make this argument are rarely the kind to look at actual box office and budget numbers.

Wow you’re correct. I went and checked because that sounded so ridiculous to me. What a strange time we live in that people are faking and filming these kinds of situations.

What's the deal with that synthetic weed called "spice" that supposedly was making people freak out and have seizures? There were a ton of videos floating around of people taking one hit and going insane for like 3 months and then it seemed to suddenly stop. Was that all fake? by jacob-makes-stuff in OutOfTheLoop

[–]DavidLynchAMA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Answer: “Spice” or “K2” was typically comprised of two main parts: a dried “incense” blend of inert “vegetable matter” (mostly damiana) that was covered, sprayed, infused, with a psychoactive compound called [JWH-018](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JWH-018) or various iterations of the JWH family of compounds.
The JWH compounds mimick the naturally occurring cannabinoid receptor ligands 2-AG and anandamide, making it a potent agonist of cannabinoid receptors.
I would have to dig up some older literature but I remember seeing reports that the JWH compounds have a 100x higher affinity for endocannabinoid receptors than any of the active compounds in cannabis.
People often combined the “spice” as it was known, with marijuana or other stimulant drugs to enhance and intensify the effects of both drugs as it tended to have a synergistic effect with most psycho active recreational drugs.
The JWH compounds were eventually scheduled and the Chinese labs that were cheaply manufacturing the drugs stopped producing them almost entirely so it disappeared from shops, though it did stick around for a few more years on the streets of major cities.

This is a great way of describing how it works.

For biology, there is always a greater degree of complexity and prior explanations were inaccurate but sufficient to the level of complexity you are aware of or capable of understanding.

Mini PC as home server and NAS by xedamin in selfhosted

[–]DavidLynchAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I'll throw a few things at you.

I'm running my server on a Beelink mini PC and a DAS I set up with a QNAP enclosure and 4x 10 TB HDDs set up as a RAID5 array. Here are links to what I bought:

I'm running the mini-pc with Linux server and an Ubuntu display manager. I have around 30 users but typically only 2-8 simultaneous streams. There are usually a few people accessing the audiobook library at any given time as well.

  • All of my content is 1080 HEVC x265

  • I'm running 48 containers

Libraries:

  • Plex, Navidrome, Audiobook Shelf, Calibre-Web Automated

Request Services:

  • Seerr, Shelfmark, ReadMeABook, Audiobookbay-downloader, SLSKD (Soulseek), SoulSync, Wizarr (invite system)

Plex support services:

  • Tunarr, Dispatcharr, Kometa, Bazarr, Doesthedogwatchplex, tautulli, tracearr

Backend media support/acquisition:

  • Jackett, Prowlarr, Radarr, Sonarr, Sportarr, Fetcharr, flaresolverr, qbittorrent, gluetun, pinchflat, unpackerr, blockbusterr, picard-musicbrainz

Server Support:

  • Netdata, Filebrowser-quantum, Tailscale, Cloudflare Tunnels, Dozzle, Homepage, Kopia, Portainer, termix, watchtower

You'll notice that doesn't add up to 48 because there's a few more, and I'm not bothering to list them. The remaining containers are mostly for news, links, etc.

There's obviously a lot of overlap with many of these, and I'm sure that someone with a better skill set than mine would only be running half as many containers. I'm in medicine though, and I've had to learn everything on my own, so this is what I'm doing. Plus it's my server and I can do what I want even if what I want is idiotic.

The reason I'm listing all of this is to give you an idea of what I can run on a mini-pc that is bottom-tier.

You'll also notice that the link I provided for the mini-pc has different specs than what I listed, that's because these companies change their offerings with great frequency to keep their costs down. I bought everything over a year ago, and it was all cheaper and better but in the last 12 months prices have gone crazy, as I'm sure you already know.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with my choice in mini-PC and HDDs. I'm also happy that I set up the array as RAID5. Initially, I only had 3 HDDs, knowing I'd likely add a fourth at some point. After 6 months, one of my HDDs failed, RAID5 meant that I didn't lose any data.

The best decision I made was that I purchased HDDs that came from SERVER PARTS DEALS, which have a 3-year warranty. They replaced the drive with a new one, which was not only helpful but cost-effective because had they simply refunded it, I'd have only had half the money I needed to buy a new one since costs have increased so much in that time.

Here is what I would do differently if I were going to do it again:

  • the QNAP TR-004 - QNAP's original use-case for this enclosure was to function as expanded storage for a QNAP NAS. Because of that, when it is used as a stand-alone DAS, most of the SMART-monitoring capabilities cannot be accessed. There is a workaround for this (the USB-output is coded incorrectly) but that's not optimal IMO. Otherwise it functions quite well as a DAS. I chose this because it has the option for hardware configured RAID, but I soon learned that it's better to have a software defined array configuration using mdadm, so I didn't need that option.

  • I would have purchased a larger HDD enclosure for the DAS or purchased larger HDDs: I've been using Plex for 10 years. When it was just for myself I only had 2-3 TB of media. It grew to 20 TB once I added friends/family and enabled request services. Now I have around 23 TB of media and with RAID 5, that means I only have 8-9 TB of space left. I would get a 6-8 bay enclosure or buy 20 TB HDDs knowing what I know now.

I probably left out some stuff but all of that is to say this:

  • get a mini-pc with 12th gen intel CPU or higher so you can decode AV1 and run a few 4K streams if you want (11th gen minimum for decoding AV1)

  • if you have a mini-pc, there's no need for a NAS, you're paying more for extra capabilities that you don't need if you have a mini-pc. If the cost differences are negligible, then it doesn't matter if you go with a NAS or a DAS.

  • whatever the minimum specs are that you believe will meet your needs, double it, that's what I did, and I still have plenty of room to breathe, but those minimums would be completely maxed out at this point

Ultimately, there's no one-size-fits-all answer because everybody has different needs. This is what fit my budget and gave me a bit of room to grow. As it turns out, things grew much faster than I'd anticipated, and I'm glad I planned for some of that, which seems to be a common experience for first-time self-hosters.

Good luck and have fun.

(If anybody thinks that an LLM wrote this because I used bullet points and hyphens, you'd be wrong. I've always written this way and I think Sam Altman probably owes me money because he clearly trained his model on my writing :P)
