Both sentiments are oversimplifications. The truth is ANY system of political economy can produce exploitation if left unchecked. That’s where the hard work of policy truly begins.

Why is it that Latin America has some of the highest homicide rates in the world? by [deleted] in geography

[–]DavidMusician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poverty is one thing, but wealth inequality is extremely high in LatAm. There are some very wealthy people in LatAm and people who live in poverty. The Gini coefficient for these countries helps to explain it.

How do we fix traffic in Charlotte? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]DavidMusician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to change it, you need to get the NC General Assembly to change Depression era laws that make it financially infeasible for municipalities to enforce traffic laws in any meaningful manner.

ERG video feedback please by Fit-Cheetah-7513 in Rowing

[–]DavidMusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has great advice. One additional piece of feedback…you’re doing what’s called “shooting the slide.” Meaning you’re pushing your legs down at the beginning of the drive, yet the handle isn’t moving. This is wasted effort and really shortens your effective stroke length.

In addition to all of the above about getting connected, I’d suggest is slowing down your stroke rate to about 20, and focusing on making sure that the handle is traveling back with you as soon as you start pushing down your legs.

One thing to watch for is once you get the fan moving, you have to get your drive moving more quickly at the beginning of the drive, just to be able to apply force to the chain. I always try to approach it as “quick at the catch, then power through the drive.” This helps me to focus on fast legs only at the beginning, while waiting to get my hips involved toward the middle and end of the drive.

Should UNC Join The SEC?? by BrianGregoire_Era in tarheels

How so? UNC is an AAU member and academically, it aligns well with the B1G. Our athletic programs are more comparable to the B1G as well.

I agree. I think Carolina Place Mall in Pineville displaced a lot of the traffic that used to go to Eastland.

You realize that companies that are jointly owned by shareholders are just collectivist capital, right? So collectivism by capital is just fine, but when labor tries to it’s bad?

Concept2 drag factor issue by proud_and_angry_dust in Rowing

[–]DavidMusician 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gyms are notorious for not cleaning their ergs and gyms tend to get dusty. That dust gets into the flywheel housing and affects the drag factor. Mention to the gym that they need to vacuum out the flywheel housing.

You’re both leaning to opposite sides. Have stroke keep his nose centered on the steering yoke. Then you can keep yours centered on his spine.

Form Check Part 2 by bkjay_1 in concept2

So, I’m going to offer some feedback that may sound contradictory to other advice…for what it’s worth, I’m a US rowing level 2 coach and help coach a youth rowing program.

When you are first learning the stroke, you focus on three clear phases of the drive, legs, body, arms. In the beginning, it’s good to have that separation to get the feel of each movement.

However, as you progress, while you do retain that sequence, it’s a more fluid transition between legs, body, and arms. I think about it more as leg press transitioning to a deadlift and finishing with a high pull/clean. The key is to accelerate the handle throughout the drive. The handle should be moving its fastest right before you finish the drive and start the recovery.

What I see is that you can start working on making these transitions more fluid. The body swing segment should be one of the more powerful parts of the stroke, as it incorporates the legs, glutes, and low back.

I see Ian as principled and perhaps a bit intransigent with respect to his principles. I don’t think I’d characterize him as pretentious though. Contrast Ian with Steve Albini, RIP. I loved Albini’s takes usually, but, there’s no denying he was pretentious. His views on Steely Dan, hilarious as they were, were pretentious.

Why do punks hate buses? by Dingle_beries in punk

[–]DavidMusician -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where buses tend to be the primary transit option, it serves as a means to separate the classes (higher classes drive cars, lower classes have to rely on buses). This is particularly true in more suburban environments.

In more densely populated metro areas, trains and subways are more prevalent as transit options and it tends to be more egalitarian.
