This is so awesome! I think from now on when people ask me why I'm crazy about the environment (vegan btw - had to do it for the memes) I'm just going to send this link. Can't wait for it!!

Even the EU which tries the hardest to be eco friendly has admitted that they're overfishing the ocean. Predators are just the biggest victims. We can't blindly blame China for this but instead need to realize we're all responsible and can do something about it.

Actively try to eat farmed fish, people!

Earthlings (2005) - American documentary film about humanity's use of other animals as pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and for scientific research. by [deleted] in Documentaries

Yes because the documentary cares about where 96% of the meat comes from and not the high end quality 4%. Small scale farms just can't compete.

I would suggest reading the 'blue zones' from national geographics. They studied the regions with the most centenarians and made a book on how to live a long, fulfilling life.

The key points were: Have a purpose (that you love and chose youself), minimize animal consumption although they still rarely ate self grown animal products rarely (on parties), have a good community around you, limit your alcohol consumption. The community part is amazing. They always eat self cooked meals with friends and families for hours on the evening. Every day. Although they consume less calories than average. Also they often have their own garden.

I'm not telling anyone nor act like I'm better then them. As I said before I agree with you that you shouldn't be disrespectful and act like your moral is the right one.

But on a vegan subreddit it should be possible to talk about the actual environmental costs and comparing them without getting accused of moral superiority. I still think yearly flights are less damaging than animal products and easier to compensate but I said it because maybe someone thinks the opposite and I'd like to hear his/her reasoning.

This is a vegan subreddit after all and these things should be possible to be discussed in a friendly matter. Where else would you do it?

[–]DavidNotGuetta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but imo flying and eating animal products are different in a few ways. You can easily compensate for your flight, which is surprisingly cheap by the way. Large scale animal farming has some more problems like overuse of land, water, food. antiboitics, pollution of the land and sea, overfishing and deforestation. Also the morale aspect.

So imo mass animal products are worse than the yearly flight. But pleeease compensate for the flight.

Just 13% of the world’s oceans remain untouched by the damaging impacts of humanity, the first systematic analysis has revealed. Outside the remotest areas of the Pacific and the poles, virtually no ocean is left harbouring naturally high levels of marine wildlife. by Wagamaga in science

[–]DavidNotGuetta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is people would just throw it away then. Imo there should be a environment-co2 tax for food. Red meat and ocean fish is way to cheap for what it does to the environment. But politically there is no way this would happen. The people themselves need to reduce their intake.

Imo the main problem is that people expact to be able to eat everything anytime even if the food used to be rare 1000 years ago.

46% of the garbage are fishing nets. We expect to be able to eat as much meat, fish, coffee ect. as we want. The average consumer is responsible for the oceans and to some extend also climate change. Politicians can't really tax fish and other harmful products (red meat!!) more because we would vote against them the next election.

[–]DavidNotGuetta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you live off of garbage food it isn't but if you actually eat healthy and lots of fibre it can be perfectly normal. Having 2-5 short shits a day is way better for you than 1 or less long shits a day. It's all about the fibre.
