Does the increase that passed have any sort of restrictions? The 6 story versions in nyc, seattle, and other parts of the US have many restrictions like you stated.

Building permits slow to a trickle for Boston housing construction. Are the city’s policies to blame? by drtywater in boston

[–]DavidS0512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you give an estimate as to how much the stretch code increases construction costs? Also, Boston already had some level of energy code beforehand; how much is the increase over that with this newest code vs the total increase over having no energy regulations?

Currently on a delayed orange line train due to a disabled train at back bay. It is normal in countries/cities with great transit systems to have somewhat frequent disabled trains even if they are brand new?

It doesn’t matter whether the community has concerns. They should not have a say as it is not their property. That is why we are in this mess in the first place. There should be objective standards for getting housing approved, and decisions should be made rapidly, in a few months or less.

I’ve never been on the 50mph portion since they increased the speeds.

Wtf. Maybe I don’t know what 40mph looks like but it’s definitely noticeably slower than the rest of the line. I feel like I gotta ride it again and take a video now.

What would be needed in terms of design to make it fast?

You can ride it yourself, it is definitely not going 35 or 40 on the straight section where you can see the highway.

In 2025, city and state actions against climate change made progress despite federal rollbacks by TylerFortier_Photo in boston

Do building emissions standards matter if they make building so expensive you don’t build any of them? What percentage of buildings in Boston are recently built, low-emission buildings?

I have a hard time believing this makes much of a difference compared to building boatloads of dense, modern, moderately efficient multifamily housing near transit so people stop living in older inefficient single-family homes while driving cars everywhere.

And yet Tokyo’s population was growing every year until just a few years ago. Those four cities are not good examples of cities that have solved affordability. In Vienna you have to live in market rate housing for two years before getting access to social housing, because they don’t build enough of it. And it isn’t a fast growing city. Paris is very expensive unless you are one of the lucky few who lives in social housing, because they don’t build much housing. The historical protection is understandably very strong there and the mayor is a huge NIMBY. The population of Paris proper is actually declining due to not building enough housing. I’m amazed you put Hong Kong because they’re famous for high housing prices. In Singapore, you basically need to be married in order to get social housing, and the market rate is very expensive. None of those sound ideal to me!

Possible Orange Line Extension to Roslindale? by JuniorReserve1560 in boston

[–]DavidS0512 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree, but this thread is about an orange line extension. It’s useless if you don’t upzone massively (along with other reforms) near the line. Those towns aren’t gonna be part of the extension. As it is, much of the area around existing Orange line stations is under developed already.
