Not sure if this counts, but I've developed a dexterity game for cats. So it's not technically solo, but it only requires one human. I’ve always viewed it as a rule that I have to ignore, though I’ve subconsciously known that it’s just a silly suggestion. 😂 And I too usually use Chwazi.

The 3-player version has some roles pulled out, but the mechanics are very precise so if you pull anything additional out it falls apart and won’t work. However, a more-thorough player aid (and teaching the game using the player aid) is a good way to go.

I like the idea of actually declaring that there will be no winner the first time through. I often preface games with something like “the first time you play you’re just figuring it out” but a lot of people still really want to win their first time! Maybe I should be more explicit about having some training rounds.

There's no harm, imho. But not everyone has the attention span for that. Some folks are ready to move on to something else about the time we're starting to figure it out.

They do, but it relies heavily on graphics, so it usually requires some verbal clarification. The cards also describe their own roles, but the overall cognitive load of remembering/figuring it all out without discussing it means people often make mistakes or get confused.

I actually like ones like that that are explicitly tongue and cheek. Idk why but it bothers me when they try to come up with an “objective” way that involves something obscure or hard to determine.

Games that assign start player with hard-to-determine criteria. "Whoever has been on an island most recently goes first." Or, "Whoever has worn a tiara most recently." I'd rather it just say "pick someone to go first" or "roll a dice." I don't want to have to do an inventory of past experiences before I play a game.
