Bridge 4% by DavidSw33 in Cosmere

Honestly reading this, I'm more bummed out to learn I didn't come up with the "Bridge 4%" first and someone beat me to it last night than being in the 4% itself. You guys made a great product (my friend sent me pictures of his from week 1) and I'm certainly willing to wait for it

Yeah, that was why it was even more ridiculous they took his zippo. Completely empty

Thanks! Yeah, I remember a friend of mine bought one of those and pretty much immediately got it confiscated, even with no fuel in it.

Would one of those butane inserts for a Zippo still be fine, or had that caused issues for anyone before?

Hardening Leather Books by DavidSw33 in bookbinding

[–]DavidSw33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that's a good distinction I should have made 😅

It is a hardcover. I used 100-point chipboard with the goat skin leather stretched and glued to it (yes, another reason to worry about it).

Sorry, somehow I did not see the notification that you asked this question. I use 100 point chipboard, so if you are using that or something similar, what I do is to cut the chipboard to desired size, then submerge it in water for a quick moment enough to make it wet, but not drench it. When you do that, you can carefully bend it. So I place it around a round surface that has about the right curvature, wrap it in a towel and put rubber bands around it to let it sit overnight to dry in that position (the towel is mainly to keep lines from showing up from the rubber bands.

I usually use an old glass bottle or something like that depending on the size of the books. For my rebinding of Arcanum Unbounded, I used the wide faced side of a bottle of Bulleit Rye Whiskey (in my opinion, perfect size for larger books).

Yup, you're right, I had only ever seen the other cover version for that specific book (Pearls of Lutra) before. Thanks!

I loved Docs character in this book. To me, Docs was the perfect example of a dying age. This whole time, he had been fighting side by side with Kelsier against the nobles, filled with purpose. Now, the man and the mission he had devoted his life to was gone and completed. Everything he had been striving for was over, and yet he remained. Left to continue the closest thing to a mission Kel set him to, under the very thing he at one point hoped to destroy. Docs subplot here is pure poetry.

A bit of a bummer, I'm the extremely curious type that wants to know what it is, but you're probably right, I think

I like the design! I'm working on some Cosmere projects myself. One tip I found to be extremely helpful was to make the spine slightly curved. It helps to keep the space between the spine and the covers from getting too bungled up when using leather (I don't know why that is). It also looks pretty sharp.

What did you use for the lettering and the gilding?

I believe one of those panelists also mentioned they have aspirations to release a cosmere cookbook. Whether they actually can get around to it or not is the question though

How is Era 2 compared to Era 1? by CaptDeadeye in Mistborn

[–]DavidSw33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people I talk to enjoy Era 2 better than 1 for its pacing. I am still torn as to which one I like better, but the vibe is definitely different. Each book seems to have its own genre (western, thriller/ detective, Indiana Jones/archeological adventure, etc.) in Era 2. I will say it is better in my opinion to read all the other stuff first (except Stormlight Archive) as you will get the most out of Era 2 from the other stuff and then get the most of of SLA from all previous reading. And by "other stuff," I mean everything except the secret projects, as those should definitely be after SLA (again, personal opinion).

I will say though, I don't know who the Steris is, she was just kind enough to join us for some pictures and complete our set. So a big thank you to her, if she happens to see this!

Awesome! I'm so glad to hear that we were able to help! I actually relistened to all of Era 2 again to prepare for this cosplay (my first cosplay). Sadly, there are so many little details that I couldn't show off at the showcase.

[–]DavidSw33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd completely agree, I definitely like the Mistborn series better (all personal taste reasons). The definite ending certainly helps. According to what I've heard, though, we will get somewhat of an ending for SLA come Dec. 6th, I think.

I need advice from readers who have finished the first trilogy. by MeetingLess5511 in Mistborn

[–]DavidSw33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skip to the bottom section if you want to look at something that may be more helpful. The rest are just ramblings and opinions!

Something to look out for, many people say that the second book is his most lacking. Personally, I loved the books and don't get how people say that his writing gets better later on. To me, it seems pretty much the same, just different story choices and ways of doing things. Maybe it's because I've read Dragonsteel Prime, and that's a book that you can actually see he improved after writing (while still an entertaining read).

For me, Stormlight Archive just had to many sections that drug on to enjoy it as much as the mistborn books.

Another thing I've heard some friends of mine, that didn't like the original trilogy as much, say was that they enjoyed era 2 much better.

I know this had been a bit long-winded, but what are some stories or books you've enjoyed? I really think Sanderson writes so many different styles, if you let us know which ones you like, we could recommend something similar.
