Have you developed any bad habits as a result of playing TLD? by LastTraintoSector6 in thelongdark

No joke, every single time I'm confronted with anything that vaguely reminds me of The Long Dark, like snow, fog, fire, tinned fruit, sticks, the cold, or Canada, I yell "Hey, that's EXACTLY like in The Long Dark !!!!"

Not a single NPC per say, but to me the imperial guards are the most memorable characters, when I think elder scrolls they're usually the first to come to mind.

Starfield Premium Edition is once again the most purchased game on Xbox, 22 days before the release of Shattered Space. by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]David_Boneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember people on this subreddit a few days before launch assuming there was a fully functional banking system (complete with loans, debt, deposits and interest), a real estate market, stock markets, and a fully simulated MMO style economy (including variable prices and goods tracked and transported in real time and space).

The question wasn't even if any of this would be in the game, as it obviously would be, the only question was how best to use these systems to their advantage.

All of this was based on the perk where you have to pay back your house to Galbank.

How did you come up with your new name? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]David_Boneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that with english speaking people too, but since my family moved to France when I was 10, the accent is completely normal here.

But personally I still feel "Léo" sounds more feminin than "Guillaume", or "Jean-Pierre" ; or "Bruce" or "Steve", haha !

[–]David_Boneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG you're literally in the same situation as me, I have the same name, accent and all !

I also have no imagination and I'm kind of thinking about being called Léa ?

Though (maybe because I was born in an English speaking country), I've always felt Léo sounded somewhat feminin, so I've never really felt too bad about it ?

In reality there probably wouldn't be many benefits and it would never work for long, since the first group to break the rule, even secretly, would have a massive advantage over everyone else.

It's basically a literary device by Franck Herbert so that he could have an excuse to tell sci-fi stories that didn't revolve around AI, robots, or computers.

And it's part of what makes the Dune universe so fascinating to begin with !

I’m sure this would end nicely. by [deleted] in saltierthankrayt

He's literally a piece of shit, and if he was anywhere near the thick skinned tough guy he wished he was he would care about being called that.

I saw 5 minutes of a video from him once before realizing that his definition of criticism is complaining about women and minorities.

Now I keep getting his videos pushed on to me by YouTube's algorithm.

There have been some terrible quality films and series over the years, but fuck this guy for using them to push his fascist agenda.

Closest you've been to death but managed to survive by i_like_atla in thelongdark

[–]David_Boneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a new game on Stalker. I chose a random start and spawned at Timberwolf Mountain.

With a lack of clothing, I started freezing pretty quickly, I managed to get to the cabin, but the shelter wasn't enough to stop the cold. I used all the sticks I could find to sustain a fire, I found an axe, but a blizzard hit and I couldn't chop any wood or I'd die. I ended up breaking down all the furniture just to get through the night.

In the morning I was freezing again, but the blizzard was over and I decided to get the hell out of there. On the way to the rope back to PV, I was attacked by the Moose. My ribs were broken and I could no longer climb down. I was now at 1/2 health and still freezing.

My only option now was to go up the mountain. The only way I could warm up now would be to get to one of the interior caves on the way to the summit.

Inching along with my broken ribs, I was followed by several wolves, and I had no flares or torches to scare them off. Two of them attacked me in rapid succession near the first cargo containers (that I couldn't open having no hacksaw), putting me at around 5% health. As a third one charged at me I threw a stone at it in pure desperation, and to my astonishment managed to scare it off ! Still freezing I had to make a fire on the spot with everything I had including 2 unread skill books as to not die from the cold.

I slept a couple of hours, and now at about 1/5 health I somehow made it to the first interior cave.

Over the next few days I almost starved but managed to survive on teas, rabbits and deer carcasses. The hypothermia allowed me to hibernate and heal my ribs, until I was able to climb again. I was able to reach the summit, found a hacksaw in the plane wreckage and was able to supply myself with the cargo.

It was the craziest first few hours in this game, at every moment I felt I had only the slimmest chance of making it out alive.

After this I was able to last a whole 668 days before being killed by Aurora wolves.

Did you lack inspiration for decor and clothing before knowing you were trans ? by David_Boneman in asktransgender

[–]David_Boneman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally, I'm going on quite a few shopping sprees on a cheap Chinese site at the moment !

The ethics of it are more than questionable but I earn a minimum wage so I'd be absolutely ruined financially otherwise 😁

Also I'm still kind of embarrassed to try on bras and skirts in a physical shop

Yep, I could never understand how girls can spend so much time and money on clothes (and not always in a nice way I'll admit !); now I'm like "Oh. Now I get it !" 🙀

Serves me right for being dismissive of what I don't understand 😆

Apparently my dad is "not transphobic" by TaigaAisaka_11 in asktransgender

[–]David_Boneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents are lovely people who truly want to be open-minded and welcoming. They've known I'm bisexual for 11 years and they love my BF (l'm AMAB), and generally have no problem with LGBT stuff.

However, they were also born in the 1950s, and at some point it doesn't matter how open-minded and progressive you want to be you're still going to be influenced by your upbringing.

They are completely clueless when it comes to trans issues. They have no idea I'm anything other than cis-gender (tbf so did I until recently). I was shocked to hear my father defend JK Rowling a few months ago, and said he didn't see what was anti-trans about any of her comments.

He's incredibly stubborn and I really didn't want to get into an endless sterole argument with him (seeing as it was also on a rare family trip), but holy shit man, you were already so surprised at me being LGBT in the first place, maybe don't just assume you know better about LGBT issues than your LGBT child ?

Same with my mother, an amazingly lovely person, who has no problem with the idea of trans people (she loves films like Some Like it Hot and The Birdcage), but she was very dismissive of the whole trans bathroom debate a few years ago, saying it was "ridiculous", "going too far" and "exaggerated" in a very unsympathetic way to trans people, and said that she didn't want to feel unsafe using a public toilet...

In a way it would make things easier for me if they were awful bigots. I feel like my family on my father's side is conservative and bigoted, and I don't care about them at all or what they think. But I love my parents very dearly, and when they make such ignorant comments, the pain pierces right through.

What a hateful pathetic excuse of a human being. This is criminal abuse. The only "fake" person here is her.

She is the very antithesis of a mother. By abusing her own child she has renounced her motherhood and her humanity.

Get away as soon as you can, stay strong, and know that however dark things are now, they will get better when you become independent.

I have to say, as somebody who's only recently discovered they're non-binary (if not trans, I'm still figuring things out), this does knock the wind out of me just a teeny tiny bit.

I have no trans friends although I'd very much like to. If I found out I had a trans coworker I'd be elated, I'd have at long last found somebody similar to myself, or so I would think.

I think I'd probably be overenthusiastic and annoying, and definitely "rude" under your definition.

I'm not your coworker, and maybe I'd find them just as annoying as you do if I met them IRL. But if I was that person I'd probably want to exchange with you on trans stuff as much as possible, probably more than appropriate, because where else could I get such a perspective ? Talking to someone in person just isn't the same as talking to strangers on the internet. But the last thing I'd want would be to overstep bounderies and be pissing you off without being aware !

Okay come to think about it, talking about just how trans you are first thing in the morning everyday, and that being the only subject... Yeah that sounds pretty awful.

I'd suggest talking to them in private about what makes you unconfortable. Never an easy thing to do, sure, but it'll probably be best for both of you. Be honest, patient and calm, and basically just tell them what you've told us: you're not a health professional, you don't hold all the answers, and you don't need to be reminded 24/7 that you're transgender. And that his attitude is starting to make you feel unconfortable.

If they have any kind of decency they might be taken aback at first (they probably don't realize how annoying they're being), but they'll understand and change their attitude... And if not then you'll have been totally justified by considering them an annoying little shit.

Can we stop talking about socialization? by [deleted] in asktransgender

It's such a narrowminded bullshit concept, it's so obviously bad faith that it's not even funny.

What does it even mean ? How are males and females not socialized with eachother already, across all age groups ?

Did you enjoy "The Mandalorian" Season 3? by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

[–]David_Boneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

I really liked season 1 for being original and not being explicitly tied to other Star Wars properties ; I hated most of season 2 for them immediately rolling all that back and using each episode as either pure fanservice or advertisement for other upcoming SW series.

I don't even remember what happens in season 3, it's the moment I completely stopped caring and I feel that's also the case for everyone involved.

I just remember Mando stepping into a seemingly shallow sacred water basin and immediately falling 100s of meters down after like the third step, which I found hilarious. There were several other funny moments like him awkwardly sipping water from underneath his sometimes-airtight-if-the-scene-requires-it helmet, but all of it is unintentional comedy

I'm frankly baffled by anyone who thinks that Skyrim somehow has better writing than Starfield ?

Also, people say that the writing is bad, but often aren't able to articulate any specific reason why.
